The United States is talking to both India and China to help them resolve their ongoing border tensions, President Donald Trump said on Saturday.

“It’s a very tough situation. We’re talking to India. We’re talking to China. They’ve got a big problem there,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House before boarding Marine 1 on his way to his first post-COVID19 election rally in Oklahoma.

“They’ve come to blows, and we’ll see what happens. We’ll try and help them out,” Mr. Trump said when asked about his assessment of the situation between India and China.

Over the past few days, the entire Trump Administration has rallied behind India against the illegitimate incursions of the Chinese Army into the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh.

As many as 20 Indian soldiers were killed in fierce clashes against Chinese intruders into Galwan Valley in Ladakh early this week. Indians, according to U.S. intelligence sources, killed more than 35 Chinese soldiers during the skirmish.

The United States has accused China of escalating border tension with India and other neighbours by trying to take benefit of these countries busy fighting coronavirus pandemic.

“The PLA (People’s Liberation Army) has escalated border tensions with India, the world’s most populous democracy. It’s militarising the South China Sea and illegally claiming more territory there, threatening vital sea lanes,” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, in a major speech on China a day earlier.

  • Chinese troops responsible for deadly clashes: India

External Affairs Ministry rejects China’s account of what led to the killing and its claim to the entire Galwan Valley

Rejecting China’s “step by step” account of what led to the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan valley on June 15, the Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday said the Chinese troops were wholly responsible for the deadly clashes and they had “attempted” to transgress into the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) many times.

“Both sides had agreed to respect and abide by the LAC and not undertake any activity to alter the status quo,” MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said in a statement on Saturday in response to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

“The Chinese side departed from these understandings in respect of the LAC in the Galwan valley area and sought to erect structures just across the LAC [on the Indian side]. When this attempt was foiled, Chinese troops took violent actions on 15 June, 2020, that directly resulted in casualties,” Mr. Srivastava added.

The MEA also rejected, for the second time this week, China’s newly articulated claims on the entire Galwan valley. In a statement, repeated by spokesperson Zhao Lijian in a series of tweets on Saturday, the Chinese MFA had said, “The Galwan valley is located on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control in the west section of the China-India boundary. For many years, the Chinese border troops have been patrolling and on duty in this region.” It claimed that India had agreed “not to cross the estuary of the Galwan river to patrol and build facilities” during the military commanders meeting on June 6.

    ‘Historically clear’

The MEA said the position on the Galwan valley was “historically clear”. “Attempts by the Chinese side to now advance exaggerated and untenable claims with regard to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) there are not acceptable. They are not in accordance with China’s own position in the past,” Mr. Srivastava said, adding that Indian troops had been patrolling the Galwan area for a “long time without any incident”.

To the Chinese version of the events unfolding over the past few weeks, which the MFA put out as a “step by step” account of the developments, the MEA said China had been “hindering” normal patrols by Indian troops since early May 2020. “This had resulted in a face-off which was addressed by the ground commanders as per the provisions of the bilateral agreements and protocols. We do not accept the contention that India was unilaterally changing the status quo. On the contrary, we were maintaining it,” it said.

The MEA’s response came hours after the government clarified Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments on the Galwan valley clashes, in which he had said, “No one has intruded into Indian territory, nor is anyone in our territory, nor have any of our border posts been captured.” The statement, which has been questioned by the Opposition, also led to comments from former diplomats, who said all communication during times of conflict must be closely monitored.

“It appears the PM misspoke as it is not possible to deny that China has transgressed, and the clarification has come too late,” former diplomat K.C. Singh told The Hindu. “In times of conflict, as it was during the Kargil war and PM Vajpayee’s statements, it is important that public positions conform to facts and inherited strategic wisdom. What the PM says is being heard not only in India but by our opponents and beyond that in the Asia-Pacific region and the world,” he added.

  • ‘Ring of fire’ will be visible in parts of north India on June 21, 2020

Most other places will witness a partial eclipse, when the moon passes between the earth and the sun

    PTI

A rare celestial event, an annular solar eclipse, which is popularly known as the “ring of fire” eclipse, will be visible on Sunday in parts of India.

The annular phase will be visible only in few places of northern India, while the rest of the country will observe this event partially, said a press release from Planetary Society, India. Across the world, the eclipse in various phases will occur between 9:16 a.m. and 3:04 p.m. “In India depending on the location of a person from the central path, the eclipse, mostly in the partial phase, will be visible between 9:56 a.m. to 2:29 p.m.,” the release said.

Across the world the eclipse will be visible in the region covering Africa except western and southern parts, southeast Europe, Asia (except north and eastern Russia) and Indonesia, among others.

Though the central path of the eclipse begins it journey in Congo (Africa), in India it traverses from Suratgarh (Rajasthan), Sirsa and Kurukshetra (Haryana), Dehradun, Chamoli and Joshimath in Uttarakhand, thus giving people in these areas the opportunity to observe the Sun as a ring of fire, when the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun.

In a total eclipse, the disc of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses, only a part of the Sun is obscured.

People in Tamil Nadu will get to witness a partial solar eclipse. This year, the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre has not made arrangements for people to view the partial solar eclipse in Chennai. Its executive director, S. Soundararajaperumal, said arrangements were not made due to the lockdown in view of COVID-19. The partial eclipse would begin at 10:22 a.m. and end at 1:41 p.m. in Chennai.

Scientists have advised people that it is unsafe to observe the sun directly as it may lead to eye injury.

One of the safe methods to watch the eclipse is through projection. Binoculars or small telescopes could be used to project a magnified image of the sun on a white piece of card.

  • Centre must respond to China’s Galwan Valley claim: Sena

    PTI

Mumbai: Shiv Sena deputy leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on Saturday said the Centre must respond to China’s claim that the sovereignty over the Galwan Valley area in Ladakh belonged to it.

Twenty Indian Army personnel, including a colonel, were killed in the clashes with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on Monday night. It was the biggest military confrontation between India and China in over five decades.

After India trashed the Chinese Army’s claim of sovereignty over the Galwan Valley and asked Beijing to confine its activities to its side of the LAC, China’s foreign ministry on Friday claimed that the Galwan Valley was on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Friday asserted that neither is anyone inside India’s territory nor has any of its posts been captured.

Taking to Twitter, Chaturvedi said, “Yesterday PM Modi assured the nation that no posts/territory have been ceded to China, but here China claims Galwan Valley as theirs.”

“This is unacceptable and the government needs to clarify or respond to this. Havewe ceded our Galwan valley or ousted the PLA from there? Nation wants to know,” the recently elected Rajya Sabha member said in the tweet.

Baramulla: At least three civilians got injured in intense shelling while several residential houses were damaged in an unprovoked ceasefire violation by Pakistan in Hajipeer , Nambla and Rustum post sectors in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police officials said.

They said that Pakistani army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing small arms, mortars and other weapons this afternoon. “A few mortar shells exploded near the residential houses injuring two civilians,” the officials said, adding the injured civilians were identified as Ahmed Shiekh (60, Parveena Begum, 40, and Maqbool Mangral (20). “The injured were immediately evacuated to nearby primary health centre for the first-aid where their condition is stated as stable,” the officials said.

Defence officials said that Indian army responded effectively to Pakistani action and a befitting response was being given. Officials said that there are reports pouring in that a few residential houses have also suffered damage. “Once the shelling would stop, teams will go to the spot to assess the damage,” they said.

The intense shelling between the two sides triggered panic in almost a dozen villages close to LoC in Uri as many residents were seen running for safety besides taking their livestock to the safer places as well.

Shakeel Ahmed, a resident of Uri told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) over phone that that people in his village woke up to intense shelling from across and when the same was responded by the army, it looked like a war like situation.

“We took our livestock to safety and asked the people of our village to stay indoors and take safety precautions. Since there are a very few underground bunkers, people assembled in one place and took refuge in them,” Ahmed said, adding that fear gripped children and women as none of them ventured out of their homes since morning while the livestock too was locked in cowsheds and other places.

This year, a record number of 1640 ceasefire violations have been recorded in J&K on LoC where in Pakistan has used small arms to mortal shells besides indiscriminate gunfire, as per security officials. “Every time Pakistan resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation, the army has given them a befitting reply by retaliating effectively,” a defence official said.

The KNO recently reported that many border residents in Kashmir are planning to move to safer places if the situation doesn’t improve in the coming days. Majority of people had complained that there was no progress on construction of community bunkers, which could also be a major reason for their migration from their native villages—(KNO)

  • LAC free of intrusion due to soldiers’ bravery, clarifies PMO

This comes in wake of statements by Congress, accusing Modi of being in denial on Chinese intrusions and reasons behind death of 20 Indian soldiers.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Saturday clarified that no part of India’s territory was under Chinese occupation, but that the statement made to the All-Party Meet (APM) was also a reference that the state of affairs was a “consequence of the bravery of our soldiers” pointing to the June 15 violent face-off between Indian and Chinese troops in East Ladakh that left 20 Indian soldiers dead.

The clarification came in the wake of statements by the Congress party, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being in denial on Chinese intrusions and the reasons behind the death of Indian soldiers.

“Attempts are being made in some quarters to give a mischievous interpretation to remarks by the Prime Minister to the APM yesterday,” said a press release from the PMO.

“Prime Minister was clear that India would respond firmly to any attempts to transgress the Line of Actual Control [LAC]. In fact he specifically emphasised that in contrast to the past neglect of such challenges, Indian forces now decisively counter any violations of LAC. The APM was also informed that the Chinese forces have come in much larger strength to the LAC and that the Indian response is commensurate. As regards transgression of LAC, it was clearly stated that the violence in Galwan on June 15th arose because Chinese side was seeking to erect structures just across the LAC and refused to desist from such action,” the statement said.

The focus of Mr. Modi’s remarks to the APM discussions were the events of June 15 that led to the loss of lives of 20 Indian soldiers. “The Prime Minister’s observations that there was no Chinese presence on our side of the LAC pertained to the situation as a consequence of the bravery of our armed forces,” it stated.

“What is Indian territory is clear from the map of India. This government is strongly and resolutely committed to that. In so far as there is some illegal occupation, the APM was briefed in detail how over the last 60 years more than 43,000 square kilometres has been yielded under cirumstances with which the country is well aware. It was also made clear that this government will not allow any unilateral change of the LAC,” said the statement, also taking aim at the Congress.

The statement did acknowledge that the overall sentiment of the APM was of unequivocal support to the government and the armed forces at a time of national crisis, and that the “unfortunate and unnecessary controversy” being created to “lower morale” will not be allowed to undermine the confidence of people.

Nearly 20 presidents of mainline Opposition parties met with the Prime Minister at the APM, and expressed support to the government and the Army and asked for the restoration of status quo ante at the borders.
