  • Excessive WhatsApping can lead to ‘WhatsAppitis

LONDON:Are you a serial texter?  You could end up with a diagnosis of “WhatsAppitis”.

British medical journal The Lancet has recorded the first official case of “WhatsAppitis”.
A pregnant woman in Granada who arrived at hospital with sore wrists after over-using the mobile phone text message service is the first patient to suffer from this condition.

Ines M Fernandez-Guerrero of General University Hospital in Granada recorded the case in the latest edition of the journal.

“A 34-year-old emergency medicine physician, 27 weeks pregnant, presented with bilateral wrist pain with sudden onset upon waking up one morning. She had no history of trauma and had not engaged in any excessive physical activity in the previous days,” she wrote.

She went on to note, “The patient responded to messages that had been sent to her on her smartphone via WhatsApp instant messaging service. She held her mobile phone, that weighed 130g, for at least 6 hours. During this time she made continuous movements with both thumbs to send messages”.

“The diagnosis for the bilateral wrist pain was WhatsAppitis. The treatment consisted of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and complete abstinence from using the phone to send messages”.

The doctor detailed the case of the 34-year-old emergency medicine physician who was pregnant and on duty on December 24.

Heavy cellphone users have earlier been found top suffer from ringxiety — a phenomenon in which users imagine their phone ringing or feel it vibrate when it actually doesn’t.

Heavy cellphone users hear this phantom ring more often than those using the phone in moderation.

India is home to over 300 million mobile phone users with six million being added to the list each month. Though no comprehensive study has been done in the country on the prevalence of ringxiety, doctors say at least 25% of all mobile phone users may be hearing false rings.

Fernandez-Guerrero wrote that a so-called Nintendinitis (a video game-related health problem classified as a form of repetitive strain injury) was first described in 1990, and since then several injuries associated with video games and technologies have been reported.

“Initially reported in children, such cases are now seen in adults. Tenosynovitis (a type of tendon injury) caused by texting with mobile phones could well be an emerging disease. Physicians need to be mindful of these new disorders,” the study said.

  • Russia To Create Own Payment System

Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country should create its own national payment settlement system to reduce its reliance on West amid heightened tensions over Crimea.
Putin told lawmakers in televised remarks on Thursday that such systems worked in countries like Japan and China.
“Initially, they started out solely as national systems limited to their own markets, their own territory, their own population, but they are becoming more popular right now,” the Russian President said, adding, “Why should we not do it? We should definitely do it and we will do it.”
Putin’s remarks came after two American financial companies Visa and MasterCard stopped providing services for payment transactions for clients at Bank Rossiya, following Washington’s sanctions imposed in response to Crimea rejoining Russia.
Crimea declared independence from Ukraine on March 17 and formally applied to become part of Russia following a referendum a day earlier, in which 96.8 percent of Crimean residents voted in favor of the secession. The voter turnout in the referendum stood at 83.1 percent.
The move sparked angry reactions from the United States and the European Union, both imposing punitive measures against a number of Russian officials and authorities in Crimea.
Ukrainian lawmakers have announced that they will never recognize the reunification of Crimea with Russia, vowing to fight for the liberation of the region as long as it takes.

  • Will follow separatists call on Poll boycott: Jamaet Al-Hadith

‘Shoora to decide about JeAH’s poll boycott campaign’
Srinagar: Over the issue of Poll boycott campaign, Kashmir’s Jamaet-e-Alhadith (JeH)Thursday passed the buck to pro-freedom camp- stating the organization will follow suits of the separatist leadership in letter and spirit.
Talking to KNS, JeAH chief Gulam Mohammad Bhat said that the calls issued by Kashmir’s pro-freedom leaders will be followed and that Jamaet has already made its position clear by maintaining that ‘Kashmir is a disputed territory’ that needs to be resolved at the earliest. “Elections cannot resolve the issue; hence it is a futile exercise. People know better what they should do.”
The JeAH chief stated that his organization has already intimated to its cadres over the issue of poll boycott. “We will follow the call of separatists’ vis-à-vis polls- as they have asked people to stay away from polls, we will follow the same.”
Bhat maintained that JeAH is a dawah organization and has an important role for the eradication of social evils from the society.
When asked about Jamaet’s plans about the door to door poll boycott campaign as done by Moulana Showkat Shah- the slain JeAH chief in 2008, Bhat stated that the issue is yet to be finalized and the same shall be discussed threadbare at the Shoora meet- expected to be held in near future. “If the Shoora decides that we must launch a massive poll boycott campaign- we will oblige the orders and it decides to stay away from the exercise, JeH will adhere to that decision.”
About Jamaet’s equations with Muthadi Majlis-e-Ulma, Bhat said that as long as the guidelines of Quran and Sunnah are followed in letter and spirit- it has no differences with any organization. “If someone overlooks the guidelines of Islam- even if that party would be closer to us- there won’t be any unity.”
Over the delay in the approval for the establishment of Trans world Muslim University, the JeAH chief remarked that the delay tactics from government’s side is being played for the establishment of Trans-world. He added that so far JeAH has several times written to the authorities over the reason of delay but no concrete reply is being given.  “We will continue to strive for the establishment of the university with the optimistic approach.” (KNS)
