  • Encounter breaks out along LoC in Kupwara

Srinagar, April 1: A gunfight broke out between militants and army in woods along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday.

Reports reaching GNS said that the soldiers manning the fence near “Teen Behak” in the Jumgund area of the LoC at around 1:00 p.m. intercepted the movement of a group of militants believed to be 5 to 6 in number.

The militants while trying to infiltrate in this side were challenged by the army, triggering off a brief exchange of gunfire, they said.

Meanwhile, additional reinforcement of the forces was rushed to the spot. They said due to inclement weather the operation may get prolonged even as all the exit points have been sealed. Army sources also confirmed the operation in the area. “When reports last came in, the operation was going on,” they said. (GNS)

  • Afghanistan: Taliban team in Kabul for prisoner exchange process

Exchange likely to kick-start talks between the group and Afghan government negotiators as envisaged in US-Taliban deal.

    Aljazeera

A three-member Taliban team has arrived in Kabul to begin a prisoner exchange process, which is likely to kick-start talks between the group and negotiators named by the Afghan government to end the country’s 18-year war.

The peace talks, known as the intra-Afghan dialogue, were envisaged in an agreement signed between the United States and the Taliban in Doha, which also stipulated an exchange of 6,000 prisoners held by the Afghan government and the group.

“Our three-member technical team will help the process of prisoners’ release by identification of the prisoners, (and) their transportation,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters News Agency on Tuesday.

The prisoner release had been a sticking point in the starting of peace talks, with the Taliban and Afghan government differing over the process and timing of the exchange.

Afghanistan: Concern about COVID-19 as refugees return home (1:55)
However, after weeks of back and forth, the process is set to begin with the arrival of the Taliban team, which will set up camp at a luxury hotel in Kabul.

“In this regard, they will do a kind of deal with the opposite side (Afghan government),” Mujahid said. “Their practical work would start in coming days.”

The Taliban had previously refused to speak to the US-backed Afghan government directly.

The Taliban team had planned to send a larger, 10-member delegation, Mujahid said, but the size was reduced due to the coronavirus fallout in Afghanistan.

The talks also received a boost after a government-named negotiating team was endorsed by Abdullah Abdullah, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s main political rival.

“The formation of an inclusive negotiation team is an important step towards facilitating intra-Afghan negotiations,” Abdullah Abdullah said on Twitter.

    ‘Good news’

Differences between Ghani and Abdullah over the result of the 2019 presidential elections threatened to derail the peace process with the Taliban – a fear voiced by major capitals around the world, particularly Washington.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also termed Tuesday’s developments “good news”, saying the team of negotiators announced by the government appeared inclusive.

Pompeo last week flew to Kabul and the Qatari capital Doha, where the Taliban have an office, to urge all sides to move forward with the process, which at that point was deadlocked.

“We’ve seen a [negotiating] team identified. Looks like it’s pretty inclusive, pretty broad. We’re happy about that,” Pompeo said at a news conference in Washington on Tuesday.

“We’ve begun to see some work done on prisoner releases, as well, all elements that have to come together so we can get to the inter Afghan negotiations, which ultimately will prove to be the only mechanism that has any hope of delivering peace and reconciliation to the people,” he added.

  • Two Indias — one at home doing yoga, other fighting for survival: Sibal

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Wednesday took a dig at the government, saying there were two Indias with one at home doing yoga, watching Ramayan and playing antakshari, and the other trying to reach home and fighting for survival.

Mr. Sibal’s attack was in reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi sharing a video of a yoga asan which he practices, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar announcing the rerun of Ramayan and Mahabharat recently and Union minister Smriti Irani playing ‘Twitter Antakshari’ during the ‘Janata Curfew

  • JKPC Reaction on J&K Domicile Gazette Notification by Chief Spokesperson, Junaid Azim Mattu

“The presidential order defining the domicile law issued at the depth of night while the world is under the grip of a deadly pandemic falls way short of expectations even for those who expected some relief some reconciliation process. The new definition of ‘domicile’ is humiliating and insulting. Adds insult to injury. Doing away with district and divisional recruitment is an affront to the concept of affirmative action. We had no expectations but this particular order has made the disappointment even more intense. The government of the day has embarked on an erroneous path and seems to be in no mood to rectify wrongs and instead is content to be deluded in the world of “we know the best” for J&K and its people.

The lowest rung in jobs has been reserved for locals – not even non-gazetted but Class IV jobs. There seems to be a clear intent of conveying yet another serving of humiliation and insult to the people of J&K after what transpired in August 5th. What is ironically historical though is that in the middle of one of the worst medical disasters facing the world, the Govt of the day has the time and patience to script a disaster of its own. During the #COVID19 battle, the people of J&K didn’t deserve more humiliation.”

  • COVID-19: Bangladesh extends shutdown until April 11

2 new coronavirus cases take country’s tally past 50, premier says essential operations will continue

    Agencies

DHAKA: Bangladesh on Tuesday extended a nationwide shutdown until April 11 to stem the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the shutdown, announced on March 26 and due to end on April 4, was being extended for five more days, the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency reported.

The shutdown, which the government continues to refer to as a “general holiday”, will officially end on Friday, April 9, but the next two days are the regular weekend.

The decision came as two more COVID-19 cases took Bangladesh’s tally to 51 on Tuesday. The country of around 165 million people has so far reported five deaths due to the coronavirus.

“We earlier announced a 10-day general holiday from March 26 and it is now extended for five days until April 9,” Hasina said in a video conference with civil administration officials of the country’s 64 districts.

She said the full shutdown will be eased on “a limited scale” to cater to the country’s essential needs.

“Everything cannot be stopped. The essential things will remain in operation, but all educational institutions will remain closed,” said the premier, adding that the situation will be reviewed on April 4.

She said industries must remain operational but with all precautionary measures. “We have to keep industries open for production of many essential goods. We must also ensure that nobody is allowed to hike up prices of daily commodities. We must behave humanely during this time of crisis,” Hasina stressed.

The premier also warned of an impending global financial crisis due to the disruption of economic activity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“To overcome that crisis, we have to pay attention to our agriculture sector. We have enough fertile land and sufficient manpower, but we must ensure that no piece of land anywhere in the country is left uncultivated,” she said.

She directed the Ministry of Agriculture to facilitate farmers and to provide them all necessary materials to ensure optimum output.

  • Investors tell Indian startups to ‘prepare for the worst’ as Covid-19 uncertainty continues

Just three months after capping what was the best year for Indian startups, having raised a record $14.5 billion in 2019, they are beginning to struggle to raise new capital as prominent investors urge them to “prepare for the worst”, cut spending and warn that it could be challenging to secure additional money for the next few months.

    Manish Singh | TechCrunch

In an open letter to startup founders in India, ten global and local private equity and venture capitalist firms including Accel, Lightspeed, Sequoia Capital, and Matrix Partners cautioned that the current changes to the macro environment could make it difficult for a startup to close their next fundraising deal.

The firms, which included Kalaari Capital, SAIF Partners, and Nexus Venture Partners — some of the prominent names in India to back early-stage startups — asked founders to be prepared to not see their startups’ jump in the coming rounds and have a 12-18 month runway with what they raise.

“Assumptions from bull market financings or even from a few weeks ago do not apply. Many investors will move away from thinking about ‘growth at all costs’ to ‘reasonable growth with a path to profitability.’ Adjust your business plan and messaging accordingly,” they added.

Signs are beginning to emerge that investors are losing appetite to invest in the current scenario.

Indian startups participated in 79 deals to raise $496 million in March, down from $2.86 billion that they raised across 104 deals in February and $1.24 billion they raised from 93 deals in January this year, research firm Tracxn told TechCrunch. In March last year, Indian startups had raised $2.1 billion across 153 deals, the firm said.

New Delhi ordered a complete nation-wide lockdown for its 1.3 billion people for three weeks earlier this month in a bid to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

The lockdown, as you can imagine, has severely disrupted businesses of many startups, several founders told TechCrunch.

Vivekananda Hallekere, co-founder and chief executive of mobility firm Bounce, said he is prepared for a 90-day slowdown in the business.

Founder of a Bangalore-based startup, which was in advanced stages to raise more than $100 million, said investors have called off the deal for now. He requested anonymity.

Food delivery firm Zomato, which raised $150 million in January, said it would secure an additional $450 million by the end of the month. Two months later, that money is yet to arrive.

Many startups are already beginning to cut salaries of their employees and let go of some people to survive an environment that aforementioned VC firms have described as “uncharted territory.”

Travel and hotel booking service Ixigo said it had cut the pay of its top management team by 60% and rest of the employees by up to 30%. MakeMyTrip, the giant in this category, also cut salaries of its top management team.

Beauty products and cosmetics retailer Nykaa on Tuesday suspended operations and informed its partners that it would not be able to pay their dues on time.

Investors cautioned startup founders to not take a “wait and watch” approach and assume that there will be a delay in their “receivables,” customers would likely ask for price cuts for services, and contracts would not close at the last minute.

“Through the lockdown most businesses could see revenues going down to almost zero and even post that the recovery curve may be a ‘U’ shaped one vs a ‘V’ shaped one,” they said.
