  • SHO Nigeen injured during clashes: Police

    Srinagar, Apr 06: Station House Officer (SHO) Nigeen, Manzoor Ahmad Friday sustained injuries during the clashes between youth and forces.
    The injured cop is being treated in hospital, police said.
    “Our colleague SHO Nageen Insp Manzoor got injured today morning in a stone pelting incident. He is being treated in hospital. We pray for his speedy recovery,” Kashmir zone police tweeted.

  • Throat-slit body of abducted youth recovered from Hajin: Police

    Srinagar, April 06: Police today morning recovered body of a throat-slit youth who was abducted by gunmen on Wednesday night.

    SSP Bandipora Zulfikar told News agency GNS that they have recovered the body with throat slit at BonMohalla Hajin.

    He identified the deceased as Manzoor Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Gaffer Bhat.

    Manzoor was abducted by a group of militants affiliated with LeT on Wednesday before injuring his father.(GNS)

  • Restrictions imposed in Srinagar to prevent protests

    Srinagar: Authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar city and some other places in the Kashmir Valley on Friday to prevent resistance leaders-called protests.
    The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprised of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, has called for peaceful protests after Friday’s congregational prayers.
    Geelani and Mirwaiz continue to remain under house arrest while Malik has been lodged at the Srinagar Central Jail.
    The restrictions have been imposed in Srinagar’s old city areas while extra deployment of forces has been made, the police said.
    After widespread protests by students on Thursday, authorities ordered closure of all schools, colleges and universities in the Valley on Friday.
    Exams scheduled for the day have been postponed by Kashmir University.
    Train services between the valley’s Baramulla town and Jammu region’s Banihal town have been suspended.

  • 28 shutdowns in 70 days

    Srinagar: On Thursday it was 28th time since January when Shopian district observed shutdown against the killings of militants and the civilians.

    The first shutdown was observed on January 25 when two militants and a civilian were killed in Chaigund and the ongoing strike is being held to mourn the killings of 12 militants and 5 civilians during twin gunfights between the militants and government forces.

    The streets look deserted but no sooner do military vehicles appear on the road, youth come out of their houses and pelt stones. The district simmers with anger. A beeline of mourners visits the residences of slain militants and civilians to pay condolences and express solidarity with the families.
    This has affected the horticulture activity at a time when fruit season is about to start.
    “We are finding it difficult to spray our orchards. But when our children are dying everyday, how can we just forget it and move on,” said Abdul Qayoom, a local resident.
    Six major army camps have come up in the district in the last two years turning it into a military garrison.
    Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) has called for Shopian Chalo thrice and on all these occasions the authorities foiled the march by enforcing strict curbs and imposed section 144 across southern districts.

  • Talks With Pakistan Only Way Forward: Farooq Abdullah

    “If the situation continues to remain as it is, people in every part of Kashmir will come forward to sacrifice their lives.”

    Srinagar: Former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said that holding parleys with Pakistan was the only way to tackle the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
    “The only way to come out of the present storm (in J&K) is to talk to Pakistan,” the National Conference leader told the media here.
    Abdullah said the situation in Kashmir is so grim that the youth are extremely angry.
    “If the situation continues to remain as it is, people in every part of Kashmir will come forward to sacrifice their lives,” he warned.
    He said the state has a constitutionally guaranteed autonomy that needs to be restored so that the people feel that their honour has been restored. “Playing tricks will not help,” he remarked.
    When asked to respond on Afridi’s ‘anti-India remark’, Abdullah told media, “Everybody has condemned the killings in Kashmir. Every nation is condemning the killing, the killing must stop.”
    Yesterday, Afridi took to his official Twitter account and tweeted on the situation in the Valley and asked the United Nations and other international bodies to make efforts to put an end to the violence in the state.
    “Appalling and worrisome situation ongoing in the Indian (administration) Kashmir.Innocents being shot down by oppressive regime to clamp voice of self-determination & independence. Wonder where is the @UN & other international bodies & why aren’t they making efforts to stop this bloodshed?” Afridi had tweeted.
    At least 13 militants and three soldiers were among 20 people killed in three separate gunfights in the Kashmir Valley on Sunday.
    Three separate encounters took place in the valley – one in Anantnag during the night and two on Sunday morning in Dragad and Kachdoora villages. As many as 25 others were injured in the encounters.

    Srinagar, Apr 02 : In view of the prevailing law and order situation, government has ordered closure of all the Schools and Colleges in Kashmir valley on Tuesday.
    According to the officials in education department, the Minister for Education Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari has ordered the closure of all the Schools and Colleges in Kashmir valley on Tuesday 3rd April 2018.
    The schools and colleges across the Valley were closed today following the shutdown call given by the Joint resistance leadership (JRL) in view of the Shopian and Anantnag killings. (KNS)

  • Restrictions in Srinagar areas tomorrow: Admin

    Srinagar, Apr 01: Srinagar administration has decided to impose restrictions under Section 144 CrPC in 7 police station areas tomorrow, the 2nd of April 2018.
    The areas where restrictions will be imposed include Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal, M R Gunj, and partial in Maisuma, Kralkhud.
    An official in the administration told KNS that the restrictions will be imposed as a precautionary measure.
    Meanwhile, Joint Resistance Leadership on Sunday called for strike in Kashmir Valley today and tomorrow in view of militant killings in south Kashmir gunfights. (KNS)

  • Youth killed, dozens others injured in Shopian parts

    Srinagar: A youth was killed and dozen others were injured in government forces action near encounter sites at Dragad and Kachdora areas of southern Shopian district.
    Official sources told news agency GNS that a youth Zubair Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Ahad Bhat, a resident of Gopalpora DH Pora in neighbouring Kulgam district suffered injuries near the encounter site at Kachdora.
    Zubair was shifted to primary health centre Vehil were he succumbed.
    Reports said that intense clashes were received in most parts of south Kashmir including Shopian and Anantnag.
    In these clashes over a dozen youth received injuries after police and paramilitary forces used tear smoke shells and fired pellet guns on them.
    Among the dozen injured, one youth namely Niyaz Ahmad son of Abdul Rehman received serious bullet wounds in forces action.
    A police officer told GNS that some youth suffered injuries in law and order problem that erupted following the operations in the area.
    The official denied killing of any civilian and said one youth Niyaz received bullet wounds in his legs and arms.
    Niyaz was shifted to Bone and Joint hospital Barzullah Srinagar where his condition is said to be stable, the official said.
    Meanwhile, reports of clashes and spontaneous shutdown were received from other parts of the Valley including old City Srinagar and Palhallan. (GNS)
  • Top commanders among 11 killed in twin Shopian operations

    Srinagar, April 1: Top commanders among eleven militants were killed and four army men sustained injuries in two separate encounters in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Sunday.

    Official sources told news agency GNS that a total of eleven militants have been killed in the twin operations at Dragad and Kachdoora. They said seven militants were killed at Dragad and four killed in Kachdora.

    While Dragad encounter has ended, the operation was going on at Kachdoora.

    Four army soldiers have also received injuries in the operation and were shifted to military hospital for treatment.

    Among the injured, two soldiers were identified as NK Shrikant and Sepoy Hariom.

    More than a dozen persons were injured in clashes that ensued at both the places following the encounters.

    Some of the injured have been referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment.

    The gunfight at both the places broke out late last night after a joint team of army’s 44 RR, 3 RR, 34 RR, SOG and CRPF have cordoned off both the places.

    Earlier, a militant Rouf Bashir Khanday was killed and his associate Imran Rashid was arrested alive during an overnight gunfight at Brunty Dialgam in Anantnag district. (GNS)
