  • Umar Akmal booked for violating wedding act

KARACHI: Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal’s run-in with the authorities does not appear to be ending as he has now been booked in a case where he is accused of violating a wedding ceremony act of the Punjab government.

To make matters worse, Umar and his family members have also been accused of misbehaving with the media which had gone to cover his Rasm Hina ceremony at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Lahore on Tuesday night.

According to Rao Ifthikar, a senior police official, Umar and his family violated the wedding act under which ceremonies can not continue after 10.00pm. It was also alleged that Umar misbehaved with the local authorities and the media during the ceremony.

“The ceremony was continuing even after the given strict deadline and he also violated the food act by offering a variety of dishes to guests whereas under the law only single dish is allowed at marriage ceremonies,” he said.

The case against the cricketer has been registered at the Heer police station.

Television footage showed the police and authorities questioning Umar’s brothers, Kamran and Adnan and other relatives but apparently Umar left with his bride as the arguments were going on.

Sources said that police had also gone to his residence to arrest the cricketer but anticipating this, Umar and his bride shifted to an unknown location after midnight.

“It is a serious offence as his family members also misbehaved when the raid was carried out. The police arrested four persons belonging to the caterers and the owner of the farmhouse but Umar avoided arrest,” another police official said.

This is not the first time that Umar had been caught in a controversy or been booked by the police.

In February he clashed with a traffic warden in the Gulberg area after violating a traffic signal and this led to the registration of a case against him for also tearing the uniform of the warden and misbehaving with him.

After spending a day at the Gulberg police station, Umar was released on bail but a challan sent against him to a magistrate’s court.

Umar managed to represent Pakistan in the Asia Cup and World T20 in Bangladesh after he apologised to the traffic warden, Zeeshan, who then withdraw the case against him in court.

But a source said, this time Umar appeared to be in more trouble as the raid was carried out on the instructions of the Chief Minister, Shahbaz Sharif after television channels showed live coverage of the Rasm Hina ceremony from the farmhouse.

  • Won’t allow PDP and BJP to toy with our future: Dr. Farooq Abdullah

Sharif-ud-din Shariq files nomination papers as NC-Congress Coalition Candidate

Srinagar: National Conference Party President Dr. Farooq Abdullah has said that National Conference won’t allow PDP and BJP to toy with the future of our State and will foil their attempts to dilute the special status of this State for their ruthless, personal political ambitions.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah was speaking at an impressive joint NC-Congress public meeting in Baramulla after the NC-Congress Coalition Candidate Sharif-ud-din Shariq filed his nomination papers from the Baramulla-Kupwara Parliament Seat. Sharif-ud-din Shariq was accompanied to the DC Office by Senior Leaders including Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Professor Saif-ud-din Soz, Taj Mohuiddin, Ghulam Hassan Mir, Nazir Ahmed Gurezi, Nasir Aslam Wani, Mohammad Shafi Uri, Mohammad Akbar Lone, Mir Saifullah, Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan, Javed Ahmed Dar and Qaiser Jamshed Lone.

Speaking to the public after the filing of the nomination papers, Dr. Farooq Abdullah said that Jammu & Kashmir – its land, its identity and its future belongs to the people of J&K and National Conference will continue to advocate the empowerment of our people in New Delhi with the same sincerity and resolve as our MPs have demonstrated in the Parliament. Dr. Farooq Abdullah said that BJP holds J&K’s special status against the people of this State and is hell bent on harming our unique constitutional status based on the irrevocable Article 370 of the Constitution of India. What is unfortunate yet predictable is that PDP has jumped into Modi’s lap to help him in this plan by tactically campaigning for and supporting BJP candidates in Jammu and Udhampur Parliament Seats.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah said that National Conference has always endeavored to fulfill its promises to the people of J&K. It was NC that fulfilled its promise of passing the Autonomy Resolution in the State Assembly and it was none other than BJP that rejected the Autonomy Resolution during the NDA rule. It was around the same time BJP facilitated the launch of PDP in J&K to dilute and fragment the voice of the people of J&K. PDP obliged BJP then and is obliging BJP now in BJP’s perennial intention to dilute the State’s special status.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Farooq Abdullah said that it was the National Conference Government of 1996 that started a corrective era of reconstruction and reconciliation in J&K after the Mufti-Jagmohan duo had wreaked havoc with the State through their policy of barbaric oppression, wanton massacres and anti-people conspiracies. It was National Conference that rebuilt the State’s public infrastructure, provided employment to lakhs of youth and ensured the return of an effective work culture in the State.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah said that it was the Omar Abdullah-led NC-Congress Coalition that worked for reconciliation in the State by having a policy of involvement, engagement and amnesty despite serious hurdles and realities in the State. The NC-Congress Coalition has ensured the unprecedented equitable development of all three regions of the State of Jammu and Kashmir without any prejudice of religion, caste, region or creed.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah said that PDP believed in manipulating democratic avenues to create political space for itself even if that meant working against the interests and aspirations of the people they allegedly claim to represent. Dr. Farooq Abdullah asked the people to understand that the forthcoming elections is a direct contest between secular forces and communal divisive forces and they should vote in large number for the NC-Congress Coalition Candidates to protect the secular ethos of not only the State but also the entire country.

The NC and Congress leaders were given a rousing reception after reaching the venue of the public meeting and slogans were raised in favor of the NC-Congress Coalition.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah also addressed an impressive workers’ meeting in Zadibal Constituency and asked the workers to work with utmost dedication and passion to ensure that the BJP-PDP nexus isn’t allowed to make any inroads into the State and the NC-Congress Coalition Candidates return to the Parliament with huge margins.

The meetings were also addressed by senior party leaders Ali Mohammad Sagar, Nasir Aslam Wani, Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan, Peer Afaq Ahmed, Youth leader Salman Ali Sagar and Abdul Gani Khan while various senior leaders of National Conference were present on the occasion. • Pathribal case: Army objects to certified copies of court martial verdict

Srinagar: The army on Wednesday objected to issuance of certified copies to state police saying that the IGP Kashmir is not a party in the Pathribal ‘Fake’ encounter case so he cannot obtain a copy of the related documents.

In its objections, the army also pleaded that the application of the IGP Kashmir seeking duplicate copies of the military court verdict against five accused in the matter be dismissed as the same is beyond his jurisdiction. Pertinently, the IGP Kashmir had filed an application seeking certified copies of the military court verdict in the matter so that the state government could have agitated the matter at an appropriate forum.

Eight years after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) charged five Army men, including four officers and a Junior Commissioned Officer, with murder of five civilians in Pathribal area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, in January this year Army closed the case “because the evidence recorded couldn’t establish a prime-facie case against any of the accused.”

The Army had taken up the case from the Civil Court in 2012 following the Supreme Court directions while it has earlier challenged the charge-sheet filed by the CBI, which described the killings as a cold-blooded murder. Brigadier Ajay Saxena, Lt Col Brajendra Pratap Singh, Major Sourabh Sharma, Major Amit Saxena and Subedar Idrees Khan were charge-sheeted by the CBI in 2006 for killing five civilians and later dubbing them as foreign militants.

Five civilians were killed and branded as militants, days after 35 Sikhs were killed in Chattisingpora village, nearer to Pathribal. The CBI had filed the charge-sheet against the accused army officers in 2006 but the Army contested its maintainability on the grounds that prior sanction from the Government of India was required under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which provides immunity against prosecution to Army personnel deployed in ‘disturbed’ areas. (KNS)

Srinagar: The Hurriyat Conference’s (M) Wednesday organized a seminar titled “Military Concentration, Sham Elections, Tosa Maidan lease reflection of New Delhi’s imperialist designs” at Hurriyat Headquarters Rajbagh Srinagar.

He said Kashmir’s civilization, culture, trade and economics would continue to remain insecure until the process of troop withdrawal from the region does not take place. Mirwaiz said that since 1947 military build-up in Kashmir is going on under a planned strategy and currently there is no village, town city, or tourist resort where army is not present. The control and authority the people of Kashmir enjoyed in 1947 over the resources of Kashmir has now been snatched from them and the resources are no more in our hands now.

The Hurriyat (M) Chairman made it clear that all issues related to Kashmir are laced with politics. He said those elements who are trying to disassociate Tosa Maidan from Kashmir politics should look at the history and get acquainted with the truth that Indian forces have occupied the land of Kashmir, adding, demilitarization is one of the most important objectives of the peaceful struggle of APHC. He said Allah has blessed Kashmir with unique green environs and natural beauty and Hurriyat believes in protecting it by adopting a proper political strategy.

Out rightly rejecting the so called elections in Kashmir, Mirwaiz said India has deployed lakhs of troops in length and breadth of Kashmir to suppress the emotions and political aspirations of Kashmiris. He said the activities of genuine leadership of Kashmir have been restricted, adding, such an atmosphere renders election process meaningless.

Speaking on the occasion, senior Hurriyat leader, Prof Abdul Gani Bhat said that in the presence of nuclear arms it was imperative to find the solution of issue to prevent a possible future destruction. He said that Tosa Maidan was the symbol of Kashmir’s collective culture and civilization. He said along with freedom struggle, Hurriyat was committed to work towards protecting the environs of Kashmir.

Blaming pro-Indian politicians in Kashmir for contributing in military occupation of Kashmir, senior Hurriyat leader Javaid Ahmad Mir said polls are nothing, but a continuation of a process since 1947 to strengthen its occupation of Kashmir through local collaborators. He said without Kashmir solution, sufferings of Kashmiris won’t end. He further said that in the current political struggle all sections of the population have given sacrifices and a handful of persons nourishing on government salaries could not be allowed to pursue their personal agenda on the blood nourished movement.

Terming the protection of environment as basic responsibility of political leadership, Mohammad Yousuf Chahcri said it was important to protect the environs or otherwise Kashmir would turn into a desert.
