  • Girl attempts suicide in North Kashmir

    Srinagar: In an attempt to end her life, a girl (name with held) resident of Damping Boniyar consumed some poisonous substance at her home, a police statement said. “The lady was immediately rushed to PHC Boniyar for treatment,” it said. While Police have registered a case in this regard.
  • Breast, Stomach Cancer on rise in valley

    Srinagar: The Mariam Wellness Centre Hyderpora, centre in collaboration with Cancer Society Of Kashmir and Regional Cancer Centre SKIMS have held one day awareness cum screening camp for Breast cancer at Batpora, Inderhama at Shehjar complex.
    According to a statement issued to KNS, females aged between 35 to 55 underwent screening,3 showed possible signs of breast cancer malignancy, while 20 patients showed possible signs of gastro intestinal tract malignancy.
    Females from Batpora, Burzhama, Gouse, Chattarhama and adjoining remote villages benefitted from screening by three doctors and cancer specialist nurse which was completed under guidance of Dr. Shaqul Qamar, assistant professor at SKIMS.
    In total 101 patients came, out of which 85 were evaluated for possible signs of malignancy, while 15 male patients were treated for general medical conditions by Dr.Arif Maghribi,20 students of a local school were given counseling sessions by Mental Health Therapist Tazeen Matto. Farid Azad was in charge of media cell and documentation. (KNS)

  • Kashmir Medico’s killing in Libya triggers anger, resentment

    Srinagar: The recent killing of a Kashmiri medico at Libya has triggered widespread anger and resentment across valley with the Pro-Freedom camp Sunday stating that the people of Kashmir are ‘unsafe’ across the world.
    According to the reports received by KNS, the Chahrum of Dr Irfan Ali- a doctor killed in Libya in the recent past- was observed here with the people offering congregational prayers for the departed soul at his ancestral house.
    The reports informed further that the senior Huriyat leader Aga Syed Hassan while addressing the people who visited Dr Irfan’s house on Sunday, stated that the killing was the most brutal act and that the same must be probed thoroughly. He stated further that the people of Kashmir are unsafe in every part of the globe at present. “It is GOI that has deputed Dr Irfan in Libya. His killing must be investigated so that culprits could be brought to book.” Aga stated further that if such incidents are repeated in future the day is not far that valley’s talented lot would be scared in moving out of their homes.  (KNS)

  • PDP believes in politics of deceit, deception: Sagar

    Srinagar: Maintaining the PDP has always believed in propagating the politics of deceit and deception, the Minister for Rural Development, Panchayats and Senior leader of National Conference, Ali Mohammad Sagar has said that in order to suit their political agenda the leaders of the party have always hatched conspiracies against the people of the state for their political gains and personal agendas.
    According to a statement issued to KNS, Sagar was addressing a huge gathering at Nowhatta in the old city, Srinagar as part of the people to people contact. It was attended by eminent persons of the area besides leaders of the party. Sagar said that it is recorded history that the National Conference has rendered in numerable sacrifices for the cause of the state and have never cared for the power, whereas the leaders of the PDP have always been involved in the mechanisations to stall the interests of the sate for their petty political interests and also murder democracy and democratic intuitions as was evident by their dubious role in ensuring the toppling of democratically elected governments in1977, 1984 and 1990.He said that the party has been responsible for enactment of certain draconian laws which have inflicted miseries on the people of the state and now in a state  of fear and hypocrisy they are trying to mislead the people by spreading lies as well as false propaganda but the people of the state are wise enough to understand their designs and will give a befitting reply to them in near future.
    Appealing the people to vote en-mass for Dr. Farooq Abdulah, Sagar said that there is no comparison between Dr. Farooq who is the most popular leader of the people and a political novice being fielded by the PDP.“It is not for the first time that this party is targeting National conference by launching vicious propaganda against it, they are in a habit of doing so since long and have always been defeated in their nefarious designs”, sagar said.
    Sagar  said that Omar led government has  ushered an era of peace and development in the state, which have no parallels in the annals of the history and this has   induced a sense of fear in the minds of PDP, which is now resorting to political gimmickry to further their ulterior political motives. He said that the government has worked tirelessly for the restoration of the peace in the e state and now the people are reaping the dividends.
    Referring to the statements of the PDP and its several leaders regarding resolution of K issue, Sagar said that they are used to propagate lies and float obnoxious ideas whereas National Conference has always advocated for the peaceful resolution of the K-issue and have rendered numerous sacrifices for the same and people are well aware of this fact. (KNS)

  • Pakistan beat Australia in World Twenty20

    Pakistan beat Australia by 16 runs in the World Twenty20 Super-10 Group Two match in Dhaka on Sunday.
    Australia made a brave attempt to surpass Pakistan’s commanding 191-5 before being bowled out for 175 off the last ball of the innings at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.
    It was Australia’s first match in the tournament, while Pakistan had lost to India on Friday.
    The West Indies and hosts Bangladesh are the two other teams in the group, from which the top two will advance to the semi-finals.

  • Geelani slaps Rs 50 crore defamation suit on Indian newspaper

    Srinagar: Chairman All Parties Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Geelani has sued Delhi-based newspaper for publishing ‘a frivolous and fictitious story’ about him and has sought a compensation of rupees 50 crore.
    The legal notice slapped on ‘The Times of India’ states that Geelani reserves right to take all the legal recourses — for defaming and disrupting him– against this newspaper and its officials who have deliberately attempted to defame him.
    Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar said: ‘The Times of India’ in its March 14, 20014, edition has published a mischievous and baseless report about the senior pro-freedom leader, in which an attempt has been made to cause harm to his esteem, dignity and reputation.
    Hurriyat had earlier announced that the amalgam would take legal action against the newspaper and its officials. The legal notice has been slapped on The Times of India, it’s general editor, editor and its reporter in Jammu and Kashmir, Saleem Pandith, through a prominent lawyer M S Reshi.
    The defamation suit also demands a compensation of Rupees 50 crore for causing defamation.
    In the legal notice, Reshi has said that his client is the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference and at the same time chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat as well and he is a well known personality in the Asian sub-continent.
    “He is a towering and respectable leader of Jammu and Kashmir and he is the leader of masses representing the sentiments of majority of people of Jammu and Kashmir,” his counsel noted.
    The legal notice has challenged the ‘mischievous reporting’ of the newspaper that when Geelani was leaving to New Delhi for the treatment, “He was driven to the tarmac and taken towards the aircraft on a wheel chair but the 83 year old climbed up the stairs of the plane without support”.
    Reshi also termed the report that “Geelani has nominated his son as his successor, which has disappointed the hardcore section of the party” as baseless.
    Reshi in the notice states that the report was baseless and was a deliberate attempt to defame Geelani and his family. “We will take every possible step to bring them in the court of law for what they have done to harm the image of Geelani,” the spokesman said.

    Pattan: A convention of Jammu and Kashmir Youth National Conference was held at Pattan which was presided over by Abdul Rashid Shaheen Vice President North Kashmir  and Advocate Zaffar Shaheen who was appointed as Organizer J&K Youth National Conference and the  Member of Media Cell J&K NC.
    The youth of Pattan welcomed him and Thanked the leadership for It while addressing the Gathering General Secretary J&K National Conference Student’s Union  Rasik Bhat  emphasized on Youth and Student’s to be the agents of change and work for the Party and Society. While addressing the youth Advocate Zaffar Shaheen asked the youth to take Benefits of State and Central schemes and earn their livelihood. He also told them to strengthen the party and work for the poor section of people. He added.
  • Pakistan’s integrity important for Muslims of sub continent: Khan

    Srinagar: Jammu Kashmir National Front organized a meeting on the eve of Pakistan Day, at its headquarter which was attended by all the office bearers. Party chief and senior resistance leader Nayeem Ahmad Khan, on the occasion said that integrity and strength of Pakistan is as important for the Muslims of the subcontinent as water for the fish.
    According to a statement issued to KNS, deliberating on the history of the making of Pakistan, Khan said that it gave voice to the Muslims and suppressed of the subcontinent. “The establishment of Pakistan provided voice to the Muslims that is why the conspiracies against it started from the day it was formed,” Khan said.
    Khan appealed the people of Pakistan to keep their eyes open so that they can recognize their foes and friends. Khan appraised the efforts of Pakistan for the resolution of Kashmir dispute and said that Islamabad despite its own problems and limitations is doing everything possible for the Kashmiri people. Khan hoped that Pakistan will continue to help Kashmiri people on the diplomatic and political fronts so that Kashmir dispute is resolved according to the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
    Khan while deliberating on the present situation expressed anger and anguish over the role of police recently in Naidkhai and Hajin. Terming the police role as the worst example of hooliganism, Khan said that the men in uniform should know that by using Pallets and Pepper against the oppressed people they cannot change the reality about the Kashmir dispute.
    “Kashmir’s new generation has understood the reality of the Kashmir issue so they express their anger but the occupied forces and the police is hell bent to crush the youth by using force against them, but they must know such tactics have ruined the imperialistic forces throughout history,” Khan said. Khan expressed sympathy with those who suffered at the hands of police at Hajin and Naidkhai recently.

    Figures mock at employment promises of Govt
    42000 graduates, 11000 PGs registered with Govt, jobless  
    Srinagar: The problem of unemployment seems to be an unending crises in valley, with the figures revealing more than 6980 post graduates and 29034 graduates registered with government employment exchanges in Kashmir valley are jobless.
    Pertinently, the ruling National Conference and Congress in their respective election manifestos of 2008 had pledged to eradicate the problem of unemployment from the state with the creation of new job avenues for the educated youth.
    NC in its page eight of election manifesto had promised to tackle the unemployment problem ‘expeditiously’. It had termed the same ‘alarming’. “It is shameful that scholars with PhD degrees, M.A, Medicine and Engineering should be getting wasted away. We will explore avenues for their adjustment,” reads NC’s manifesto of 2008.
    According to the figures revealed by government’s various district employment and counseling centres, valley has 6980 Post Graduates unemployed while as in Jammu the number of registered unemployed Post Graduates is 4094.
    The reports inform KNS further that  there are 1622 students searching for jobs who posses PG degrees in various science streams including biotechnology, botany, physics etc. The figure reveals further that valley has 3567 arts post graduates unemployed. The unemployed lot poses degrees in English, Urdu, Political Science etc.
    The figures reveal that in valley there are more than 29034 graduates who are unemployed and in Jammu province the number of jobless graduates is 12426. The details inform that Kashmir division has 46703 people jobless who have passed 10+2 in various streams while as in Jammu the number is 27212.
    With Jammu and Kashmir reeling under the unemployment crises,  out the total number of two lack forty four thousand  jobless educated youth in the state, Kashmir division appears to be worst affected having more than one lakh fifty five thousand of its educated youth educated youth unemployed.
    Also there are more than four thousand five hundred registered degree holders of engineering jobless in the state and that the number of unemployed diploma holders is more than eight thousand five hundred.
    The reports remarked that there are five thousand five hundred unemployed ITI trained youth jobless in the state.
    The details reveal that Jammu and Kashmir has the highest unemployment rate of 4.9% while as in Punjab it is 2.8%, in Himachal Pradesh it is 2.0%, in Delhi it is 4.7 % while as in Haryana it is 3.2% The reports also reveal that in JK, the unemployment rate of females is highest in India. In JK it is 20.20% while as at all India level it is mere 3.7%.
    Also in Urban areas of Jammu and Kashmir, the rate of unemployment is 7.8% while as in rural areas it is 3.9%.
    As per the census 2001, the literacy rate of the state stood at 55.5%, which has increased further to 68.7 % as per present census 2011.The provisional population ( seven years and above) of the state as per census 2011 is 125.48 lakh persons out of which 72.450 lakh persons are literate. (KNS)

  • Congress says will boycott NC candidate in North Kashmir

    Can be an individual opinion; thankful to NC for its support in Jammu: Soz
    Srinagar: The state Congress is rocked by rebellion in Gurez with a former MLA and a Congress leader Faqir Mohammad Khan announcing a complete boycott of Shareef-u-Din Shariq, the coalition candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabah polls in North Kashmir constituency.
    Talking to KNS, Khan said: “The Congress workers here have decided to go for a complete boycott of National Conference candidate as the coalition government has failed us on every front.”
    He alleged that the National Conference led coalition government has benefited only NC workers and the Congress cadres have been left high and dry. “Our (Congress) workers have been ignored and neglected by this coalition government to the hilt,” he said, adding that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections will witness a complete boycott of the NC candidate from Baramulla Lok Sabah constituency.  
    He said that since the Congress workers in Gurez have decided to boycott the NC candidate, their support to any other political party cannot be ruled out in the upcoming Parliamentary polls in North Kashmir.
    Reacting to Khan’s announcement, Ghulam Nabi Monga, vice president PCC told KNS: “It is a totally wrong and immature statement from Faqir Khan. He is not authorized to make such statements. We (Congress) ensure that each and every vote of Congress is cast in favour of our coalition candidate (Sahreef-u-din Shariq). We strongly rebut Khan’s   announcement as it can be his personal opinion and not that of the party.”
    When contacted Pradesh Congress Committee president Prof Saifuddin Soz said that Khan’s opinion is his personal and the Congress has nothing to do with it. “I am sorting out such statements. It can be an individual statement. We are duty bound to support our coalition partner in the three seats of Kashmir valley as they will do it for us in the three seats of Jammu and Ladakh.”
    Soz added that the recently held joint rallies in Jammu, the National Conference has whole heartedly supported Congress candidates in that region. “I am thankful to the National Conference for its whole hearted support to our candidates. We have to go together and there is no question of not supporting the NC candidates in the three seats of Valley.”
    The PCC president also thanked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Ajay Sadhotra and Devender Rana  and other NC leaders for remaining present in the nomination functions of Congress candidates in Jammu.(KNS)
