  • Deadly Rift valley virus infects human cells, finds US based Kashmiri virologist

It can trigger pandemic in future, says Dr Safder

Srinagar, Apr 19: In a significant scientific breakthrough, researchers at Washington University in the United States have discovered how the deadly Rift Valley fever virus infects human cells.

The discovery has been done by a virologist from Zaloora, Sopore of north Kashmir Baramulla, Dr Safder Ganaie, one of the leading scientists involved in the discovery.

The discovery by Dr Ganaie and his colleagues was recently published in the prestigious journal Cell. He and his team found that the Rift Valley fever virus, speared by mosquitoes, enters human cells via a protein normally involved in mopping up low-density lipoproteins – the carriers of so-called ‘bad cholesterol’ — from the blood.

The discovery is expected to lead to therapies that prevent Rift Valley fever or reduce its severity. The World Health Organization lists Rift Valley fever as a prioritized disease likely to cause epidemics in the near future.

In an exclusive chat with news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Dr Ganaie said that the virus is spread by mosquitoes among domesticated animals, which then pass it on to people.

The study was conducted in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, University of Toronto, Harvard University, and Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and he was the lead author of the study, he said

To find out how the virus invades cells, Dr Ganaie and his team disrupted 20,000 normal genes by using CRISPR technology and found that the virus failed to infect cells that lacked the gene for LDL receptor-related protein 1, or LRP1. Further experiments showed that the virus needs LRP1 to infect hamster, bovine, monkey, and human cells, indicating that it uses the same protein across distantly related species.

“This discovery will help us to understand how the Rift Valley fever virus spreads not only throughout the human body but also how it is able to infect mosquitoes and different species of mammals,” he said.

Dr. Safder Ganaie is Kashmir based virologist in the USA. His research is focused on emerging and re-emerging viruses that cause fatal diseases in humans including Ebola, Hantavirus, Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, La Crosse, Rift Valley Fever and Oropouche virus.

He said we were working on the discovery for the last three years. Asked whether there is any chance of the virus spreading fast in the globe, he said WHO and US NIH declare these viruses category A pathogens with a potential to cause pandemic in future. After the virus attains certain mutations, they become highly infectious. But when it would happen, we don’t know. Therefore investigating these viruses and how they infect cells will help us to develop treatment in advance.

These viruses are investigated in only highly equipped bio-containment laboratories of biosafety level -3 and -4. In the past decade, Dr Ganaie has made several discoveries regarding how these viruses infect human, and animals. Most of these viruses don’t have any virus specific treatment available.

His studies have been published in the highly reputed international journals of virology including Cell, PLos Pathogens, Journal of Virology, mBio.

He completed his primary education from his native village and got his Bachelor’s degree in Science from Degree College Sopore. Dr Ganaie joined Kashmir University for his Master’s degree in Biotechnology. After completing his master’s, he did qualify fellowship exams like CSIR, UGC, ICMR-Junior Research Fellowship, and GATE exams to pursue research in the bioscience field.

In 2012 he decided to pursue his PhD in the United States and joined the University of Kansas. He earned his PhD degree with honours from The University of Kansas. For his outstanding research accomplishments, he received the 2018-Micro Remi Amelunxen Award from the University of Kansas. He has received awards and presented at different international conferences in the USA and China—(KNO)

  • Kashmiri Pandits demand SIT probe into ‘illegal lease, sale’ of temple properties in Valley

Allege that despite repeated court orders, temple properties have been illegally given on lease which in cumulative analysis is a large-scale fraud

New Delhi, April 18: Migrant Kashmiri Pandits led by the Reconciliation, Return and Rehabilitation of Migrants, a private organisation, have demanded a SIT probe into alleged large-scale racket of leasing and selling of land of temples in the Valley by some people in connivance with government officials.

The Reconciliation, Return and Rehabilitation of Migrants works for migrants of Kashmir.

The Pandits held a protest over the matter. They have appealed to the Lt Governor ofJ&K, Manoj Sinha, to immediately order the probe.

They alleged the Jammu and Kashmir administration/revenue department has failed to protect the temple properties and has been unable to vacate the temple properties/premises which have been illegally leased out by the respective managements which had become defunct and dubious.

They said in the absence of Pandit community in the valley, a few people in collusion with the J&K govt officialsoperated defunct temple trusts in between 1989 till 2022 andsold out/leased out temple properties.

“We request Honorable Lt Governor that an SIT probebe ordered immediately and the government officials should also be identified who in connivance with a selective group of people operated defunct temple trusts in between 1989 – 2022 and sold out/leased out temple properties in Kashmir illegally,” Reconciliation, Return and Rehabilitation of Migrants chairman Satish Mahaldar said.

He added that despite repeated court orders, temple properties have been illegally given on lease which in cumulative analysis is a large-scale fraud.

Besides the court orders, there is Jammu and Kashmir Migrant Immovable Property (Preservation, Protection and Restraint on Distress, Sales) Act, 1997 vogue, which has been breached time and again.

The protesters said it is surprisinghow non-resident Kashmiri migrants are allowed to sell temple properties when the respective districts deputy commissioners are the custodians of all migrant properties.

They expressed concern that the J&K governmenthas failedto retrieve the land, and also not taken action against these defunct trusts/societies.

“We suspect that the J&K government is protecting its employees who are involved in selling temple properties for a long time,” Mahaldar alleged.

  • New Pak PM Pitches For Dialogue with India

New Delhi- Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has written a letter to his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, pitching for “meaningful” engagement between the two countries, people familiar with the development said on Sunday.

Sharif’s communication on Saturday came in response to a letter sent by Modi to the Pakistani leader congratulating him on becoming the prime minister, they said.

In his letter a few days ago, Modi conveyed to Sharif that India desired constructive ties with Pakistan.

On April 11, the Pakistan parliament selected Sharif as the 23rd prime minister of the country, a day after Imran Khan was ousted from power in a no-confidence vote.

In a Twitter post, Modi congratulated Sharif on becoming the prime minister of Pakistan and said India desires peace and stability in a region “free of terrorism”.

“Congratulations to H. E. Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on his election as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. India desires peace and stability in a region free of terror, so that we can focus on our development challenges and ensure the well-being and prosperity of our people,” he tweeted on April 11.

In his response, Sharif said Pakistan desires peaceful and cooperative ties with India.

“Thank you Premier Narendra Modi for felicitations. Pakistan desires peaceful & cooperative ties with India. Peaceful settlement of outstanding disputes including Jammu & Kashmir is indispensable. Pakistan’s sacrifices in fighting terrorism are well-known. Let’s secure peace and focus on socio-economic development of our people,” the Pakistan prime minister tweeted.

It is learnt that Sharif, in his reply to Modi’s letter, also sought resolution of the outstanding issues, including that of Kashmir, while maintaining that Pakistan favours peaceful and cooperative ties with India.

India has been maintaining that it desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan while insisting that the onus is on Islamabad to create an environment “free of terror and hostility” for such an engagement.

The ties between India and Pakistan came under severe strain after India’s warplanes pounded a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp in Balakot in Pakistan in February 2019 in response to the Pulwama attack.

The relations further deteriorated after India in August 2019 announced withdrawing special powers of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcation of the state into two union territories.

“The government’s consistent position has been that India desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan and is committed to addressing issues, if any, bilaterally and peacefully in an atmosphere free of terror, hostility and violence,” Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said in Parliament on April 7 while replying to a question.

“The onus is on Pakistan to create such a conducive atmosphere,” he added.

Fever, runny nose, and cough are common right now.

He said children should consume a healthy diet and drink lukewarm water to stay hydrated.

He said that there is no need for unnecessary panic as children can get two or three viral infections and sometimes it can happen in a single month but there is no need to worry as it is attributed to one illness—(KNO)

  • XE variant unlikely to cause new wave of Covid-19: DAK

Srinagar, Apr 12: With India reporting two cases of new XE variant, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Tuesday said it is unlikely to cause a new wave of Covid-19.

“The new variant is not a cause of concern for us and there is no need to worry about it,” said DAK President and Influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

“First detected in United Kingdom in January 2022, XE is a recombinant variant, which means it is a hybrid version of two most prevalent Omicron strains – BA.1 and BA.2,” he said.

Dr Hassan said most of our population has already been exposed to these variants in the third wave which was triggered initially by BA.1 and later by BA.2. Almost all People have antibodies against these sub variants by way of prior infection

“With high vaccination rates and natural immunity, the possibility of having a wave due to this variant is less,” he said

The DAK President said the fact that there has been no significant increase in the incidence of the XE variant since its detection 3 months ago shows that it is not something to be bothered about.

Omicron appeared in November 2021, and it was all over the world in 4-5 weeks and replaced Delta which caused the second wave in April- May last year.

“XE has not done that. It doesn’t look like we have to worry about it,” he said.

“Recombinant variants are not an unusual occurrence, particularly when there are several variants in circulation,” said Dr Nisar.

Two other recombinant variants – XD and XF which are combinations of Delta and Omicron have also been identified.

He said recombinants tend to last for lesser time. Virus fitness does not increase by a recombinant event.

“Frequent changes in genome structure are part of the natural life course of viruses and there is no need to panic,” he added.

  • Massive protests in Pakistan against Imran Khan’s ouster

Islamabad: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has taken out massive rallies in several cities across the country to protest against Imran Khan’s ouster as the Prime Minister through a no-confidence motion last night.

Protest rallies were held in various cities including Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, and Lahore with demonstrators shouting slogans against the Opposition.

Earlier, Khan said that today marked the beginning of a “freedom struggle” against what he called a “foreign conspiracy of regime change”.

In an attempt to galvanise his supporters, he said “it is always the people who protected their own sovereignty and democracy”.

“Pakistan became an independent state in 1947; but the freedom struggle begins again today against a foreign conspiracy of regime change.

It is always the people of the country who defend their sovereignty & democracy,” he said in another Tweet.

In Karachi, the city was lighted up for Imran Khan following his ouster.

In Islamabad, the protest started from Zero Point, with PTI supporters gathering and waving flags while chanting slogans in the former Prime Minister’s favour.

Flow of traffic at Srinagar Highway was affected due to the rally with long traffic lines forming, according to Dawn newspaper.

PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry had also called on the people to stage protests after Isha prayers while speaking to the media in Islamabad earlier in the day. He said that Khan not leading a massive movement would amount to a “betrayal with the country’s politics and Constitution”.

The party later issued a schedule of the various protests that were planned for cities all over the country starting 9:30 pm, according to Dawn newspaper.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan said that never have such crowds come out so spontaneously and in such numbers in our history, rejecting the “imported government-led by crooks.”

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan also expressed gratitude to the people of the country for supporting the protests against his ouster as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

“Thank you to all Pakistanis for their amazing outpouring of support and emotions to protest against US-backed regime change abetted by local Mir Jafars to bring into power a coterie of pliable crooks all out on bail.

Shows Pakistanis at home & abroad have emphatically rejected this,” Imran Khan tweeted.

The voting on the no-confidence motion against the Imran Khan-led PTI government began in the country’s National Assembly late on Saturday night where 174 members recorded their votes in favour of the resolution that ousted Imran Khan.

  • YouTube Terminates Preacher Dr Israr Ahmad’s Official Channel

SRINAGAR: Free video-sharing website, YouTube has terminated the official archive of Dr Israr Ahmad, a Muslim scholar for its “anti-Semitic content” that could otherwise have spread hatred against Jews. Various Jewish sites are celebrating the happening, reports appearing in various media suggest.

The deletion coincided with the Muslim holy month of fasting, during which the site was getting maximum traffic.

“Upon review, we removed the channel belonging to Israr Ahmad for violating our hate speech policies and a further eleven videos have been removed either as a result of this circumvention or for violating our violent extremism and hate speech policies,” YouTube was quoted as saying in some media.

Confirming the removal of the channel, Tanzeem-e-Islami, a movement initiated by Dr Israr Ahmad condemning the act. The organization believed the deletion was driven by Islamophobia. The channel had had around three million subscribers and was maintained by the late scholar’s son, Asif Hameed.

The channel was revered by Muslims across the world as it contained a good deal of Islamic knowledge that has caused a great loss to the Muslim community.

While denouncing the devastating step taken by the tech-giant YouTube, reports appearing in Pakistan media said the Pakistani Telecommunications Authority (PTA) termed it a ‘unilateral shutdown’ and has sought its unblocking.

Reports appearing in the media said that the YouTube decision came in response to the complaint that Jewish Chronicle, a London-based weekly, had lodged in 2021. It was why; the reports added that the Jews celebrated the YouTube decision.

“YouTube has finally removed two channels linked to notorious hate preachers including one whose antisemitism inspired a British Islamist to travel to the US to take Jews hostage at gunpoint,” the Jewish Chronicle wrote. “After weeks of pressure from the JC, the tech giant today removed the channel of Israr Ahmed, and on Wednesday removed the channel of Wagdy Ghoniem. Between them, they had a combined total of more than 3.5 million subscribers.” Ghoniem is an Egyptian scholar.

Dr Israr Ahmad was born in undivided India and later moved to Pakistan. He died in 2010. He is one of the most popular scholars of Islam in the region, despite his death. His channel has almost 4000 videos. A medical doctor since 1954, he has been known as a preacher scholar, especially after 1965.
