  • Kashmiri Youth were saved due to curfew, internet suspension post article 370 abrogation: Amit Shah

Srinagar, Oct 23 : The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah on Saturday said that during the abrogation of article 370, internet ban and curfew saved lives of thousands of youth of the valley.

Shah while addressing youth at Raj Bhawan auditorium said that the people questioned curfew and communication blackout at that time, but had there been no curfew, they don’t know how many lives would have been lost. “The lives of Kashmiri youth have been saved by that decision which has been questioned on so many platforms.”

He said that three families ruled J&K for 70 years. “Why were 40000 people killed during their reign. Is there any explanation to those killings,” Shah questioned.

Shah said that the BJP government has made those things possible which were hampered during the 70 years rule of three families.

“Today we are witnessing development, employment and education in Jammu and Kashmir. This is a big change. Industries are coming up in J&K. Tourism sector is flourishing. Now no matter how much force one exerts, no one can stop this wind of change,” he said.

He said that he wants to assure the youth of Kashmir that no one can stop this change from happening and it’s a new era for Kashmir.

“Today, I came to Jammu and Kashmir after around 2 and a half years. It is a very contented moment for me as after the security review meeting, I am having an event with the youngsters of Youth Club,” he said while addressing members of J&K Youth Club.

About delimitation, Amit Shah said: “Why should we stop delimitation? Delimitation will happen, followed by elections and then restoration of statehood.”

He also said that he wants to make a friendly bond with the youth of Kashmir as they are the future of nation.

“5th August 2019 will be written in Golden letters. It was the end of terrorism, nepotism  and corruption in J&K. Now youth of J&K have to contribute in the development of the Union Territory, it is their responsibility,” Shah said.

He added that millitancy has reduced, stone pelting has become invisible post abrogation of article 370.

“I want to assure you that strict action will be taken against those who want to ruin peace of J&K. No one can obstruct development which is taking place here. It’s our commitment and we will definitely fulfill all our commitments,” he said.

Notably Amit Shah is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, he chaired a security review meeting and also visited the residence of slain inspector Parvez Ahmed, who was killed by militants last month. (KNS)

Jammu: National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah on Thursday batted strongly for talks with Pakistan and said “unless you do not talk to Pakistan, we can never live in peace in J&K”.

He said that if there would have been friendship between India and Pakistan, people would have come here (in Jammu and Kashmir) to eat and drink tea from Sialkot (Pakistan).

“We would have gone there (Sialkot). In the past, this was happening. People used to come in trains before Independence”, Abdullah said

“I confidently say, even today, unless you (India) don’t talk to Pakistan and shake hands of friendship with each other, we can never live in peace, never, take it from me in writing”, he said while addressing a party meeting here.

He said that wars have taken place between Indian and Pakistan.

“Only the poor got killed in these four wars. In future war, this will happen again. Both have nuclear bombs. It will be more disastrous,” Abdullah added.

  • Pakistan to remain on ‘Grey List’ of global terror financing watchdog FATF

Pakistan will continue to be on the ‘Grey List’ of the FATF as it needs to “further demonstrate” that action is being taken against UN-designated terrorists like India’s most wanted Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar, the global body against terror financing said on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference, Financial Action Task Force (FATF) president Marcus Pleyer said the decision was taken at the conclusion of the virtual plenary of the organisation.

Pakistan continues to remain on the “increased monitoring list”, he said at a virtual press conference from Paris on Thursday.

Increased monitoring list is another name for the ‘Grey List’.

Inclusion in the ‘Grey List’ implies “strategic deficiencies” detected in a jurisdiction’s policies to prevent money laundering and the terror financing, according to an IMF working paper.

Not as severe as black listing, inclusion in the ‘Grey List’ shows that a country is working to remove flagged deficiencies.

Pleyer said that Pakistan has two concurrent action plans, actions against UN-designated terror groups and anti-money laundering, along with 34 action plan items.

It has now largely addressed 30 of the items, the president of the Paris-based FATF said.

Regarding its earlier action plan, which focused on terrorist financing issues, and dates back to June 2018, Pakistan is still assessed to have largely addressed 26 out of 27 items, Pleyer said.

“Pakistan has taken a number of important steps but needs to further demonstrate that investigations and prosecutions are being pursued against the senior leadership of UN-designated terror groups,” he said.

FATF is a global body which focusses on setting standards and promote effective implementation of legal, regulatory and operational measures for combating money laundering, terrorist financing and other related threats to the integrity of the international financial system.

Refuting allegations of political interference in the FATF listing process, Pleyer said the organisation works on the basis of “technical arguments”.

One of the outstanding items from the 2018 action plan focussing on terror financing is that Pakistan needs to demonstrate that terrorist financing investigations and prosecutions are targeting senior leaders and commanders of UN-designated terrorist groups, Pleyer said.

Then there is this 2021 action plan which is focusing more on anti-money laundering issues, he said.

“Its most recent action plan from June this year which largely focused on money laundering deficiencies was issued after FATF regional partner the Asian Pacific Group identified a number of serious issues,” Pleyer said.

The UN-designated terrorists based in Pakistan include Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Azhar, Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Saeed and its ‘operational commander’ Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.

Azhar, Saeed and Lakhvi are the most wanted terrorists in India for their involvement in numerous terrorist acts, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and bombing of a CRPF bus at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. (PTI)
