  • COVID third wave likely to hit India this month; Study

The third wave of COVID-19 will likely hit India this month as the daily infections tally will go up to 100,000 in the best-case scenario or to 150,000 in the worst-case scenario, a study done by IIT researchers has predicted.

The research, led by Mathukumalli Vidyasagar and Manindra Agrawal at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad and Kanpur, the surge in COVID cases in August will push the third wave which may peak in the month of October.

States with high COVID-19 cases such as Kerala and Maharashtra could ‘skew the picture,’ Mathukumalli Vidyasagar told Bloomberg.

India is currently reporting COVID cases nearing 40,000 daily as Kerala is the biggest contributor to the tally as it is reporting nearly or over 20,000 infections in a day.

On Sunday, India reported 41,831 cases of COVID-19 and 541 deaths from the pandemic. The central government cautioned 10 states, asking them to take strict measures as COVID infections are rising.

However, the next COVID wave is likely to be far smaller than the second wave that hit India in April and peaked at a record 4 lakh-plus cases on May 7 and started declining after.

The researchers, whose prediction is based on a mathematical model, said that India still needs to accelerate its vaccination campaign, deploy surveillance methods to catch emerging hotspots, and stay vigilant through genome sequencing as new variants could emerge, Bloomberg reported.

Experts have also warned that the highly transmissible Delta variant of coronavirus can fuel the surge. In May, June, and July, nearly eight out of every 10 COVID cases were caused by the Delta variant, according to data from the Indian Sars-CoV-2 Genomic Consortium (INSACOG).

  • Ex-cop caught ferrying militants let off the hook while innocent Kashmiris rot in jails: Mehbooba

Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday alleged that former Jammu and Kashmir police officer Davinder Singh, who was caught ferrying militants in a vehicle last year, was let off the hook by the Centre while innocent Kashmiris rot in jails for years under anti-terror laws.

Accusing the government of having double standards, Mehbooba said Kashmiris are “considered guilty until proven innocent”.

Mehbooba”s remarks came after a copy of a government order dated May 20 dismissing Singh, a deputy superintendent of police, from service went viral on social media.

Lt Governor Manoj Sinha had ordered Singh”s dismissal from service with “immediate effect” under Article 311 of the Constitution, according to the official order. This provision enables the government to withdraw presidential pleasure without holding an inquiry and the decision can only be contested in the high court.

“Innocent Kashmiris arrested under anti-terror laws rot in jails for years. For them the trial becomes the punishment. But GOI (Government of India) doesn”t want an enquiry against a cop caught red-handed with militants. Is it because he colluded with the system to orchestrate certain dodgy incidents?” Mehbooba asked in a tweet.

She said Kashmiris are “considered guilty until proven innocent”.

“Whether for governments job or even a passport, they (Kashmiris) are subjected to the worst kind of scrutiny. But when a policeman is known to have facilitated militants he is let off the hook. The double standards & dirty games is obvious,” she added.

Singh was arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in January last year when he was ferrying Hizbul Mujahideen militants to Jammu from Kashmir. The case was investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and it filed a charge sheet against Singh and others.

According to the NIA charge sheet, Singh was tasked by his Pakistani handler with establishing a “contact” in the Ministry of External Affairs for carrying out espionage activities.

Singh used his own vehicle for the movement of the Hizbul Mujahideen militants and also assured them help in procuring weapons, the NIA alleged.—(PTI)

  • Muharram procession allowed in Srinagar after 30 years; Shia leaders hail decision

After a gap of over 30 long years, the Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to allow the Muharram process in Srinagar, the summer capital of the Union Territory.

Although most of the Shia organizations of Kashmir Valley have hailed this decision, former National Conference minister, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has raised questions over the timing of allowing Muharram procession.
“We at All Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association welcome the Govt’s decision to allow Muharram procession in Kashmir after a gap of 3 decades. Inshallah AJK Shia Association will lead the procession this year as per past practice”, Imran stated in another tweet.
Hailing the decision, another prominent Shia leader, Abid Hussain Ansari asked the government to take effective steps to ensure smooth passing of the process.
After a gap of more than 30 years, the divisional administration, Kashmir today allowed the Muharram processions that are set to be taken out across the Valley with the commencement of the holy month of Muharram.
In this regard, a meeting under the chairmanship of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Pandurang K Pole was held and it was decided that Muharram-ul-Haram 1443 (Hijri), shall be observed as per the past practice. “However, in view of the COVID, the guidelines shall be adhered in letter and spirit,” read the minutes of the meeting. The administration said that all the necessary arrangements shall be put in place for the convenience of the people and the decision of the commemoration of Muharram shall be left up to the Shia Organisation for which all the Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police shall be in touch with them.
The dates, as per the minutes of the meeting, on which the procession will be held in various districts have been spelt out as: 6th Muharram from Gulshan Bagh to Zadibal, on 7th Muharram Kathi Darwaza to Hassanabad, 8th Gurubazar to Dalgate, 9th Mandibal to Zadibal, 10th Abi Guzar to Lal Chowk, 11th Rainawari to Hassanabad and Zadibal interiors, and on the 25th Muharram, Mirgund to Budgam.
Notbaly, the traditional Muharram procession used to be taken out from various areas in the Srinagar City way back in 1990s. However, the same were banned by the Government citing varied reasons.
The DCs in this regard have been asked to formulate a plan so that arrangements for the commemoration of Muharram 2021 are organised in the right manner.
The Div Com reiterated that developmental works which are part of the current year’s developmental action plan shall be taken up for execution so that the facilities are made available to the Shia Community before the commencement of the Muharram.
However, the decision of the administration has evoked mixed responses from the Shia political and religious leaders.
President All J&K Shia Association and general secretary J&K Peoples’ Conference, Imran Ansari while commending the administration for the decision taken, asked Aga Syed Hassan Al Moosavi to join the procession on the 10th of Muharram.
“We at All Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association welcome the Government’s decision to allow Muharram procession in Kashmir after a gap of three decades. Inshallah AJK Shia Association will lead the procession this year as per past practice,” Ansari wrote on twitter.
In another tweet, he wrote: “As a mark of respect for Shaheede Karbala Moula Imam Hussain (AS) I request Hujat ul Islam Aga Syed Hassan Al Moosavi Sb to join us at Abiguzar where the Jaloos of Ashoora will commence its journey after a gap of more than 30 years.”
However, to the contrary, the NC leader and a former legislator from Budgam, Ruhullah Mehdi expressed a different view and asked the administration to “lift the ban on Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid too.”
In a series of tweets, Mehdi said that “people should not fall for this bait and into this trap.”
“If the Friday prayers and other major religious functions (across all religions) continue to be banned and this particular procession suddenly encouraged in isolation. In that case, I see nefarious designs behind it. The people should not fall for this bait and into this trap,” he tweeted.
In another tweet, in this regard, he urged the administration to come clean on the issues and said, “To answer those questions and to make it clear that there are no nefarious designs behind this decision, this 10th Muharram procession should be preceded by Friday prayers at Jama Masjid before this 10th Muharram. Friday prayers before this year’s 10th Muharram should precede.”
Mehdi urged the administration to lift the ban on Friday prayers on Jamia. “Therefore the responsibility lies with the administration to come clean. Now that the time for Eid prayer this year has passed. Lift the ban on Friday prayers at Jama Masjid too, like you suddenly took this decision and prove that there are no nefarious designs.
