  • Doctors perform unnecessary cesarean deliveries for financial gains

Srinagar, Feb 06: With alarming rise in unnecessary Cesarean deliveries in Kashmir valley, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Saturday said majority of these surgeries are done for financial gains.

“Doctors are motivated by money to perform needless surgical deliveries,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

“Birth has become a lucrative business in Kashmir,” he said.

“There is a well-oiled nexus between private hospitals and doctors that is pushing patients into cesareans they don’t need.”

“A perception has been generated that cesareans are better than normal deliveries,” DAK President said.

“In order to convince perfectly healthy women to opt for elective cesarean section, doctors tell them about so called benefits of the surgery.”

“First time mothers are especially targeted because if a woman has C-section once, she would need surgeries for subsequent pregnancies,” he said.

“Doctors make more money for cesarean than a normal delivery and hospitals rake in money for patient’s longer stay and medical attention.”

“A cesarean is less time consuming and more profitable,” Dr Nisar said.

“A doctor would do 12 cesareans in the time it takes to do one normal delivery.”

“In government hospitals too, surgical births have increased dramatically,” he said.

“To learn the technique postgraduate students perform cesareans when they are not required.”

“C-section delivery is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through incision in the abdomen and the uterus,” Dr Nisar said.

“While WHO states that Cesarean rates should not be more than 10 percent of the total deliveries and must be performed in emergency cases, the rates at Kashmir hospitals are as high as 80 percent.”

He said unnecessary Cesarean section delivery is risky to both mother and child.

For mother, C-section raises the chances of complications such as blood loss, infection or blood clots.

Studies indicate that the chance of maternal mortality is 4-5 times after an elective cesarean than a normal delivery.

For the newborn, it means delayed breast feeding, lower birth weight, respiratory problems and increased rate of hospitalization.

“The natural birth is the ideal way and if it was better to deliver through the stomach, nature would have surely made it so,” said Dr Nisar.

  • US President Biden intends to revoke the terrorist designation for Yemen’s Houthi movement

The United States intends to revoke the terrorist designation for Yemen’s Houthi movement in response to the country’s humanitarian crisis, reversing one of the most criticised last-minute decisions of the Trump administration.

The reversal, confirmed by a State Department official on Friday, comes a day after President Joe Biden declared a halt to US support for the Saudi Arabia-led military campaign in Yemen, widely seen as a proxy conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

“Our action is due entirely to the humanitarian consequences of this last-minute designation from the prior administration, which the United Nations and humanitarian organizations have since made clear would accelerate the world’s worst humanitarian crisis,” the official said.

In a statement, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, welcomed the decision.

Just days before his term in office ended on January 20, then-US President Donald Trump designated the Houthis a “foreign terrorist organisation” – effectively barring US citizens and entities from interacting financially with the group.

The United Nations describes Yemen as the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis, with 80 percent of its 24 million people in need, and it warned the Trump administration that the designation would push millions in Yemen into a large-scale famine.

The State Department official has also stressed that the latest action has “nothing to do” with the US view of the Houthis and their “reprehensible conduct”, and repeated Washington’s commitment to helping Saudi Arabia to defend its territory against further such attacks.

The Trump administration exempted aid groups, the United Nations, the Red Cross and the export of agricultural commodities, medicine and medical devices from its designation, but UN officials and aid groups said the carve-outs were not enough and called for the decision to be revoked.

The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, including large numbers of civilians, and created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

A Saudi-led coalition intervened in March 2015 on the side of the government and enjoyed the backing of the Trump administration, with the war increasingly seen as a proxy conflict between the US and Iran.

But the mounting civilian death toll and growing humanitarian calamity fuelled bipartisan demands for an end to US support for Riyadh.

Human Rights Watch said in its World Report 2021 published in January that the parties to Yemen’s armed conflict continued to violate the laws of war in 2020, including committing new war crimes.

HRW reported that the coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as Houthi forces, launched mortars, rockets, and missiles into heavily populated areas.

  • Chinese actions seriously disturbed peace, tranquillity along LAC: Govt

New Delhi: Chinese military’s attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh have seriously disturbed peace and tranquillity in the region, the government said in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said the attempts have been responded to “appropriately” by the Indian armed forces and it has been made clear to the Chinese side that such unilateral attempts are “unacceptable”.
In a written response to a question on the overall boundary issue with China, the minister said the two sides have agreed to seek a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution through dialogue and negotiations.
He said the two sides also agreed that pending final settlement of the boundary question, maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the border areas is an essential basis for the overall development of the bilateral relationship.
“However, since April/May 2020 the Chinese side undertook several attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo along the LAC in western sector. These attempts have been responded to appropriately by our armed forces,” Muraleedharan said.
“It has also been made clear to the Chinese side that such unilateral attempts are unacceptable. These actions have seriously disturbed the peace and tranquillity along the LAC in the western sector,” he said.
The government often refers to eastern Ladakh as western sector.
The minister also said that India’s engagement with China is “complex”.
“In the last few years, the two sides have agreed to manage their differences and not allow differences on any issue to become disputes, “ he said.
In addition, he said, the two sides also agree that the future direction of ties should be built upon mutual respect for each other’s developmental aspirations bearing in mind the importance of respecting each other’s sensitivities, concerns and aspirations.
On the eastern Ladakh standoff, he said: “Over the last several months, we have been engaged with the Chinese side through diplomatic and military channels to ensure complete disengagement from all friction points and full restoration of peace and tranquillity in the India-China border areas.
Muraleedharan also referred to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on September 10 in Moscow and said they agreed that the current situation in the border areas is not in the interest of either side.
“They agreed therefore that the border troops of both sides should continue their dialogue, quickly disengage, maintain proper distance and ease tensions,” he said.
He said both sides held six meetings of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China border affairs (WMCC) and nine meetings of senior commanders.

  • Pakistan mobile signals in Jammu triggers panic among security officials, Alert Issued

    Raid conducted in Anantnag

Jammu: The security forces on Friday issued a high alert after Jammu and its adjoining areas received Pakistan mobile signals, causing panic among the people in the region. Following this, the Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted searches in city’s Bharat Nagar area, reported Dainik Jagran. The report further claimed that raids were also conducted in Anantnag.

“However, the search operation, which lasted for nearly three hours, was stopped because the agencies didn’t find any suspicious activities in the region,” Dainik Jagran quoted a senior police official as saying.

Quoting sources, the Dainik Jagran report claimed that security agencies are on high alert as they fear that the signals might be used by militants hiding in the Valley, adding that some residents might also use Pakistani SIM cards.

The intelligence agencies had earlier also issued an alert, saying Pakistan is trying to resurrect militant groups in Jammu and Kashmir and might enhance its mobile coverage in the Valley. They also claimed that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), along with Khalistani militants, is also planning to carry out attacks across India, especially in Punjab, New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the alert, five militants, backed by ISI, were arrested by the Delhi Police after a shootout in the national capital. The Delhi Police later said that huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the militants.
