  • Army gives ‘Jadoo ki Jhappi’ to South Kashmir locals to ‘calm down’ Valley

The army launched the ‘Operation Calm Down’ in South Kashmir earlier this month.

Blending its Operation ‘Calm Down’ with ‘Jadoo ki Jhappi’ (magical hug), Army is now foraying into the interiors of South Kashmir, giving semblance of law and order and building up confidence among the locals to open their establishments which have been shut for nearly three months.

At the break of dawn, Colonel Dharmendra Yadav, in-charge of the most sensitive Anantnag district, takes out his jeep to take a round of his ‘Area of Responsibility’ or popularly known as AOR. He mingles with locals, interacts with them, especially the children.

Col Yadav and his team is often greeted by the villagers and children while passing through. “No doubt they have restored some law and order in many areas of the district,” says Ghulam Mohiudden, a teacher. He was encouraged by the army personnel to teach children in a makeshift school so that their education is not affected any further.

A resident of Gurgaon, Col Yadav often meets the village elders and is seen greeted by an affectionate hug which he calls a ‘Jadoo ki Jhapi’. “At times such colloquial terms do come handy for us to reach out to the civilians. I did watch Munnabhai MBBS some years back..the movie was a hit and so is the formula here,” he says as a group of children surround him.

Col Yadav was part of the team of young Army officers involved in the encounter in Bumdoora village in which Burhan Wani and his two aides were killed. However, he refrains from sharing any details of the encounter, saying, “this was part of my duty and we don’t share operational details. The matter is over and out for me and my team.”

After the army launched the ‘Operation Calm Down’ in South Kashmir earlier this month, Col Yadav got his men back from highway domination and started getting into the interior areas clearing maximum of the arterial roads leading to the National Highway.

“Restoration of connectivity was imperative and opening of schools a necessity as I don’t want the children to become victims of the conflict,” he observes. A father of two, Col Yadav spends time with the children and elders in various villages of his AOR. “Whenever I miss my kids, I come here, talk to these children and guide them the way a father is supposed to,” says Col Yadav while gently stroking the hair of Shamim, a student of Class IV.

As he starts for another adjacent village Rainpora, Col Yadav is seen off by a local Imam with a famous ‘Jadoo ki Jhapi’ as he also extends his gratitude to the officer for getting the schools and local shops reopened and bringing some peace to the village.

Raja Begum, who operates a shop in the adjacent Rainpora village, which is 80 km from Srinagar, is seen selling essential commodities. “My husband has gone to Srinagar to get some more stocks. While the condition here is fine, I am not sure when he will be able to return as the situation in other parts of the Valley is not as good,” she quips.

Within no time, the children from the nearby locality gather near the shop because their “Army uncle” had come. “This is a name that I have not demanded but earned. Many of them want to become army officers,” says Col Yadav.

Having done the rounds, Col Yadav reaches his battalion headquarters where a list as well as pictures of wanted militants, believed to be hiding in his area, are on display. After his routine pep up talk to his team and daily update, he shares his time with “Naujawan (young) club” where they enjoy Internet facility, games and gym aided by the Army.

The club is packed with young men and children engaged in various activities. Besides, a group of locals is also present there to share their worries and grievances with the army officer. After redressing their grievances, Col Yadav does not forget to give his dose of Jadoo ki Jhappi to all those who now seem to be at some ease with his assurances of looking into their problems personally.

As troubles and turbulences continue unabated in the Valley, the army quietly moved an entire brigade to South Kashmir as part of operation ‘Calm Down’ to clear it of the militants and protestors.

The operation was warranted in the wake of intelligence reports suggesting a virtual ‘Jungle Raj’ in areas of South Kashmir where militants and their sympathisers are calling the shots, holding protests and blocking the arterial roads. Nearly 4,000 additional troops have been pressed into service to restore normalcy but with clear instructions to use minimum force.

However, the new personnel, mobilised from reserves, have fanned out in all the four districts of South Kashmir — Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag and Kulgam — along the highway whereas the stationed troops have been pressed back into counter-insurgency operations. (PTI)

  • Tarigami denounces repression, accused forces of berserk

Advocates two tier dialogue for K-issue

Srinagar: CPI (M) senior leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami Wednesday accused the security forces of going “berserk” and causing damage to public and private property in Kashmir.
Addressing media persons at his Gupkar residence, Tarigami said that protectors of law have become law breakers.
“We have received information from reliable sources that security forces are going berserk, damaging household items, beating inmates. We will not oblige those who are responsible for repression. We want peace to prevail but not the silence of graveyard,” he said.
He said that trust cannot be built by using of indiscriminate use of draconian laws against people, arresting innumerable youth and suppressing the voices.
He said that his party rejects repression and want peace to prevail in valley but not the silence of graveyard.
“Massive damages have been caused by the security forces to residential houses and vehicles across the valley on the pretext of dealing the protests, which is unwarranted and unfortunate,” he said.
He also demanded setting up of judicial commission headed by retired Supreme Court Judge to ascertain the facts about civilian killings during ongoing unrest in Kashmir.
He advocated initiation of two tier dialogue to resolve Kashmir issue. However, he said that holding of plebiscites is not the point of view of his party.
“We have received information from reliable sources that security forces are going berserk, damaging household items, beating inmates. We will not oblige those who are responsible for repression. We want peace to prevail but not the silence of graveyard,” he said.
“Although visit of All Party Delegation (APD) was a late initiative even then could be termed as a welcome move. However nothing has come to the fore regarding the deliberations held with union Home Ministry and the recommendations put forth by the parliamentarians of the group,” he added.
“The standstill caused has up scaled the disillusionment and alienation among the people of the state. Everything has been kept in-camera making the approach of the government in tackling the Kashmir issue questionable,” he said.
He said that the delay tactics seemingly adopted by the government in initiating a credible and comprehensive dialogue with the stake-holders amounts to disservice to the people and having dangerous implications. “It is a presumption that as if government of India is left with the sole option of using excessive forces to pacify the unrest and trying to put the issue under carpet which is not in the interest of anyone. Union government has shown no signs of changing its approach in tackling the situation in the valley and banning the lethal pellet guns,” he said.
He reiterated that there is no way-out available to settle the issues amicably other than dialogue with all the stake holders.
“A purposeful and logical dialogue demands constitution of a committee of parliamentarians across the political spectrum assisted with experts and mandated with an initiation of serious and unconditional political dialogue for resolution of Kashmir issue,” he said.
“Present unrest has strongly demonstrated that the issue cannot be shelved anymore and the steps taken in the past with a sole purpose of crisis management must not be repeated. If it happens there could be a serious threat to the peace in the region and is bound to deepen disillusement and disappointment among the people,” he added.
He said that both central and state governments are under an obligation to take urgent steps for building shattered confidence by immediately stopping indiscriminate arrests and slapping of Public Safety Act (PSA) on the youth.
“The cases of detained youth need to be reviewed as random arrestees are being made and the draconian PSA slapped without sustentative and valid reasons. Time bound judicial probes must be conducted in all incidents in which innocent lives were lost and banning of pellet guns must be ensured.
He also demanded adequate compensation for the victim families and rehabilitation of those maimed and blinded in forces action.
He said that draconian laws must be repealed and controversial AFSPA must be withdrawn for restoring the confidence of people.
“There is no alternative to talking and the recent unfortunate incident at Uri should not be an excuse for confrontations and hostilities between the two neighbouring countries of the region. India and Pakistan should not treat Kashmir as a chess board and must shun the rigidities for paving a way for lasting solution of the vexed Kashmir problem,” he said. (KNS)

“Nitish Kumar says that I regard myself as the ‘ mai baap’ of Bihar. No Nitishji, I am not the ‘mai baap’ of Biharis but their Shakuni Mama,” he wrote in an another post. (PTI)
  • Attack on Kashmiri students attempt to vitiate Kashmir situation: Salman Nizami

SRINAGAR: Reacting to the attacks on the Kashmiri students in Haryana and Rajasthan institutions following the current situation in Kashmir, Congress today condemned these attacks and expressed grave concern over the safety of students. Congress leader Salman Nizami said “Reports of such incidents pouring in almost on regular basis are shocking and the menace has now reached an alarming stage”. Nizami said that under a planned conspiracy Kashmiris were being beaten, those spreading hate against Kashmir’s go unnoticed and in fact are being often rewarded. But, our students are being harassed, tortured, humiliated and disgraced one way or the other only for being Kashmiris and are being treated as anti-nationals, “there is no logic to threaten Kashmiris in many parts of India only for the reason that the right wing Hindu organizations derive pleasure out of it. He said, “Whoever disagrees with BJP’s version of truth is called anti-national or terrorist, there are no of complaints of harassment and discrimination against Kashmiri students outside Jammu and Kashmir. One of the most common complaints is that they find it difficult to find a place to stay as many landlords refuse to rent their flat out to Kashmiris. The govt must ensure Kashmiri students aren’t thrashed in any part of the country. Let all those elements realize that they are adding fuel to the fire, and attacks on Kashmiris may polarize situation in Kashmir & will create more violence. Nizami said “It is the responsibility of govt to ensure that Kashmiri students, drivers and traders present in their respective states are not harassed. He further asked the govt to take all measure to ensure that the attackers get exemplary punishment under law so as to prove a deterrent for the others.
