{"id":17072,"date":"2019-03-14T09:46:15","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T04:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/?p=17072"},"modified":"2019-03-14T09:46:15","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T04:16:15","slug":"china-again-blocks-bid-at-un-to-list-jem-chief-masood-azhar-as-global-terrorist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=17072","title":{"rendered":"China again blocks bid at UN to list JeM chief Masood Azhar as \u2018global terrorist\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><i>Srinagar:<\/i><\/strong><i> In yet another setback to India\u2019s bid to designate Masood Azhar as a \u201cglobal terrorist\u201d, China on Wednesday put a technical hold on a proposal in the UN Security Council to ban him.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The proposal to designate Azhar under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council was moved by France, the UK and the US on February 27, days after a suicide bomber of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) killed 44 CRPF soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s Pulwama, leading to a flare-up in tensions between India and Pakistan.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee members had 10 working days to raise any objections to the proposal. The no-objection period deadline was scheduled to end at 3 PM local time (New York) Wednesday, (12:30 AM IST Thursday).<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Just before the deadline, China put a \u201ctechnical hold\u201d on the proposal, a diplomat at the UN said.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The diplomat said China asked for \u201cmore time to examine\u201d the proposal.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>All eyes were on China, which has in the past blocked India\u2019s bids to get Azhar listed as a UN-designated global terrorist thrice.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>According to the listing rules of the Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, if no objection is received by the end of the no-objection period, the decision will be deemed adopted.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>As it has done in the past, Beijing put a technical hold on the proposal just as the deadline was about to end.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>An inkling of China\u2019s stand on the issue came during Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang\u2019s press conferences on Monday and Wednesday in Beijing when he was asked about the proposal to list Azhar as a global terrorist by the UNSC.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe UN Security Council and its subsidiary bodies are run on strict rules. We already stressed China\u2019s position on the listing of terrorist organisations and individuals in the UN Security Council 1267 Committee on many occasions,\u201d Lu said on Monday.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cChina will continue to adopt responsible attitude and participate in the deliberations in the UNSC 1267 Committee,\u201d Lu said on Wednesday.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>On the issue of listing Azhar, he said, \u201cI want to say that China always adopts a responsible attitude, engage in consultations with various parties and properly deal with this issue.\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe discussions, I want to say must follow the rules and procedures of the relevant bodies and only the solution that is acceptable to all sides is conducive for resolving the issue,\u201d he said, indicating that Beijing may again block the move to list Azhar as a global terrorist.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Srinagar: In yet another setback to India\u2019s bid to designate Masood Azhar as a \u201cglobal terrorist\u201d, China on Wednesday put a technical hold on a proposal in the UN Security Council to ban him.
