The Wiesbaden prosecution&#8217;s office said they believe he died by suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all we are immensely sad,&#8221; Volker Bouffier said in a recorded statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hesse is home to Germany&#8217;s financial capital Frankfurt, where major lenders like Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank have their headquarters. The European Central Bank is also located in Frankfurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A visibly shaken Volker Bouffier recalled that Thomas Schaefer, who was Hesse&#8217;s finance chief for 10 years, had been working &#8220;day and night&#8221; to help companies and workers deal with the economic impact of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Today we have to assume that he was deeply worried,&#8221; said Volker Bouffier, a close ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s precisely during this difficult time that we would have needed someone like him,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Popular and well-respected, Thomas Schaefer had long been touted as a possible successor to Volker Bouffier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Volker Bouffier, Thomas Schaefer belonged to Angela Merkel&#8217;s centre-right CDU party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He leaves behind a wife and two children<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>(This story has not been edited by Kashmir Today staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coronavirus Outbreak: &#8220;We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all we are immensely sad,&#8221; a senior minister said.
