{"id":23846,"date":"2020-04-16T10:39:33","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T05:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/india-to-receive-normal-monsoon-forecasts-imd\/"},"modified":"2020-04-16T10:39:33","modified_gmt":"2020-04-16T05:09:33","slug":"india-to-receive-normal-monsoon-forecasts-imd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=23846","title":{"rendered":"India to receive normal monsoon, forecasts IMD"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>&#8216;Above normal rain likely in in August and September&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/india-to-receive-normal-monsoon-in-2020-forecasts-imd\/article31350804.ece\">PTI<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India will likely have a normal monsoon, with a chance of \u2018above normal\u2019 rain in August and September, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IMD issues a two-stage forecast: the first in April, followed by a more detailed one in the last week of May, which will also illustrate how the monsoon will spread over the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IMD\u2019s confidence stems largely from global weather models pointing to negligible chances of El Nino, a warming of the central equatorial Pacific that\u2019s associated with the drying up of monsoon rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also officially redefined the definition of what constitutes \u2018normal\u2019 rainfall and reduced it by 1 cm to 88 cm. The June-September rainfall accounts for 75% of the country\u2019s annual rainfall. \u201cQuantitatively, the monsoon seasonal rainfall is likely to be 100% of the Long Period Average (LPA) with a model error of \u00b1 5%. The LPA of the season rainfall over the country as a whole for the period 1961-2010 is 88 cm,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expectation of excess rain comes from a forecast by the dynamical model or the Monsoon Mission Coupled Forecast System \u2014 that relies on supercomputers, mathematically simulating the physics of the ocean and the atmosphere. According to this forecast, there is a \u201chigh probability (70%)\u201d for the rainfall to be \u201cabove normal to excess\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the IMD said in April that the monsoon would be \u2018near normal\u2019 or a tad below normal. India instead ended up with excess rainfall \u2014 or the maximum rainfall in a quarter century \u2014 largely owing to torrential rain in August and September from the unusual warming in the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dynamical model, while better at forecasting the state of the weather a week or two in advance, isn\u2019t yet considered reliable by meteorologists in forecasting the monsoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statistical models, which the IMD relied on to make its forecasts, had a 41% forecast probability of normal monsoon. In any given year, there is a 33% chance which is why, said Madhavan Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, there was \u201chigh confidence\u201d that the monsoon this year would be normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Indian Ocean Dipole, a temperature anomaly in the ocean that can increase monsoon rain, was also expected to be in a \u201cneutral\u201d state during the monsoon, the forecast added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The odds of excess rain or a drought are 9% each.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Above normal rain likely in in August and September&#8217; PTI India will likely have a normal monsoon, with a chance of \u2018above normal\u2019 rain in August and September, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.
