{"id":23919,"date":"2020-04-17T17:12:05","date_gmt":"2020-04-17T11:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/?p=23919"},"modified":"2020-04-17T17:12:05","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T11:42:05","slug":"dak-urges-immune-testing-for-recovered-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=23919","title":{"rendered":"DAK urges immune testing for recovered coronavirus patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Srinagar Apr 17:<\/em><\/strong><em> With reports that recovered coronavirus patients are getting reinfected, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Friday urged health authorities in Kashmir valley to test recovered patients for antibodies that would help us know whether they are immune for reinfection.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cPatients who recover are getting infected with the virus again,\u201d said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201c141 cases in South Korea who had recovered from the disease were tested positive for the virus again,\u201d he said.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cAbout 15 percent of recovered patients in the Southern Chinese city of Shenzhen were retested positive for the virus,\u201d he added.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Dr Nisar said while the recovery rate is promising, it does not mean that those who have been infected with the novel virus are not still at risk.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cHaving the virus once does not mean you can\u2019t get sick from it again,\u201d he said.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Dr Nisar said not all people who recover from coronavirus have the antibodies to fight a second infection<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cA new study from China suggests that some people who have recovered from coronavirus have very low or even undetectable levels of protective antibodies against the virus,\u201d he said.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe study found that almost a third of those who recovered had low levels of antibodies against the virus, with ten patients having no detectable levels of neutralizing antibodies at all,\u201d he added.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Dr Nisar said this raises concern that patients surviving COVID-19 don\u2019t develop immunity to prevent reinfection.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe low amounts of antibodies could affect herd immunity which is the resistance to the disease among the general population to stop its spread,\u201d he said.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cThis will also have implications for the development of a vaccine.
