{"id":24909,"date":"2020-05-05T23:00:25","date_gmt":"2020-05-05T17:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/former-jk-chief-minister-mehbooba-muftis-detention-under-psa-extended-by-three-months\/"},"modified":"2020-05-05T23:00:25","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T17:30:25","slug":"former-jk-chief-minister-mehbooba-muftis-detention-under-psa-extended-by-three-months-pdp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=24909","title":{"rendered":"Former J&amp;K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti\u2019s detention under PSA extended by three months"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Mehbooba Mufti was initially detained on August 5 last year.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/former-jk-chief-minister-mehbooba-muftis-detention-under-psa-extended-by-three-months\/article31512206.ece\">PTI<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Public Safety Act against former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti was extended by three months on Tuesday, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a brief order, district magistrate of Srinagar handed over the continuation of her custody at her residence, hours before her present term under the PSA was to expire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was initially detained on August 5 last year when the Centre abrogated special status of the erstwhile state and bifurcated it into two union territories \u2014 Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having spent over eight months in detention at two government facilities that were designated as sub-jails, Ms. Mufti was shifted to her home on April 7 as a partial relief to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Mufti heads the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which was in power in Jammu and Kashmir in alliance with the BJP till June 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially, she was taken into preventive custody. Later on February 5 this year, she was slapped with the PSA along with Omar Abdullah, who was released in March. Farooq Abdullah had been released early last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier, Ms. Mufti was lodged a government guesthouse in Chashma Shahi and a bunglow on Maulana Azad Road near Lal Chowk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daughter of Ms. Mehbooba, Ms. Iltija has moved a habeas corpus petition before the Supreme Court in February challenging her mother\u2019s detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A three-judge bench had issued a notice to the Jammu and Kashmir administration seeking its response on the plea and posted the matter for a hearing on March 18. However, the petition was not taken up for hearing due to the coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Habeas corpus is a writ seeking production of a person supposed to be in illegal detention before a court.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mehbooba Mufti was initially detained on August 5 last year.
