We are trying to confirm the number of passengers but initially it is 99 passengers and eight crew members,&#8221; said Abdul Sattar Khokhar, the spokesman for Pakistan&#8217;s aviation authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plane was about to land when it crashed near Model Colony, a neighbourhood of Karachi about 3.2km (two miles) north-east of Jinnah International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/375\/cpsprodpb\/8477\/production\/_112411933_mediaitem112411887.jpg\" alt=\"Map of Pakistan highlighting Lahore and Karachi\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan&#8217;s army said soldiers from its quick reaction force had reached the crash site to help rescue efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crash comes just days after the country began allowing commercial flights to resume after a coronavirus lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead wp-block-heading\">What is Pakistan&#8217;s safety record like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan has a chequered aviation safety record, including a number of airliner crashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2010, an aircraft operated by private airline Airblue crashed near Islamabad, killing all 152 people on board &#8211; the deadliest air disaster in Pakistani history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2012, a Boeing 737-200 operated by Pakistan&#8217;s Bhoja Air crashed in bad weather on its approach to land in Rawalpindi, killing all 121 passengers and six crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in 2016, a Pakistan International Airlines plane burst into flames while travelling from northern Pakistan to Islamabad, killing 47 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>With inputs from <\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-52766904?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bbbc.news.twitter%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&amp;at_medium=custom7&amp;at_custom2=facebook_page&amp;at_campaign=64&amp;at_custom3=BBC+News&amp;at_custom1=%5Bpost+type%5D&amp;at_custom4=E46C0802-9C17-11EA-AA29-936E96E8478F&amp;fbclid=IwAR3Rm4cO4-sefuvlcVWZsJjfArcxmZf-H-D9JlkFyREXKSmvXdfg3CbGzpE\">BBC World News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Pakistan International Airlines plane has crashed in Karachi on a flight from Lahore, aviation officials say.
