India is already called \u2018Bharat\u2019 in the Constitution\u201d, sayds CJI<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered that a plea to change India\u2019s name exclusively to \u2018Bharat\u2019 be converted into a representation and forwarded to the Union government for an appropriate decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBharat and India are both names given in the Constitution. India is already called \u2018Bharat\u2019 in the Constitution\u201d, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad A. Bobde orally said in a virtual court hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The petitioner, Namah, through his counsel, said \u2018India\u2019 is a name of foreign origin. The name can be traced back to the Greek term \u2018Indica\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counsel said, \u201cThe word \u2018Bharat\u2019 is closely associated to our Freedom Struggle. The cry was \u2018Bharat Mata ki Jai\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court said the petition be transformed into a representation and forwarded to the ministries, primarily the Ministry of Home Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The petition seeks an amendment\u00a0to Article 1 of the Constitution, which says \u201cIndia, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States&#8230;\u201d. It wants \u2018India\u2019 to be struck off from the Article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis will ensure citizens of this country to get over the colonial past and instil a sense of pride in our nationality. Will also justify the hard fought freedom by our freedom fighters\u201d, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2016 petition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The apex court had dismissed a similar petition in 2016. Then CJI T.S. Thakur orally remarked that every Indian had the right to choose between calling his country \u2018Bharat\u2019 or \u2018India\u2019 and the Supreme Court had no business to either dictate or decide for a citizen what he should call his country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you want to call this country Bharat, go right ahead and call it Bharat. If somebody chooses to call this country India, let him call it India.
