{"id":27750,"date":"2020-06-16T19:59:24","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T14:29:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/uk-begins-human-trials-for-covid-19-vaccine\/"},"modified":"2020-06-16T19:59:24","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T14:29:24","slug":"uk-begins-human-trials-for-covid-19-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=27750","title":{"rendered":"UK begins human trials for Covid-19 vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/m.timesofindia.com\/articleshow\/76405621.cms?utm_source=contentofinterest&#038;utm_medium=text&#038;utm_campaign=cppst\">PTI<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>London<\/strong>: A team of UK scientists hopes to receive approval to begin human trials of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vaccine in question would harness new technology, which would mean it could be manufactured in large quantities with equipment bought off the shelf, and be relatively cheap to produce at just \u00a33 ($3.76) per dose.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK government has given \u00a318.5 million in funding toward research and trials of the vaccine, with \u00a35 million more being donated from private sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientists, at Imperial College in London, said the new vaccine works by injecting a dose of approximately a thousandth of a thousandth of a gram of genetic material, called RNA, into the body, allowing it to begin multiplying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RNA would then cause human cells to begin producing a protein found on the surface of COVID-19 cells, in a large enough quantity to train the immune system to detect and neutralize the protein \u2014 enabling it to do the same if later infected with the virus itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Robin Shattock, the team\u2019s leader and a mucosal infection specialist at Imperial College, said the amount of RNA required would mean that a liter of the vaccine could be enough to inoculate 200 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt really is a tiny dose,\u201d he told The Times newspaper. \u201cThat\u2019s very good from a safety point of view but also in terms of production \u2014 it makes it much easier to scale up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Animal trials conducted on mice have returned positive results, though the team cautioned that at least one booster might be required were the effects of the initial dose of the vaccine to prove insufficient.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PTI London: A team of UK scientists hopes to receive approval to begin human trials of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine this week.
