{"id":31744,"date":"2020-08-22T07:51:18","date_gmt":"2020-08-22T02:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/?p=31744"},"modified":"2020-08-22T07:51:18","modified_gmt":"2020-08-22T02:21:18","slug":"kashmir-figures-in-china-pakistan-dialogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=31744","title":{"rendered":"Kashmir figures in China, Pakistan dialogue"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Both countries back each other on \u2018core national interests\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China and Pakistan on Friday said they would firmly back each other on \u201ccore national interests\u201d, as their Foreign Ministers discussed the Kashmir issue in their annual strategic dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, left, and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at the talks held in China\u2019s Hainan province.\" src=\"https:\/\/th.thgim.com\/news\/national\/1h5h25\/article32416362.ece\/alternates\/FREE_435\/22th-foreign\">Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, left, and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at the talks held in China\u2019s Hainan province. | Photo Credit: @SMQureshiPTI\/Twitter<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China said Pakistan was \u201cits staunchest partner in the region\u201d and it would \u201cfirmly support\u201d the country \u201cin safeguarding its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence\u201d and in \u201cstriving for a better external security environment,\u201d according to a \u201cjoint press release\u201d from Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the talks in China\u2019s Hainan province, China\u2019s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi both \u201cunderlined that a peaceful, stable, cooperative and prosperous South Asia was in common interest of all parties,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Call for dialogue<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cParties need to settle disputes and issues in the region through dialogue on the basis of equality and mutual respect,\u201d the release said. \u201cThe Pakistani side briefed the Chinese side on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, including its concerns, position and current urgent issues. The Chinese side reiterated that the Kashmir issue is a dispute left over from history between India and Pakistan, which is an objective fact, and that the dispute should be resolved peacefully and properly through the UN Charter, relevant Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements. China opposes any unilateral actions that complicate the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China\u2019s comments on \u201cunilateral actions\u201d echoed Beijing\u2019s multiple statements last year that hit out at India\u2019s move to dilute Article 370 and end statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. China had also opposed the creation of the Ladakh union territory and said the move had \u201cundermined China\u2019s sovereignty\u201d as it included Aksai Chin and areas claimed by China, although the internal reorganisation did not change India\u2019s external boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Xi\u2019s message<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, China also released what it called \u201can oral message\u201d from President Xi Jinping to his Pakistani counterpart, as well as a statement made by Mr. Wang, the Foreign Minister, at the talks. Both those statements did not mention the Kashmir issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Xi, in a message sent to mark the second meeting of a consultation mechanism among the political parties of both countries under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) plan, described the two countries as \u201cbrothers and partners\u201d and the CPEC as a landmark project of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He said China would work with Pakistan to \u201cjointly promote the unity and cooperation of countries in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Wang said both were committed \u201cto the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and support for multilateralism, free trade and win-win cooperation, and opposition to unilateralism, protectionism and coercive practices,\u201d said a statement from China\u2019s Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The press release from Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Ministry said both sides \u201cagreed on continuing their firm support on issues concerning each other\u2019s core national interests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Chinese side reiterated that Pakistan and China are iron brothers and Pakistan remains China\u2019s staunchest partner in the region and that China firmly supports Pakistan in safeguarding its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence, independently choosing a development path based on its national conditions, striving for a better external security environment and playing a more constructive role on international and regional affairs,\u201d it said. \u201cThe Pakistani side appreciated China for standing together with Pakistan in safeguarding its national security and sovereignty, and reaffirmed its firm support to China on affairs concerning China\u2019s core interests and issues of major concern, such as those related to Taiwan, Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both also agreed \u201cto strengthen cooperation on the Afghan issue\u201d and \u201cappreciated the efforts made by the Afghan government and the Taliban to initiate the Intra-Afghan negotiations.\u201d The press release said they encouraged parties in Afghanistan to \u201cseize this historic opportunity and commence the Intra-Afghan Negotiations at the earliest leading to durable peace and stability in Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>With inputs from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/kashmir-figures-in-china-pakistan-dialogue\/article32416363.ece?homepage=true\">The Hindu<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Both countries back each other on \u2018core national interests\u2019 China and Pakistan on Friday said they would firmly back each other on \u201ccore national interests\u201d, as their Foreign Ministers discussed the Kashmir issue in their annual strategic dialogue.
