{"id":34928,"date":"2020-11-08T19:41:23","date_gmt":"2020-11-08T14:11:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/?p=34928"},"modified":"2020-11-08T19:41:23","modified_gmt":"2020-11-08T14:11:23","slug":"pagd-parties-hope-biden-harris-will-maintain-their-stance-on-wrongs-done-in-kashmir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=34928","title":{"rendered":"PAGD parties hope Biden, Harris will maintain their stance on \u2018wrongs done in Kashmir\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>NC, PDP leaders say politics of polarisation are over with the victory of the Democrats in the US, which is a \u2018clear defeat of Right-wing extremism\u2019.<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Srinagar: The victory of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the 2020 US Presidential elections has instilled fresh hope among political parties in Jammu and Kashmir vis-a-vis the stand the Democrats have taken on Kashmir following the scrapping of Article 370 last August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Politicians in the Valley now expect US President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris to maintain their stance on Kashmir and be vocal about issues in the region to bring \u201cpeople of power to accountability\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Last October, Harris had said: \u201cWe have to remind the Kashmiris that they are not alone in the world. We are keeping a track on the situation. There is a need to intervene if the situation demands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Further, in a policy paper posted on Biden\u2019s campaign website in June this year, titled \u2018Joe Biden\u2019s agenda for Muslim American community\u2019, the President-elect had asked the Indian government to take \u201call necessary steps to restore the rights of all the people of Kashmir\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The paper also stated: \u201cRestrictions on dissent, such as preventing peaceful protests or shutting or slowing down the internet, weakens democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the US election results, former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah did not mince their words while commenting on the victory of Biden and Harris Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTheir win gives hope to the rest of the world that Right-wing extremism and those who sow division and hatred will sooner or later be relegated to the pages of history like Donald Trump,\u201d Mufti wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Congratulations to President-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeBiden?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JoeBiden<\/a> &amp; Vice President-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KamalaHarris?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@KamalaHarris<\/a>. Across the world, there are regimes, which are fascists in nature. They drew strength when Trump was in the office. We hope fascist forces will weaken and democracy becomes stronger and emboldened across the world,\u201d NC leader Imran Dar told ThePrint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBiden and Kamala Harris have already spoken their mind when our leadership was illegally detained. Both raised their voice for Kashmiris and Kashmiri leadership. They spoke about human rights violation and communication blockade. We are expecting they still hold that line and call out the wrongs that are being done whether in Kashmir or any other part of India. I am sure they will hold that line and bring people of power to accountability,\u201d added Dar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Clear defeat of Right-wing extremism\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sajad Lone-led People\u2019s Conference hoped that Biden and Harris would take a \u201cprincipled stance\u201d on Kashmir and won\u2019t \u201ctolerate what the Trump administration tolerated on Kashmir\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth have spoken about Kashmir in the past and we are hoping they take a principled stance on Kashmir along with human rights issues in India in future as well,\u201d said party spokesperson Adnan Ashraf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhether in the current scenario where they (US) are pushing hard for India to be a pivot in India-Pakistan strategy to balance China, we don\u2019t know (if) the criticism by Kamala Harris against the Modi government on Kashmir will translate into any change on the ground. But the Democrats will surely not tolerate what the Trump administration tolerated on Kashmir. They would raise their concerns given their record and previous utterances. We are hopeful that Democrats, especially Biden and Harris, will be vocal about human rights issues and rights of representation of people of Kashmir,\u201d Ashraf added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>PDP\u2019s Waheed Para described the Democrats\u2019 victory as the \u201cvictory of democracy, liberalism and secularism\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn a lot of ways, it offers a lot of hope to everyone. It is a clear defeat of Right-wing extremism. When Trump was in Delhi during the riots, he didn\u2019t utter a word.
