Qazigund, the gateway town of J&amp;K, recorded a low of 0.2\u00b0C against minus 0.4\u00b0C on the previous night and was the only place where mercury settled above sub-zero level. Against minus 1.5\u00b0C on the previous night in Kupwara, the mercury settled at minus 1.0 \u00b0C in the north Kashmir district, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort, recorded a low of minus 9.6\u00b0C against minus 7.8 \u00b0C on the earlier night, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kashmir is in the middle Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day winter period which commenced on December 21 and ends on January 31. The period is considered the harshest of the winter when the chances of snowfall are most frequent and maximum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cold wave, however, continues even after that in Kashmir with a 20-day-long &#8216;Chillai-Khurd&#8217; (small cold) and a 10-day-long &#8216;Chillai-Bachha&#8217; (baby cold). Already, Kashmir Valley has received heavy snowfall earlier this month, disrupting normal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Weatherman has forecast \u201cmainly dry weather\u201d in the next 24 hours and \u201cno significant change till January 17\u201d.
