Srinagar, Feb 06:<\/em><\/b> <\/em><\/b><\/span><\/span>With alarming rise in unnecessary Cesarean deliveries in Kashmir valley,<\/em> <\/em><\/b><\/span>Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Saturday said majority of these surgeries are done for financial gains.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDoctors are motivated by money to perform needless surgical deliveries,\u201d said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBirth has become a lucrative business in Kashmir,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a well-oiled nexus between private hospitals and doctors that is pushing patients into cesareans they don\u2019t need.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cA perception has been generated that cesareans are better than normal deliveries,\u201d DAK President said.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to convince perfectly healthy women to opt for elective cesarean section, doctors tell them about so called benefits of the surgery.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFirst time mothers are especially targeted because if a woman has C-section once, she would need surgeries for subsequent pregnancies,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDoctors make more money for cesarean than a normal delivery and hospitals rake in money for patient\u2019s longer stay and medical attention.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cA cesarean is less time consuming and more profitable,\u201d Dr Nisar said.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cA doctor would do 12 cesareans in the time it takes to do one normal delivery.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIn government hospitals too, surgical births have increased dramatically,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cTo learn the technique postgraduate students perform cesareans when they are not required.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cC-section delivery is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through incision in the abdomen and the uterus,\u201d Dr Nisar said.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile WHO states that Cesarean rates should not be more than 10 percent of the total deliveries and must be performed in emergency cases, the rates at Kashmir hospitals are as high as 80 percent.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

He said unnecessary Cesarean section delivery is risky to both mother and child.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

For mother, C-section raises the chances of complications such as blood loss, infection or blood clots.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Studies indicate that the chance of maternal mortality is 4-5 times after an elective cesarean than a normal delivery.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

For the newborn, it means delayed breast feeding, lower birth weight, respiratory problems and increased rate of hospitalization.<\/em><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe natural birth is the ideal way and if it was better to deliver through the stomach, nature would have surely made it so,\u201d said Dr Nisar.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
