{"id":36689,"date":"2021-02-14T20:33:48","date_gmt":"2021-02-14T15:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/?p=36689"},"modified":"2021-02-14T20:33:48","modified_gmt":"2021-02-14T15:03:48","slug":"kashmirs-83-doctors-nurses-and-paramedical-staff-refused-covid-19-vaccination-dak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=36689","title":{"rendered":"Kashmir\u2019s 83% Doctors, Nurses and Paramedical Staff Refused COVID-19 Vaccination: DAK"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>\u201cMore than 80 percent of the healthcare workers have turned down the vaccine,\u201d said DAK President and influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan.<\/em><\/strong> <\/h5>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Srinagar<\/strong>: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Friday said most of the doctors, nurses and paramedical staff in Kashmir are opting out of Covid-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOut of 7,000 healthcare workers at Government Medical College Srinagar and its associated hospitals, only 1,167 (16.67 percent) have received the vaccine as on February 09. 5, 833 workers (83.33 percent) have opted out of the vaccine.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSuch a large percentage of medical personnel declining to take the vaccine is a major concern,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a troubling development, especially since healthcare workers are at higher risk of contracting the virus and their sickness would mean disruption of healthcare delivery system.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMedical staff would imperil patients by snubbing Covid-19 shots,\u201d DAK President said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnvaccinated staff have the potential to transmit the disease to patients who are vulnerable to Covid related complications and death.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>He said the most frequent explanation for hesitancy is mistrust and misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other reason for reluctance is that most healthcare workers are young and they feel invincible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Some simply want to wait as they are fearful of being first in line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who have recovered from Covid-19 believe that they don\u2019t need the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVaccine hesitancy in healthcare workers will have implications on vaccine coverage among the population,\u201d Dr Nisar said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe idea of vaccinating healthcare providers first is to help pave way for broader vaccine acceptance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut if they are reluctant for the vaccine, we will be having a huge challenge in convincing the general population to take the vaccine,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVaccine confidence among healthcare workers is vital in promoting public vaccine confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot more to do to get the healthcare workers to take the vaccine.
