{"id":37671,"date":"2021-04-07T17:13:25","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T11:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/?p=37671"},"modified":"2021-04-07T17:13:25","modified_gmt":"2021-04-07T11:43:25","slug":"second-covid-19-wave-could-be-worse-than-first-warns-dak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=37671","title":{"rendered":"Second Covid-19 wave could be worse than first, warns DAK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Srinagar, Apr 07: <\/em><\/strong><em>With Kashmir valley facing second wave of Covid-19, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Wednesday warned that the new wave could be worse than the first.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSecond waves of pandemics have been harsher,\u201d said DAK President and influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[the_ad_placement id=&#8221;w&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe have witnessed in the past how second wave of 1918 Spanish flu pandemic was deadlier than the first one. The first wave occurred in the spring which was relatively mild. A far deadlier second wave erupted in the fall months which infected 500 million and killed 50 million people globally.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCovid-19 is following the same suit,\u201d DAK President said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe second waves of coronavirus in United States and Europe were uniformly worse than the first.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cKashmir is currently under the grip of a second wave and the cases are rising and hospitalizations too,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnd if countermeasures are not put in place, we could end up having a situation which could be worse than what we saw last year.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is because vast majority of people in the valley are still susceptible to the virus and the virus will go where it is given room to run, and will find people who are vulnerable to infection,\u201d Dr Nisar said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPeople have got pandemic fatigue. They are tired of restrictions, wearing masks, being away from family and friends, and increasingly fed up with the new normal routines.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey have thrown caution to the wind,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMany people don\u2019t wear masks and don\u2019t care for social distancing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis behavior would facilitate transmission of the virus that could reignite an outbreak,\u201d said Dr Nisar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnother factor that could make the new wave worse is the emergence of new variants.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSome of the variants can make the virus more infectious, deadly, or even resistant to vaccines and treatment,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe should not take much comfort from the fact that so far in the second wave, the incidents of severe cases and deaths are considerably lower than the first spike. The second wave is infecting young people in larger proportion than the first one.
