{"id":39837,"date":"2021-08-28T17:06:19","date_gmt":"2021-08-28T11:36:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/?p=39837"},"modified":"2021-08-28T17:06:19","modified_gmt":"2021-08-28T11:36:19","slug":"two-lecturers-discover-gigantic-fossil-site-near-aharbal-waterfall-in-kulgam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=39837","title":{"rendered":"Two lecturers discover \u2018gigantic fossil site\u2019 near Aharbal waterfall in Kulgam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kulgam, Aug 28:<\/strong> Two lecturers, working in the School Education department Saturday claimed to have discovered a \u201cgigantic fossil site\u201d while scouting for fossil samples near world famous Aharbal waterfall in South Kashmir\u2019s Kulgam district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gumlet-assettype-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/ii\/AW\/s\/gumlet.assettype.com\/greaterkashmir%2F2021-08%2Fec1ff07b-e9ee-47c0-8c49-d35f4e598b15%2FScreenshot__7_.png?format=auto&amp;w=1200\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Fossil Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As per reports available with the news agency\u2014Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the gigantic fossil site was discovered by two lectures namely Manzoor Javaid and Dr Rouf Hamza when they came across a site, which is rich in fossil diversity at specific locations aged between 488- 354 million years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CSR-e2vhrwn\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, the site is located at a distance of about two kilometers from Ahrabal Waterfall in Kulgam district and the site is studded with thousands of fossil remains of diverse nature which got exposed due to weathering, construction of road and subsequent erosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/freepresskashmir-news.cdn.ampproject.org\/ii\/AW\/s\/freepresskashmir.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/99fe15c7-863d-40e2-b4ef-6f7111c0e8c0-1000x600.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Fossil Image<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Rouf Hamza while talking with KNO said that thousands of fossils are visible at the site superficially without any excavation. \u201cThis is an indication that huge haul of fossils could be hidden beneath.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said that if the potential areas of the site are excavated, it may reveal an astonishing fossil world to the scientific community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the fossil samples fall between Ordovician and Devonian period. However, it needs to be ascertained through serious research and Carbon Dating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said that the organisms commonly found during this period belong to Bryozoa (Fenestella, Fenestrillina, Trepestome, Rhombopore), Trilobites, Crinoids, Brachiopods, Corals etc. \u201cHowever, the site needs to be evaluated for other fossil flora and fauna.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rouf claimed that till date, it is presumably the biggest find in J&amp;K in terms of occurrence, area, diversity and age of the fossils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInterestingly most of the fossil sites have been discovered either by the foreigners or by the professionals.
