{"id":48724,"date":"2021-10-16T16:42:25","date_gmt":"2021-10-16T11:12:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/covid-vaccine-for-children-will-help-reopen-schools-dak\/"},"modified":"2021-10-16T16:42:25","modified_gmt":"2021-10-16T11:12:25","slug":"covid-vaccine-for-children-will-help-reopen-schools-dak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=48724","title":{"rendered":"Covid vaccine for children will help reopen schools: DAK"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Srinagar, Oct 16:<\/strong> With the approval of Covaxin for children, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Saturday said the vaccine will pave way for reopening of schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVaccination will play an important role in getting children back to classrooms,\u201d said DAK President and influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said prolonged closure of schools due to Covid-19 has impacted education at all levels. Not only academic learning, school closure has resulted in loss of social and emotional learning which is important for holistic development of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow we have the vaccine that would help children to return to classrooms and ensure safe learning in schools,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DAK President said subject expert committee on Tuesday recommended granting emergency use authorization to Bharat Biotech\u2019s Covaxin for children in the 2-18 years age group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe vaccine has been found to be safe and effective in preventing Covid-19 in children,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe pediatric vaccine can also prevent further waves of Covid-19,\u201d Dr Hassan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said while children mostly get mild illness, they can spread the virus to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is hard to defeat Covid-19 pandemic without vaccinating children,\u201d Dr Nisar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said we won\u2019t be able to achieve herd immunity until children are vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Herd immunity is achieved when most of the population in a community is immune to the disease so that the virus can no longer spread easily from person to person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn order to achieve herd immunity to Covid-19, 80-90 percent people need to be vaccinated.
