{"id":49665,"date":"2021-12-31T11:14:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-31T05:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/met-forecasts-heavy-snowfall-at-some-places-in-jk-on-jan-5-6-may-affect-surface-air-traffic\/"},"modified":"2021-12-31T11:14:00","modified_gmt":"2021-12-31T05:44:00","slug":"met-forecasts-heavy-snowfall-at-some-places-in-jk-on-jan-5-6-may-affect-surface-air-traffic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=49665","title":{"rendered":"MeT Forecasts \u2018Heavy Snowfall\u2019 At Some Places In J&amp;K On Jan 5-6; \u2018May Affect Surface, Air Traffic\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Srinagar, Dec 31: Weatherman on Friday said that \u201cheavy snow\u201d was expected at some place in Jammu and Kashmir during January 5 to 6 and that it may affect road and aerial transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs per today&#8217;s analysis, widespread snow\/rain spell of moderate intensity is most likely during 4-6th January in both J&amp;K and Ladakh with main activity on 5-6th,\u201d a meteorological department official said in a statement to GNS. \u201cHeavy Snow is expected at some places during 5-6th,\u201d he said, adding, \u201c(It) may affect the surface and air transportation.\u201d He said light snow is expected over higher reaches of Kashmir during January 2-3rd. \u201cExpect colder days and warmer nights from January 2nd onwards,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, cold conditions prevailed across J&amp;K and Ladakh even there was slight rise in minimum temperature with Gulmarg recording a low of minus 9.0\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official told GNS that Srinagar, the summer capital of J&amp;K, recorded a low of minus 3.0\u00b0C against previous night\u2019s minus 4.0\u00b0C. Although the temperature was above 1.0\u00b0C than the previous night, it was minus 0.9\u00b0C below normal for this time of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kashmir is presently under the grip of 40-day long harshest period of winter, known locally as \u2018Chillai Kalan, which started from December 21. It is followed by a 20-day long \u2018Chillai Khurd\u2019 and a 10-day-long \u2018Chilla Bachha\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mercury settled at the world famous resort of Gulmarg at minus 9.0\u00b0C against minus 9.6\u00b0C on the previous night, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, had a low of minus 3.0\u00b0C against 4.2\u00b0C on the previous night, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 6.6\u00b0C against minus 8.9\u00b0C on previous night, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.3\u00b0C against minus 3.6\u00b0C on previous night, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 2.6\u00b0C against minus 4.4\u00b0C on the previous night, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jammu, the J&amp;K\u2019s winter capital, saw a drop temperature by 8 notches from the precious night, recording a low of 5.1\u00b0C which is minus 1.5\u00b0C below normal for the place during this time of the year, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ladakh\u2019s Leh had a low of minus 15.0\u00b0C against last night\u2019s minus 16.0\u00b0C while automatic Kargil station recorded a minimum of minus 10.2\u00b0C. Drass in Kargil, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded a low of minus 19.8\u00b0C, the official said.
