Srinagar: <\/strong>Weatherman on Friday issued red alert for heavy-very heavy in Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIMD issues Red Colour (be vigilant) weather warning for J&K for January 7,\u201d an official of the MeT said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, it is snowing at most places of Kashmir and hilly areas of Jammu while raining at a few places of Jammu region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExpect further increase in rain\/snow intensity as the day progresses with main intensity of heavy to Very heavy rain\/snow during 7th (night) and January 8th,\u201d he said in a statement to GNS. \u201cThere would be gradual improvement from January 9th Morning onwards in J&K.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are four types of colour codes signifying the level of caution: green which means no action, yellow\u2014situation to be watched), amber \u2013government agencies need to be prepared for severe weather and red \u2013action needed by the agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MeT Official said the weather system may affect surface and air transportation, mainly on Saturday. \u201cIt may cause avalanche\/landslide in vulnerable spots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MeT office has urged people not to venture in avalanche prone areas, follow traffic advisory seriously as well as maintain proper ventilation of their rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the MeT official told GNS that Srinagar recorded rainfall of 3.1mm in last 24 hours till 0830 hours today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summer capital of J&K, he said, recorded a low of 2.6\u00b0C against previous night\u2019s 0.3\u00b0C. It was 4.5\u00b0C above normal for this time of the year in Srinagar, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kashmir is presently under the grip of 40-day long harshest period of winter, known locally as \u2018Chillai Kalan, which started from December 21. It is followed by a 20-day long \u2018Chillai Khurd\u2019 and a 10-day-long \u2018Chilla Bachha\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gulmarg, recorded a low of minus 5.5\u00b0C against minus 3.4\u00b0C on the previous night at the world famous resort, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qazigund received 4.6mm of rain in the last 24 hours while the gateway town of Kashmir recorded a low of 0.4\u00b0C, same as witnessed on the previous night, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir which had 0.4cms of fresh snowfall recorded a low of minus 0.4\u00b0C against minus 0.8\u00b0C on previous night, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 0.2\u00b0C against minus 0.7\u00b0C on previous night, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kupwara town in north Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 0.8\u00b0C against 0.0\u00b0C as on the previous night, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jammu, with 4.6mm of rain, recorded a low of 11.1\u00b0C, up eight notches from the previous night and normal of 7.3\u00b0C for the J&K\u2019s winter capital during this time of the year, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ladakh\u2019s Leh recorded a low of 1.5\u00b0C against last night\u2019s minus 7.6\u00b0C while Kargil automatic station recorded a minimum of minus 9.8\u00b0C while Drass recorded minus 12.4\u00b0C, the official said. (GNS)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
