{"id":50097,"date":"2022-01-20T21:46:21","date_gmt":"2022-01-20T16:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmir.today\/met-forecasts-widespread-snowfall-may-hit-travel-in-jk-on-weekend\/"},"modified":"2022-01-20T21:46:21","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T16:16:21","slug":"met-forecasts-widespread-snowfall-may-hit-travel-in-jk-on-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmir.watch\/?p=50097","title":{"rendered":"MeT Forecasts \u2018Widespread\u2019 Snowfall, May Hit Travel In J&amp;K On Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Srinagar, Jan 20: \u00a0Weatherman on Thursday revised its earlier forecast by now predicting widespread moderate rain and snow during 22 to 23rd January in Jammu and Kashmir. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn Active Western Disturbance is Most likely to cause Widespread Moderate Rain\/Snow in J&amp;K during 22-23rd Jan,\u201d an official of the meteorological department here told GNS, adding, that the weather system may temporary cause disruptions in surface and air transportation. \u201c(Probability of Occurrence as of today is 75%),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Light rains lashed plains in Jammu and Kashmir while upper reaches including Gulmarg received fresh snowfall, officials said on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar received 2.9mm rain in last 24 hours till 0830 hours today while the summer capital of the J&amp;K recorded a low of 2.2\u00b0C against last night\u2019s 2.7\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kashmir is presently under the grip of 40-day long harshest period of winter, known locally as \u2018Chillai Kalan, which started from December 21. It is followed by a 20-day long \u2018Chillai Khurd\u2019 and a 10-day-long \u2018Chilla Bachha\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gulmarg had about 8cms of fresh snowfall during the time and recorded a low of minus 5.0\u00b0C against minus 6.0\u00b0C on previous night, he said. The temperature was 2.7\u00b0C above normal for this time of the year in the famous resort in north Kashmir\u2019s Baramulla district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, had 4cms of snowfall and recorded a low of minus 0.6\u00b0C against minus 1.9\u00b0C last night, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, had 2mm of rainfall and recorded a low of 0.7\u00b0C against 1.3\u00b0C on the previous night, he said.<br \/>Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, also had 1.6mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of minus 0.1\u00b0C against 0.2\u00b0C on the previous night, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kupwara town in north Kashmir received 3.4mm of rainfall during the time while as it recorded a low of 1.2\u00b0C , same as on the previous night, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jammu, received 5.1mm of rains and &nbsp;recorded a low of 8.5\u00b0C against previous night\u2019s 9.1\u00b0C which is 1.4\u00b0C above normal for the J&amp;K\u2019s winter capital during this time of the year, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Banihal recorded a low of 1.4\u00b0C, Katra 7.5\u00b0C and Bhaderwah saw a minimum of 1.6\u00b0C, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ladakh\u2019s Leh recorded a low of minus 9.0\u00b0C against last night\u2019s minus 11.4\u00b0C while mercury at automatic station in Kargil settled at minus 15.0\u00b0C. Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded a low of minus 15.9\u00b0C against last night\u2019s minus 19.2\u00b0C, official said.
