  • Fresh WD Approaching J&K

    SRINAGAR – A fresh western dis­turbance is likely to hit Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, even as nights have become more chilly following drop in the minimum temperature due to open sky in the Valley. People continued to shiver despite some improvement in the minimum temperature in Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh, where ma­jority river bodies remained frozen.

    A Met department spokesman said here on Tuesday that weather will remain during the next 24 hours in the UT of J&K and Ladakh. How­ever, he said a fresh WD is likely to hit the region on December 19 which could result in isolated light rain or snow in the region.

    Srinagar, summer capital of UT of Jammu and Kashmir, was two degree colder than yes­terday while famed health resort of Pahalgam was coldest at minus 12.2 degree.

    He said again yesterday’s minimum tem­perature of minus 1.6 degree, it witnessed major drop and settled at minus 3.7 degree, 2.2 notches below normal in Srinagar. Despite sunny day yesterday, the maximum tempera­ture in the city was 7.9 degree, two degree be­low normal in Srinagar, he said.

    After witnessing yet another chilly night, sun was again out today in the city though the intensity of the heat was low due to icy cold winds.

  • Will restore broadband Internet in phases: J&K DGP

    Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh on Saturday said that the J&K administration is mulling to restore the broadband internet service in Kashmir region in a phased manner.

    “Broadband internet service is very much functional in Jammu province and now that situation has improved in the Valley as well. We’re planning to restore this service in Kashmir region in a phased manner,” the DGP told reporters after inaugurating a women and child-friendly police station here.

    DGP Singh, however, refused to share details about when the detained Kashmiri leaders would be released. “As of now, I don’t think it is relevant to answer this question. But as and when it happens we’ll share inputs with media,” the DGP said.

    He said, “In the past 4-5 months, J&K Police and other security forces did a commendable job. Security personnel played a pivotal role in restoring normalcy in Kashmir region.”

    The DGP said, “General public in Kashmir also cooperated despite seeing killings, violence at the hands of militants and facing life threats. Our police force tried its level best to allay the fear in the minds of people. We acted sternly against the militants and various other modules working in Kashmir to instill a sense of panic among the people.”

    “During the process, we busted various such modules, arrested the militants and killed 19 of them,” DGP, Dilbag Singh said, adding, “And our fight against militancy will go on as our priority is to make J&K UT militancy free.” On preparations along the International Border and Line of Control the DGP said, “A tight security grid has been put in place to check the attempts being made to send militants to this side. And this security grid will be strengthened further.”

  • PSA on Farooq Abdullah extended by three months

    The PSA was slapped on Abdullah, who continues to be in detention at his Gupkar residence here in Srinagar, which has been declared as sub-jail, on September 17.

    Besides, thirty five mainstream politicians who were earlier detained in the Centaur hotel on the banks of the Dal lake, were recently moved to the MLA’s hostel.

    Women from Kashmir to Kanyakumari has hurt by his statement which is irreparable too on the status of women of India.

    She added that Women issue should be a concern for one and all but the leader of congress is doing politics on the women issues and it is a matter of shame that son of Gandhi family speaks forgetting the dignity of women .

    She added that the person who was dreaming to be PM of country doesn’t not know how to respect the women of country and not only women are hurt ,his remarks indicates that all men are rapists in country which is not true.

    The mistake done by few in country doesn’t not reflect all are bad.

    Where from the congress leader Rahul Gandhi has done his education as he doesn’t care and respect for the women of India.

    She added that even this is the first time in history of politics too that any politician has insulted women in all and done a clarion call to rape in India.

    Priya Sethi bluntly said that he should apology to country and politicians like Rahul Gandhi had “no moral right” to be in Parliament and he should resign as Member Parliament.

    Unethical words,desperation and obsessed by the Modi Ji’s idea of make in india,the leader of congress has insulted the women as well as country.

    She said “Make in India” programme was aimed at providing employment to youth but people like Rahul Gandhi for his political gains is using the words which has insulted every daughter,mother sister of this country .

    She added that the congress leader is using crimes against women as a political tool.

    Priya said that the congress party which is headed by the lady and the country is now waiting for the action from Sonia Gandhi on the remarks of her Party MP and Son.

  • After snow, Kashmir faces power outages

    After fresh snowfall in the Valley on Friday, which blocked roads and air traffic, the whole region witnessed power cuts more than usual as the wires faced faults at many places due to inclement weather conditions.

    In Srinagar, where more than six inches of snow had gathered, most areas were without electricity till late afternoon. In some areas, residents said while the electricity supply was briefly restored, there were frequent cuts.

    “The electricity supply was affected briefly and has been restored in most of the places,” an official said.

    After the onset of harsh winters, the electricity supply has been impacted in the Valley as there has been an addition to the outages schedule. The residents have been complaining that there are unscheduled power cuts.

    “Since morning there has been no electricity and in the cold it is very difficult to manage without power,” said Subaya Shameem, a resident of North Kashmir’s Baramulla.

    During the season’s first snowfall in the first week of November, the electricity supply was affected for more than five days and commercial hub Lal Chowk in Srinagar reeled under the darkness for three days. The residents have been expressing their outrage as the demand of electricity increases in the harsh winters.

    “The government is not doing anything to provide uninterrupted electricity supply to people like it is being provided in other places. No initiative has been taken and it is making the residents suffer,” said Nazir Ahmad, a resident of Pulwama.

    Officials said the areas where there had been faults in the transformers and wires due to snowfall, the supplies would be restored soon.

  • Kashmir Receives Fresh Snowfall; Flights Cancelled, Highway Closed

    SRINAGAR – Heavy snowfall forced closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and suspension of air traffic to Kashmir on Friday, officials said.

    The snowfall, which began in the early hours of the day, resulted in accumulation of snow on both sides of the Jawahar Tunnel on the highway, a traffic department official said.

    Ending speculation, the Government of India has made it clear that it would not bring any legislation on the lines of Article 371 in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir for protection of land and property.

    If the residents want such safeguards, they will have to wait for the constitution of the next Legislative Assembly vested with the powers to make laws, said Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy. He was responding to a query by PDP Rajya Sabha member Nazir Ahmed Laway.

    Various groups and political parties in the UT, which lost its special status on August 5 when the Centre abrogated Articles 370 and 35-A, have been seeking safeguards to protect their land and jobs.

    The BJP unit of Jammu and Kashmir has suggested domicile certificates to locals for protection of land rights. (Reported The Tribune)

  • Sikhs in Kashmir agree to demolish gurdwara to make way for national highway

    Srinagar: In a welcome gesture from the Sikh community, Gurdwara Damdama Sahib, established in 1947 and located along the Srinagar-Baramulla road, is going to be shifted to facilitate the construction of National Highway following an agreement on Thursday between the gurdwara management and the deputy commissioner, Srinagar.

    The gurdwara served migrant families from Pakistan and remained a place to halt not only for the Sikhs but people of all faiths.

    It organised langars (community kitchens) and social service initiatives. It also sheltered flood and earthquake victims.

    In 2006, the government started construction of National Highway from Srinagar to Baramulla. Several utilities/structures remained bottlenecks under the highway alignment.

    The Srinagar-Baramulla stretch is executed by the Border Roads Organisation while Anantnag-Srinagar part is done by the NHAI.

    The road was completed in 2013. However, due to litigation in the High Court, four bottlenecks remained.

    These included the gurdwara, a power line, a petrol filling station and water supply lines. A land owner whose land was proposed for relocation of gurdwara objected to it and obtained a stay in 2014. Ever since then the land owner, the gurdwara committee, collector land acquisition and the government have been locked in litigation.

    Finally on Thursday, the gurdwara started making way for construction of the National Highway after successful talks between the gurdwara management and Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary.

    After a series of meetings during the last one week and examining a host of options to resolve the issue, both sides arrived at an agreement. This included alternate land and reconstruction of the gurdwara at a nearby land finalised by the deputy commissioner in consultation with the Sikh community.

    It was more of the strategic resolution than compensation. The community elders and the management of gurdwara Damdama Sahib agreed to the offer of the deputy commissioner.

    On Thursday, in the presence of the deputy commissioner and gurdwara management members, the demolition of the gurdwara began.

    The gurdwara will now function from a makeshift space till a new gurdwara is reconstructed at the agreed location. The state PWD has been entrusted with construction of the gurdwara as per the design provided by the Sikh Sangat.

    The gesture of the Sikh community here has made history in Kashmir.

    The administrative outreach of DC Srinagar to resolve the 13-year-long complex issue is an example of proactive approach for efficient resolution aimed at public welfare. — IANS

  • SMS restored partially in Kashmir

    SMS service messages, including ‘one time passwords’ (OTPs), resumed on Tuesday for 40 lakh subscribers in Kashmir following several requests from the public, particularly the business community, officials here said.

    Though the Jammu and Kashmir administration allowed service providers to resume machine-based messages, subscribers will not be allowed to send any messages from their mobiles, the officials said.

    The resumption of service messages will help the general public, especially business-persons, receive service messages from banks, they said.

    Phones fell silent on August 5, when the Centre revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and re-organised the erstwhile State into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

    Post-paid mobile phones in Kashmir buzzed back to life after a gap of 72 days on October 14, but SMS facilities were stopped within a few hours after the security agencies claimed militants were using SMS services to mobilse people.

    Over 25 lakh prepaid mobile phones and internet services, including WhatsApp, remain deactivated for now, the officials said.

    On August 17, partial fixed line telephony resumed in the Valley. On September 4, nearly 50,000 landlines were declared operational.

    In Jammu, communication was restored within days of the blockade and mobile internet restarted around mid-August. However, after its alleged misuse, internet facility on cell phones was snapped on August 18.
