  • Bedtime blood pressure medication prevents heart attacks, strokes: DAK

“If you take your blood pressure pill at bedtime, you have less chances of getting a heart attack or stroke,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

Srinagar, May 17: On World Hypertension Day, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Thursday said taking blood pressure lowering medication at bedtime prevents heart attacks and strokes.
“If you take your blood pressure pill at bedtime, you have less chances of getting a heart attack or stroke,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.
Quoting a study, Dr Nisar said patients who took blood pressure pills at bedtime were one-third less likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke than those who took pills in the morning.
“Blood pressure shows a 24-hour rhythm, higher during the day and lower during nighttime. However, people with high blood pressure do not exhibit this nighttime dip. This non-dipping increase the risk of heart attack and stroke,” he said.
“Sleep-time blood pressure is best reduced when medication is taken at bedtime,” he added.
“Based on the study, it is time to reconsider the timing of your blood pressure medication,” Dr Nisar said.
“If you are taking only one pill, take it at nighttime. If you are taking more than one drug, then taking one of them at night before bed makes sense,” he said.
Dr Nisar said high blood pressure, also called hypertension is a silent killer and a modern epidemic and is the most important cause of preventable death.
“Many people don’t know they have high blood pressure. There are no symptoms and some people only find out after they suffer a heart attack or stroke,” he said.
“One of the problems is that less than half the people with hypertension have had their blood pressure measured and their condition diagnosed. Of those who have been diagnosed, less than half are treated – so this is an enormous health issue,” said Dr Nisar.
“Every year on May 17, World Hypertension Day is observed to raise awareness about high blood pressure among people and to encourage them to prevent and control this silent killer,” he said.

  • Aamir included in World Cup squad after Pakistan bowlers’ thrashing in England

Experienced left-arm pacer Mohammad Aamir was Thursday included in Pakistan’s World Cup squad after their bowlers were taken to the cleaners by England recently.

The thrashing by English batsmen in a T20 International and two ODIs has alarmed the selectors, who were initially not keen on picking Aamir for the showpiece owing to lack of form.

Though Aamir is suspected to be suffering from chicken pox and is to have a medical examination done in London, a reliable source told PTI that the team management, including captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and head coach Mickey Arthur, expressed confidence in the bowler and allowed him time to recover.

“The chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq is also in agreement with the team management but he wants to first be sure Aamir can be fit by the time the World Cup starts from May 30,” the source said.

He said the team management and chief selector are now awaiting the medical report of Aamir who was sent to London to stay with his in-laws after it first emerged he might have contracted chicken pox.

“If the cricket board confirms that Aamir can make a recovery in two weeks time, the management and chief selector will want him in the World Cup squad,” the source said.

The lacklustre performance of the bowlers in the matches against England forced the team management to go back to Aamir, who was not part of the 15-man squad named initially.

“They are also keeping a close look at Asif Ali who has scored two successive half-centuries in the ODIs and if he continues his form he might well be included in the World Cup squad but at whose cost this has to be decided,” he added.

  • Why West Bengal is not declared a disturbed territory: Geelani to PM Modi

Srinagar, May 16: Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani Thursday lashed out at Prime Minister Narender Modi for his ‘fresh bid’ to befool the Indian electorate on the one hand by describing the situation in West Bengal more volatile than that of Jammu and Kashmir and adding salt to the wounds of the people of Kashmir, on the other, by giving “Thrusted graveyard silence” the beautiful name of “peace”.

Geelani in a statement issued to KNO asked Prime Minister why West Bengal is not declared a disturbed territory? Why it is not handed over to Indian military? Why POTA, AFSPA, PSA, ULA like draconian laws are not implemented and people of Bengal (God save them) get killed, maimed, incarcerated and the like as happens in Jammu and Kashmir as an in-alienated part of their miserable life.

Expressing his unwillingness to plead normalcy or fair situation in West Bengal, Geelani asked Indian intellectuals and people of conscience like Arun Dati Roy, Gotum Nawlakha, Tapan Bose etc along with the UNHRC, ICRC and Amnesty International to ascertain the grave violation of human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir and prevail upon Indian leadership not to hoodwink its people nor the international community by falsely proving Kashmir as a safe haven for human life.

Castigating Indian leadership for their inhuman approach and behavour meted out with the subjugated people of Kashmir, pro-freedom leader strongly condemned the adoption of military might to contain the thrusted “grave-yard” silence in the nook and corner of the state.

Blaming India, suffering from arrogance of military might and unleashing a reign of terror by frequently using all methods of oppression and repression, be it unabated killings, tarnishing the chastity of women as a war weapon, beating and incarcerating on flimsy grounds or political vendetta, Geelani proposed India to shun arrogance and desist comparing Jammu and Kashmir with any part of India which might have wider range of political consequences.

Reiterating Kashmir as an international issue brought forth by India on the tables of UN, Geelani also advised India not to play politics on this sensitive issue for its petty electoral gains.

Condemning the proposed ban on the student community of Jammu and Kashmir to get admission in educational institutions of Azad Kashmir, Geelani said although All Parties Hurriyat Conference is not in favour of any such temporary arrangements like potato and onion trade until final and permanent resolution of Kashmir dispute yet as a matter of right as declared by United Nations Human Rights charter where right to education has been accepted as a basic right.

Giving details of the ordeal faced by our student community in all the educational institutions of India at the hands of religious extremists, he said that it is a high risk for our student fraternity to get education in any part of India where they feel vulnerable to any untoward incident at any time.

Expressing his grave concern on the narrowing down the sphere of life in a cage like territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Geelani also castigated the Indian leadership for trampling the basic human rights such as right to get education, medical treatment, business, tourism and even right to perform religious obligation like Hajj by denying passport for the same purpose. He demanded an early intervention by United Nation Organizations to help resolve the sensitive Kashmir issue in the larger interests of the peace and progress of the whole South Asia.(KNO)

  • Mutton @ 420 or 440, flip-flop continues

Govt, Livestock suppliers at loggerheads as people suffer in fasting month

Srinagar, May 16: Mutton suppliers also known as commission agents who supply mutton to Valley-based dealers from outside mandis have suspended trade after government declined their demand of fixing prices of mutton at Rs 480 per kilogram, reliable sources told KNO.

As per mutton suppliers delivery of sheep from mandis in Delhi, Rajashtan and Punjab has been stopped since last few days by the commission agents after authorities informed them that existing prices of mutton in retail markets of the Valley can be hiked to only Rs 430-Rs 440.

“We cannot afford to continue our trade with such low prices so we have decided to stop purchase of sheep meant for supply to the Valley from outside mandis. We have told the authorities to hike the prices as we cannot continue making bulk purchases with such low retail market returns,” a commission agent told KNO.

Meanwhile, several commission agents who do purchase and sale of sheep for Valley on Thursday held meetings with officials in the divisional administration to find a middle path, said a trader. Government has been planning to increase prices of mutton in the retail market soon. Commenting on the suspension of trade by commission agents, a mutton dealer said “stocks of meat in the Valley are sufficient at the moment to last for several days”.

A senior official, wishing anonymity, told KNO said prices of mutton are likely to be increased from existing Rs 420 per kilogram to Rs 440 per kg which has been opposed by the commission agents. The government had recently increased prices of chicken by Rs 30 making it cost Rs 150 per kg.

He said the meeting between mutton dealers association and officials of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) was held on Saturday. “However, the final decision on the price hike can be only taken in a meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner who heads the price fixation committee,” the official said.

Meanwhile, CAPD on Friday notified the rate list for vegetables to be sold across the Valley. Director CAPD, Muhammad Qasim Wani said prices of mutton have stablised after having been skyrocketing recently as government has intensified market checking, he said.

“From Rs 550 per kg, the prices of mutton have stabilized and consumers are purchasing this commodity at a much affordable price. We hope the deliberations on the price review of mutton come to a conclusive end so that a fixed price for mutton is decided soon,” Wani said.(KNO)
