  • Women Councillor accuses mayor of sexual harassment, he hits back

Mattu claims woman sought favours: job for son, shop for husband

Srinagar: The allegations of sexual harassment by a councillor against Srinagar mayor Junaid Azim Mattu have snowballed into a controversy as the latter has now levelled counter-allegations at the woman.

A day ago, Shaheena Altaf, a councillor from Srinagar’s Raj Bagh, accused Mattu of “harassment” and registered a complaint with the police. On Tuesday, both Mattu and the councillor levelled charges against each other by holding press conferences.

The mayor has demanded the disqualification of the councillor from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. He said he had sent a letter to the Governor with signatures from a majority of corporators. “Whenever I went to his office, he would tell me to come with him. He would touch my hands and arms. He would come to the office drunk. We do not feel safe. We made him the mayor. We voted for him. He cannot get away with this,” Shaheena said. “He has no answers that’s why he is alleging that I asked for a shop for my husband. He is seeking support from the BJP using his influence,” she added. Mattu, however, refuted the allegations and dared the councillor to prove a single allegation.“She is of my mother’s age. We won’t resume work till she is disqualified from the corporation. I dare her to prove a single allegation against me. My only mistake is that I didn’t allow corruption in the Municipal Corporation. She was asking for a job for her son and a shop for her husband,” Mattu said. Meanwhile, employees of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation protested on Tuesday and accused Shaheena of vandalising the office and manhandling one of the officials.

The police said they were investigating the allegations. The mayor and councillor have filed complaints but no case has been registered as yet.Councillor accuses mayor of sexual harassment, he hits back

  • Junaid Mattu trying to be city father but he is a mental patient, alleges Imran Sheikh

After sexual harassment allegations, Mayor lands up in another mess

Jammu: A day after woman counselor accused Srinagar Mayor Junaid Mattu of sexual harassment, Deputy Mayor of SMC Sheikh Imran on Tuesday released audio clips on various social media platforms leveling allegations of corruption against Mattu.
In his audio clips, Sheikh Imran said that the Mayor is trying to be “father of the city but he is a mental patient and needs mental check up as he has lost his mental balance.”
Imran also termed him a “middle man” of BJP and PM Modi. “He (Mattu) is threatening the corporators and other persons by misusing the name of Narendra Modi and Ram Madhav. He is working on the diktats of of BJP”, said Imran in his audio clip. Imran alleged that the Mayor is promoting Illegal transfer through pick and choose method and corruption has become rampant. “He (Mayor) is interfering in the matters which don’t fall in his domain.” Imran is heard requesting the investigation agencies (CBI and Vigilance) to investigate the corruption case s. He is also heard urging BJP leadership to rein in Mattu.
Its in place to mention here that the on December 31 (Monday) when people across the globe were busy with new year celebrations after the councilor Shaheena lodged a complaint of sexual harassment against the Mayor. She accused the Mayor and his Personal Assistant (PA) of harassing her and even going to the extent that her Pheran was tore apart by Mattu and his PA in his office chamber.
On the other side the Mayor said that he was not in the office on Monday and was busy in a meeting with the officers of SMC at his residence at Church Lane here. He said that the female councilor is of the age of his mother and it does not befit her to level such dirty allegations. Mattu said that Shaheena wanted him to allot a shop to her husband adding that same is being done at the behest of Deputy Mayor.
A war of words today broke out between the two on Monday and the same continued today with both talking to media persons in this regard. Mattu addressed the media at his residence with the female councilor addressing the press conference at the press club here.
It would be in place to mention here that BJP supported Mattu to become Mayor of Srinagar while as Imran assumed the chair of Deputy Mayor with the support of Congress. While Mattu has been accused of switching over to different sides, Imran is a bank defaulter since he owes 125 crores to Jammu & Kashmir Bank on account of loan borrowed by him.
The female councilor said that she has been harassed by the Mayor and his coterie not once but on many occasions. She alleged that her estimate of 25 lakhs for carrying out development works in her ward was concealed by the Mayor. She said that Mattu made it clear to her that the estimate would be cleared once she accepts the ‘sexual’ offer.
The councilor alleged that the Mayor and his PA manhandled and abused her in presence of many other councilors today saying that her pheran was torn apart. She alleged that Mattu hurled choicest of invectives on her despite the fact that many of her colleagues were present there.
The councilor said that she has approached many higher ups in the police department and has requested for lodging a First Information Report (FIR) against him. She has demanded that stern action under rules should be taken against the Mayor and his PA. She has threatened to come on road along with other councilors in case no action is taken.
However, Mattu said that the accusations leveled by the female councilor are baseless, concocted and motivated. He said the councilor is the age of his mother and has children as old as him. He said that the councilor made the accusations at the behest of Deputy Mayor. “I didn’t attend office and was chairing a review meeting of the Works Wing of the SMC at my residence at Church Lane, Srinagar. At the end of the meeting, I received a call from my Private Secretary (an employee of the SMC) that the said Corporator has barged into my office – physically assaulted the Private Secretary, Mr. Hussain and broke the computers and fixtures in the office demanding that a shop be allotted in favor of her husband in Srinagar and a job be arranged for a said person who she claims to be her son,” said Mattu.

  • India Never Opposed Dialogue with Pakistan: PM Modi

In his first major interview nearly 100 days ahead of general elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on a range of topics—from the Ram Mandir issue to Pakistan, surgical strikes and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that India, irrespective of the government, has never opposed dialogue with Pakistan, but talks and terrorism cannot go hand-in-hand.

“India, whether UPA or NDA government, never opposed dialogue (with Pakistan). It is the consistent policy of the country, not Modi government or Manmohan Singh government. We only say one thing that amid the noise of bombs and guns, the dialogue cannot be heard. Cross-border terrorism must end. And we are persistently maintaining pressure on this,” said PM Modi in an exclusive interview to news agency ANI broadcast by various TV channels.

PM Modi said India will make all efforts to keep the pressure on Pakistan, but it will be a huge mistake to believe that the country will mend its ways anytime soon.

The prime minister said that whether it is surgical strikes or action at other levels, the Indian government is working out various strategies to keep up the pressure on Pakistan to check terrorism.

PM Modi said that while India favours dialogue and good friendly relations with Pakistan, it is also wary of the fact that the neighbouring country is not going to mend it ways of promoting cross-border terrorism any time soon.

When asked why cross border attacks have not stopped after the surgical strikes PM Modi replied, “Whatever strategy is to be adopted, how to do, is ongoing at appropriate levels, has been happening. 1965 war, war during partition…Ek ladai se Pakistan sudhar jayega, yeh sochne mein bahut badi galti hogi. Pakistan ko sudharne mein abhi aur samay lagega. It will be a huge mistake to believe that Pakistan will mend its ways after a war. It will take a lot of time for Pakistan to mend its ways.

He added that India has created an environment that Pakistan stands isolated in the world.

On a question, whether he will go to Pakistan if invited by his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan, Prime Minister said: “We will cross the bridge when we reach there.”

On his government’s foreign policy with regard to China, Prime Minister said India should be judged on the basis of what it did in Doklam. He asserted that nothing has happened with India since then that can be considered as deceit.

During the course of the interview, he spoke on various issues—ranging from RBI governor Urjit Patel’s resignation to demonetisation and a mahagatbandhan, or Grand Alliance, of opposition parties against the BJP and its NDA allies in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

    Edited excerpts:

    On Surgical Strike

“I gave clear orders that whether you succeed or fail, don’t think about that and come back before sunrise. Don’t fall for the lure and prolong it (the operation),” the Prime Minister said.

The surgical strikes were carried out 10 days after the deadly Uri attack that killed 19 Indian soldiers on 18 September 2016.

Modi said that he was anxious throughout the operation as the safety and security of Indian soldiers were paramount to him. “I knew it was a big risk… The biggest consideration for me was the safety of our soldiers.”

“An Army officer informed India of the operation and the same information was passed on to Pakistan as well… But it is unfortunate for the country that the same day, leaders of some parties raised doubts over the surgical strikes. It was expected of Pakistan to deny it to keep their morale intact. But what Pakistan was saying, was being said here too. To lend weight to their views, they were citing the Pakistani version. Politicisation started from that point,” Modi said.

    On the Ayodhya dispute

On demands from Hindutava organisations, including the RSS, for a government ordinance to allow construction of a Ram temple, Modi said,”Let the judicial process take its own course. Don’t weigh it in political terms. Let the judicial process be over. After the judicial process is over, whatever be our responsibility as government, we are ready to make all efforts.”

Judicial process was being slowed down because Congress lawyers were creating “obstacles” in the Supreme Court. A solution would be found to this issue under the ambit of the Constitution

    On RBI governor Urjit Patel

He himself requested (to resign) on personal reasons. I am revealing for the first time, he was telling me about it (the resignation) for the past 6-7 months. He gave it even in writing. No question of political pressure. He did a good job as RBI governor.

    On the Congress

It is a fact that those considered first family, who ran the country for four generations, are out on bail, that too for financial irregularities. It is a big thing. A set of people, who are at their service, are trying to suppress such information and push other narratives.

Even Congress people say Congress is a thought, a culture. When I say Congress-mukt, I want to rid the country from this culture and this sort of thinking. And I say that Congress too needs to be mukt of this Congress culture.

    On demonetisation

The demonetisation wasn’t a jhatka (jolt). We had warned people a year before, that if you have such wealth (black money), you can deposit it, pay penalties and you will be helped out. However, they thought Modi too would behave like others so very few came forward voluntarily.

    On 2019 Lok Sabha elections

It is going to be Janta versus Gathbandhan. Modi is just a manifestation of public love and blessings (read more).

    On Triple Talaq bill

The triple talaq ordinance was brought after the Supreme Court verdict. We have said in our BJP manifesto that a solution would be found to this issue under the Constitution. Most Islamic countries have banned triple talaq. So, it is not a matter of religion or faith. Even in Pakistan, triple talaq is banned. So it is an issue of gender equality, matter of social justice. It is not an issue of faith. So keep the two separate.

    On Sabarimala

India is of one opinion that everyone should get justice. There are some temples, which have their own traditions, where men can’t go. And men don’t go… In this, Sabarimala, a woman judge in the Supreme Court has made certain observations. It needs to be read minutely. There is no need to attribute those to any political party. As a woman, she has made some suggestions. There should be a debate on that as well sometimes.

    On Ayushman Bharat

The poor are (being) given insurance of up to ₹5 lakh under Ayushman Bharat Yojana. A large of people were suffering (for want of healthcare), today they have got treatment. How can I consider this a failure?

On BJP’s loss in Assembly Elections 2018

In Telangana and Mizoram, nobody gave the BJP any chance. In Chhattisgarh, a clear mandate was given, the BJP lost. But in two states (Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh), there was a hung assembly. Secondly,15 years of anti-incumbency was being fought by our people. We are discussing what was lacking.

On Rahul Gandhi calling GST ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’

The way someone thinks is the way someone talks. Have GST processes not been done taking a consensus with all political parties in the country? The GST process had started when Pranab Mukherjee was the finance minister. The government is in favour of bringing construction related material in 5% GST slab.

    On India’s middle class

For the middle class, we will have to change our thinking. The middle class never lives on someone’s mercy. They live with dignity and make immense contribution towards running the country.

    On Congress farm loan waivers

To say a lie and mislead, that is what I call a lollipop. Like saying “we have waived all farm loans”. The truth is that nothing like that has happened. Please see their (Congress’s) own circulars, they should not mislead.

    On NDA allies

In 2014, we got full majority, but we adhered to the coalition dharma. We took everyone together. Even today when we run the government, there is consensus in decision-making. Our allies wish to grow and we too want them to grow. We do not want that we should grow at cost of allies.

    On the Congress allies

The Congress game is different. It is a speciality of Congress-led alliance that allies are those who have come out of Congress after raising their voice against the Congress or emerged because of Congress opposition. So when they approach the Congress, Congress usurps them.

    On his tenure as PM

I leave it to people to decide whether satisfied or not with my work. But one thing, I am not surprised, I could neither make the Lutyen’s world part of me or me a part of them.

    On Doklam standoff

India should be judged on the basis of its response in Doklam. And nothing has happened with India that can be considered as deceit, but our principled position has been that we want friendly relations with neighbours.

    On Christian Michel’s extradition

If a Congress worker turns up to be Christian Michel’s lawyer, then it is worrying. People should be proud a razdaar has come, now there will be legal inquiry and the truth will come out. Instead of that, you are sending lawyers from your party to support Michel.

Rhetoric Galore, Modiji’s Interview Looks Like A Parody: Cong

In his reaction to Modi’s interview, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala termed it as, “bereft of ground reality, ‘Jumlas’ (rhetoric) galore, Modiji’s interview looks like a parody”.

“Nation suffers – DeMo, Gabbar Singh Tax (GST), bank frauds, black money, Rs 15 lakh in every account, corruption in Rafale deal, price rise, national security imperilled, farm distress, and ‘acche din’,” he said.

Congress leader Anand Sharma alleged that it was a “fixed interview”.

In his counter-offensive, BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli said, “It is a comprehensive, detailed and candid interview in which the PM has spoken on a wide range of issues that have been in the media space for some time. This interview completely demolishes the motivated agenda of opposition parties and vested interests that seek to malign the sterling performance of his government.”

Echoing similar sentiments, another BJP spokesperson, Shahnawaz Hussain, said,”All the false narratives that the opposition was trying to build for many months were demolished by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in just one interview. That’s the power of truth and commitment.”

With Modi indicating that his government is not considering an ordinance to pave the way for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya as long as the matter is in court, BJP ally JD(U) said it feels vindication as it has always maintained that the contentious issue can be resolved either through a judicial process or a consensus among different groups.

“We welcome the prime minister’s comments. It is a victory of our party’s ideology,” JD(U) spokesperson K C Tyagi said.

Junaid said that he had the support of more than 40 of the corporators of the municipal corporation and have written to Jammu and Kashmir Governor S P Malik seeking disqualification of the woman corporator for leveling “false allegations”.

Ishfaq responded to home calling appeal of his mother but only dead. He remained active for about 160 days after he went missing on 20th of July. His mother, Rafiqa Banoo was repeatedly appealing him to return back but he didn’t pay any heed to the repeated calls.

Rafiqa said that her family has been devastated by Ishfaq’s decision to join militancy. “I have been moving from pillar to post since the day my son went missing but failed to change his decision despite requesting all militant organisations to allow Ishfaq to return home,” she said.

“I know what I have done for his studies as I took a lot of pains to finance his studies as Ishfaq’s father was also a militant killed before 22 years,” she said.

Ishfaq left home on 20th of July, saying that he has to appear in some examination at Rajouri however “we all got shocked when his photograph while wielding gun went viral on social media,” said one of his close relatives.

He was never arrested by forces before he joined ranks and “we fail to understand why he left a luxurious life and choose a short life,” he said.

Ishfaq a brilliant student was first studying in his own village Koil in Alamdar Public school, after passing 10th with good marks, he opted for Science stream and later completed his BSC from Government Degree College Pulwama, said his friend Rizwan Ahmad, adding that after completing his BSC, he went outside state where from he completed his masters in Business administration.

He completed his MBA in year 2015 and soon after completing his MBA, he got a job in ICCI bank and later resigned after working there for one year and started fruit business, he said, adding that he earned a good amount of money from fruit business with which he was associated till he left home and joined militant ranks.

Whole area got shocked when he joined militant ranks and nobody is aware yet what compelled him to join militant as his family is nowadays a well off family, Rizwan said.

Ishfaq’s father Mohammad Yousuf Wani alias Tahir who was Hizb commander and was considered as mastermind in making IEDs was killed in an encounter along with his two associates on 31st August 1996 in Pingelan village of Pulwama district.

Ishfaq has left behind by mother, step father (Uncle), three brothers and one sister. His elder brother Aijaz Ahmad is working in police department. Nawaz Ahmad Wagay from Reban village who had completed his masters in Urdu subject had joined Al-Badr outfit in a span of less than four days in the last week of June. “He left home after Friday prayers and within hours his photo carrying AK-47 went viral on social media within hours,” one of his relative said.

Nawaz was arrested several times by forces for having contact with militants, his relative added. The mother of Nawaz, Sara Begum said her family has been devastated by Nawaz’s decision to join militancy. Sara said she has been moving from pillar to post since the day her son went missing and announced his joining Al-Badr by releasing a gun-wielding photograph on various social networking sites.

“I am helpless. I took a lot of pains to finance his studies,” she said. The father of Nawaz Ghulam Qadir Wagay was also killed at his native area in year 1996. Nawaz belonged to an economically sound family. Nawaz is survived by mother, three sisters and one brother. Among them, one married and one unmarried sister are government employees.

Liyaqat Muneer Wani was haunted by extra-judicial killing of his father, Muneer Ahmad Wani since early childhood, his family members said. They said Muneer alias Colonel Jameel was former Hizb divisional commander.

“Muneer left the government job as Laboratory Assistant in 1989 to receive arms training in Pakistan. He returned from Pakistan in December 1990,” they said. According to them, Muneer, who was close to Hizb chief Syed Salah-ud-Din, became famous for his guerrilla strategies and remained active for nearly nine years.

He became HM’s divisional commander. They said Muneer was arrested by forces on January 26, 1998. “Four days later, he was killed in a staged encounter few kilometers away from the site where his son was killed today,” the family members said.

Liyaqat was barely two-years-old when his father was killed. He had lost his mother a year before. “When he grew up, Liyaqat often used to talk about his father’s killing. While he was pursuing graduation in Degree College Pulwama, he became politically conscious,” his family members said.

They said his father was his inspiration and he dreamt to wear his father’s shoes. “Liyaqat took active part in 2016 street protests, which erupted after killing of Hizb commander Burhan Wani”.

“His right eye was hit by pellets outside his house in Bellow during clashes and he underwent two surgeries at SMHS hospital,” the family members said, adding that the injury didn’t calm Liyaqat and he attempted to join militant ranks several times but was made to return home by his family.

“Every relative used to counsel him that he should look after his younger brother and forget about joining militant ranks,” they said, adding, “he didn’t listen to us and made umpteen attempts to join HM, a militant group which was headed by his deceased father in Kashmir at one point of time.”

The family members said Hizb refused to recruit him knowing that he was an orphan and had to look after his family. Liyaqat joined militant ranks on March 10 this year after writing his final year examinations. A month later, his results were declared and he had secured 92 % marks in graduation.

“He joined Lashkar-e-Toiba but later switched to HM after his cousin, Rayees Ahmad Wani, a HM militant was killed in March 2017,” they said, adding that Liyaqat was said to be a close associate of slain militant, Manan Wani.

“He called us on phone a day before he was killed saying he would come to home next day,” the family members said.

He was buried next to grave of his slain cousin, Rayees Ahmad Wani who was killed along with his associate Farooq Ahmad Hurrah of Nazimpora in brief shootout in Malangpora area when they were boarding a car.(KNO)
