  • Install CCTVs in schools, colleges to curb student protests: Police

Srinagar: With student protests in colleges and schools refusing to die down in Kashmir, the educational institutions in north Kashmir have been asked to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to check what the police have termed as “interference by outsiders” on the premises during law and order problems. In a recent report, accessed by The Tribune, Baramulla SSP has conveyed to the authorities concerned “that during the ongoing riots by students in various colleges and schools, it has been noticed by the authorities that there were apprehension of interference by outsiders on the premises”.So far, the J&K Government has responded by repeatedly ordering the closure of educational institutions, particularly colleges, as a “precautionary measure” against student protests, which first started from Pulwama College on April 15. Since then the student protests have spread to every nook and corner of the Kashmir valley, with students loosing precious school days.To check the student protests and to curb the menace of interference by outsiders in schools and colleges, the police have recommended the installation of CCTV cameras on school and college premises at the earliest.Taking the matter seriously, the district administration, Baramulla, immediately took up the matter with the authorities concerned in the Education Department and informed the divisional administration as well.Subsequently, as a follow-up action, the Chief Education Officer of Baramulla in a widely disseminated circular dated May 31, 2017, has directed the heads of all the higher secondary institutions to carry out the “necessary action” i.e. to install the CCTV cameras on the premises of the educational institutions in the district.

Jammu June 11: Congress today accused the BJP/PDP Government of stalling development works and taking credit for things done during the previous UPA rule. Senior Congress leader & Secretary Salman Nizami said “UPA gave 5 Medical colleges to J&K, Former Heath Minsiter Ghulam Nabi Azad claimed no credit. PDP/BJP leaders have gone crazy claiming credit for Doda-Kathua medical colleges sanctioned by the UPA govt. He said Nowadays it has become a fashion for BJP-PDP Government to stall development works and take credit for things done during UPA regime. Hitting hard the BJP-PDP Govt for cheating the people of State by just inaugurating various projects across Jammu and Kashmir for gaining the vote bank, Nizami revealed that these projects were initiated at the time of UPA Government. The fact is that the high media publicity to CM’s inaugurations is yet again a blatant attempt at renaming, repackaging and relaunching UPA projects. It has again established the ‘Copy-Paste’ style of governance, ie, nothing original, inaugurating old projects only. He challenged BJP and PDP leaders to identify a single development project which has been sanctioned for Jammu and Kashmir, especially for Chenab region, since PDP and BJP govt came to power in J&K.

  • I love Pakistani TV serials, Indian shows are boring: Paresh Rawal

New Delhi: The strained relationship of India and Pakistan has taken its toll on the entertainment industries of either side of the border as well. While some came out in the support of the self imposed ban on Pakistani artists in India, others aren’t still too certain about its implication.

Bollywood veteran actor Paresh Rawal has expressed his desire to work in Pakistani dramas and lauded how well framed the shows are.

According to Hindustan Times, the Hera Pheri actor said, “Yes, I would love to work in Pakistani films and shows. I love all Pakistani TV serials like Humsafar, the way they act, the story, the writing, the language… it’s all good. I feel our shows are boring.”

Rawal recently made headlines in the news for his controversial comments against author Arundhati Roy where he suggested that she should be tied to an army jeep to discourage stone-pelters in Kashmir.

The 67-year-old actor believes cinema and cricket bring the two countries closer.

“I believe that artists and cricketers don’t come and throw bombs. They are not terrorists, rather they bridge the gap between the two countries. But when the mood is not good why rake up issues at that time? It is better to stay with your country,” he says.

He also asserted that the ban on Pakistani artists should not be have been imposed in the first place.

“There should be no ban on anyone or anything. Even in Hindi Medium there was a Pakistani actress but nothing happened as the mood is good in the country,” he says.

His statement comes after Bollywood diva Vidya Balan praised Saba Qamar’s Bollywood debut, Hindi Medium.

“Watched Hindi Medium today and took your number from Zeenat. Just wanted to tell you that you were amazing in the film. It’s a character one could dislike so easily for being pushy but you humanized her and make her believable and likable! Really, wow!” wrote Vidya.

Another actor, Huma Qureshi, too, confessed that she is open to working in Pakistan if the offer is right. Talking to The Express Tribune, the Gangs of Wasseypur star said, “I would love to work in a Pakistani project, if it’s the right offer.”

  • Army to use ‘through-the-wall’ radars in Valley

Anantnag: Aiming to detect Militants who might be hiding in wall cavities or false ceilings, the Army will now use ‘through-the-wall’ radar imaging during counter-insurgency operations in the Valley.A few such radar systems have already been imported by the Army, official sources said, explaining that the technology would help in more precise and effective anti-military operations. It would enable security forces to get the pinpointed location of terrorists hiding inside homes in congested areas and also avoid civilian casualties. On more than one occasion, the Army and the Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police have had to return without engaging with militants despite specific intelligence inputs.Local informers later conveyed that the terrorists were hiding in a specially created false ceiling or an underground cavity in the same house that had been raided, said a senior officer involved in one such anti-militancy drive. This happened on July 8 last year as well when the security forces gunned down Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. The first time they tried to get him, they couldn’t locate any Militants in the house in a village in south Kashmir’s Kokernag area despite precise intelligence inputs. The Commanding Officer and his men, it is learnt, entered the house twice but were unable to find any Militants who were hiding in a false ceiling. During the third round of searches, the hiding militants gave themselves away when they fired at Army men. It was only after that that the three men, including Burhan Wani, were killed, leading to unrest in the Valley. Often, troops face hostile crowds when they are unable to locate a terrorist at a house notified by human and technically generated intelligence. Though the Army has imported only a few such radars, officials are hopeful that the number will go up once their utility is put to test. — PTI
