  • Kashmirfight blog case: Chargesheet filing process nearing completion

“Strong evidence against accused who are in jail”

Srinagar, Dec 27, KDC: The filing of chargesheet in Kashmir fight blog case is nearing completion as the accused continue to remain in judicial custody while the police has collected “legally strong evidence” against the accused.

Srinagar, Dec 27: The filing of chargesheet in Kashmir fight blog case is nearing completion as the accused continue to remain in judicial custody while the police has collected “legally strong evidence” against the accused.

Police sources told Srinagar based news agency Kashmir Dot Com (KDC) that the chargesheet in the case will be filed within 180 days of the arrest of the accused as evidence has been collected against them.

At present, all the accused continue to be in judicial custody including the former Secretary of SMC Sofi Akbar and his son Tabish Akbar in Central Jail in Srinagar.

“Lot of evidence has been collected against the accused in the case and soon chargesheet will be filed against them in the court,” Police sources said, adding that the “evidence is the same” for the different FIRs that were registered into the case.

According to police FIR number 52/2018 was registered in the Kashmirfight blog case when journalist Syed Sujhaat Bukhari was killed and later police also registered FIR number 82/2020 and 41/2021 at police station Kothibagh of East Srinagar.

A police officer told Kashmir Dot Com that “The case is moving in the right direction with the collection of strong evidence against all the accused including Sofi Akbar, the SMC officer.”

He said cases registered against ‘kashmirfight blog case’ under FIR number 41 of 2021 will be merged with FIR number 82 of 2020 to avoid double jeopardy and will be legally pursued in the court.

Pertinently, Police in July this year arrested five persons identified as Nazish Yasrab Rehmani and Tabish Akbar Rehmani from Sanatnagar, Sofi Muhammad Akbar from Rajbagh, Peerzada Raqif Makhdoomi from Batpora, Hazratbal and Javed Khalid from Poonch for allegedly running an online blog site, which ran smear campaigns and prepared a hit list of prominent personalities in Kashmir.

Later, on September 11 a special court of NIA in Srinagar granted bail to two allegedly accused Nazish Yasrab and Javed Khalid from Poonch and imposed the conditions on them. (KDC)

  • Government Opens Land, Housing In J&K To Every Citizen Of India

J&K Lt Governor Sinha has said a similar event will be held in Srinagar in May next year

Opposition parties have urged the government to focus on job creation rather than investment or selling land, given J&K is facing a massive unemployment crisis

Srinagar: The centre and the J&K administration held a real estate summit in Jammu (the first of its kind) to encourage people from across the country to buy land, or a second home, in Jammu and Kashmir.
Outsiders – those not classified as ‘permanent residents’ – had earlier been barred from purchasing or owning land but this was changed after the centre scrapped Article 370 in August 2019, thereby removing special status for J&K.

Local protesters and regional political parties have accused the centre of “putting J&K up for sale”.

Organised jointly by the Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs and the J&K administration, the Jammu and Kashmir Real Estate Summit (2021) was held today. Officials said 39 MoUs, or Memorandum of Understandings, were signed; 19 dealt with construction of residential homes.

Calling it a “historical transformation in J&K”, the government said it had changed laws to allow external investment in J&K – including the purchase of non-agricultural land.

Lt Governor Sinha has said a similar event will be held in Srinagar in May next year.

“Under the new J&K Development Act, the term ‘being a permanent resident of the State’ as a criteria has been omitted, paving the way for investors outside J&K to invest,” the agenda for today’s conference said.

“As a result, any citizen of India can buy non-agriculture land in J&K,” it said.

Last week the J&K administration, headed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, changed land use laws and allowed re-classifying agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes. The decision triggered strong criticism from regional parties, who said the land would be used to settle non-locals.

Recently the centre told Parliament that only seven plots of land had been purchased in J&K following the scrapping of special status. Allowing people from outside J&K to buy land in the UT was one of the major talking points for the BJP and the centre, but so far that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Opposition parties have urged the government to focus on job creation rather than investment, given J&K is facing a massive unemployment crisis.

According to a recent Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) unemployment survey, J&K’s unemployment rate is over 21 per cent. The all-India average is 7.8 per cent.

Meanwhile, just a few kilometres down the road there were protests against the summit and demands for the restoration of constitutional safeguards and statehood.

“J&K is being put up for sale. They are trying to change our demography, history, identity and culture. We don’t accept any such development which changes the character of J&K. They are auctioning J&K,” Sunil Dimple, President of Mission Statehood J&K, said.

Recently, the J&K administration was forced to suspend its decision to privatise the power sector, including transmission, after 20,000 employees – who alleged government resources were being systematically sold off – went on strike. The Army had to be called in to operate grid stations.

  • Farooq Abdullah hints at fighting elections in J-K together with PAGD allies to defeat communal forces

New Delhi, Dec 26: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, who is the chairperson of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), has hinted his party will fight the next assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir together with the constituents of the new coalition to defeat “communal forces”.

Talking about the situation in Kashmir, Abdullah claimed it is worse than the 90s — when militancy erupted in Jammu and Kashmir — because the youth feel they have no place in modern India and have lost faith in the government in Delhi.

“…and I am sure when the elections come, we’ll sit down together again to defeat the divisive and communal forces,” Abdullah, who has been a Union minister and three-time chief minister of the erstwhile state, told PTI here recently.

The PAGD is a five-party alliance comprising the National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), CPI(M), Awami National Conference and the Peoples Movement. It seeks the restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir which was revoked by the Centre in August 2019.

“What is created is a combination of all parties to fight for the rights and identity of our people – the Dogras, the Kashmiris and others. We recently had a meeting and we all condemned what the delimitation commission has done (based on its preliminary report which recommended six seats for Jammu and one in Kashmir besides reserving nine seats for Scheduled Tribes and seven for Scheduled Castes),” Abdullah said.

Outrightly rejecting the recommendations, he also asked how the government would deal with groups like Kashmiri Pandits and Sikhs who are also demanding political reservation.

“How will people from all sections be there? Who does not take these things into consideration? That is why we had an Upper House where the people who could not come into assembly were brought so that their voices could be heard,” the NC leader said.

Today, every Muslim, whether he belongs to Kashmir or the rest of India, has to “continuously prove” that he is a nationalist despite his community having shed blood for the country, said Abdullah, who was picked by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to be a member of his team to represent India at the United Nations.

“I think the tragedy is that every Muslim, whether he belongs to Kashmir or the rest of India, has to continuously prove that he is a nationalist, that he is an Indian. Why? Why can’t it be done for the others? Why can’t they ask the Hindus, ‘Are you Indians?’ Why only Muslims who have given blood for this nation and are continuously giving blood for this nation, defending this nation at every place,” he asked.

Abdullah said the problem is that people have lost faith. The young feel that they have no place in modern India which has been communalised to the maximum. “They find they have no jobs, we have no industry, the promise of 50,000 jobs, what happened to them,” he asked.

“In JK Bank, they got people from Haryana and Punjab. What about our people from J-K, where will they go? Highly educated population, they see this, they see the arrests made on small flimsy grounds, and they are put under such draconian laws, no one is there to listen, and corruption along with inflation rising sky-high,” Abdullah said.

On the way ahead, the NC leader said, “We can only come out of this if the present government realises that India is a secular nation, follows the Preamble to the Constitution which says everyone is equal, and stops this division of communities … India is more important, and we have to unite communities rather than dividing them if you want to go forward and shine above the rest of the world.” The former chief minister was also highly critical of the J-K administration’s decision to stop the ‘Darbar Move’, an age-old practice under which the civil secretariat – the seat of the government – used to shift its base every six months between the twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu.

On his recent tour of Jammu region, considered a strong base of the BJP, he said this idea that everything is BJP is “wrong” and it is just a media hype.

“As I said before, people see the sufferings they are going through and the promises that they have made. They realised it is not Lord Ram who is in danger and so the Muslims also realised that Allah is not in danger as well.

“Indeed, it is the people who are in danger. They are suffering and they are living hand-to-mouth in some places,” he said.

Reiterating his demand for early assembly elections to restore a popular government in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah said in a democratic setup, people can go and question the MLA as the legislator is always available near them.

“And how dare he not respond! He knows in five years he will disappear if he fails the public,” he added.–(PTI)
