  • Mirwaiz calls for valley-wide strike on Saturday

Srinagar: The chairman of his faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Mirwaiz Umar FarooqWednesday called for valley-wide strike on Saturday against the proposed extension of Tosa Maidan lease.
Addressing a press conference at APHC Headquarters in Rajbagh, the Kashmir’s chief priest said there will be complete shutdown and peaceful protests on Saturday.
He threatened protests if lease is extended. “If this lease is extended, there will be protests.”
The APHC Human Rights Division has compiled a report on Tosa Maidan which reads: “Tosa Maidan was leased to the army in 1964 for setting up an artillery firing range with the 50-year lease. Tosa Maidan’s lease to the Indian army ends on the 18th of April 2014this year. Since 1964, for six months from May to October every year, the meadow sees scenes of simulated warfare carried out by the army. During this period, the villages reverberate with the barrage of shelling and deafening explosions, forcing the villagers to stay indoors most of the time. The human cost of the military exercises is now causing an outcry not only in the affected villages but across the Kashmir Valley.”
The report further reads:  “On 8 September 1992, three children aged 8, 9 and 12 went to the fringes of Tosa Maidan to graze their cattle when they were drawn to an abandoned object. But when they started playing with it, the object exploded, blowing their bodies into smithereens. The army paid no compensation to the family who have been disabled or killed.”
The people of adjoining villages of Tosa Maidan in Central Kashmir have started a massive agitation against the proposed extension of lease. (GNS)

  • Mirwaiz’s letter a big step forward: Mufti

    ‘Common approach to resolution emerging’
Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said a common approach was emerging to the resolution of Kashmir issue which could prove vital to the efforts at ending the 67 year long conflict.
Welcoming the initiative taken by the Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to address the people of India in an open letter published in media, Mufti said it could prove a big step forward which has the potential of being the basis of a major political initiative.

In a brief chat with media here today on the occasion of PDP Lok Sabha candidate Tariq Hameed Karra’s filing of nomination papers Mufti said his party endorses and supports the sentiment and the substance of the Mirwaiz’s letter, which can prove to be a historic document if responded appropriately by the national level leadership.
Mufti said PDP believes that peace and resolution process based on dialogue will have to be inclusive of all political formations, including the Hurriyat. “Our manifesto states that involving Hurriyat will increase the legitimacy of the resolution process and widen its acceptability”, he said.

The PDP patron said that he was very happy to see that the position of the Hurriyat and the proposals that have been made are very similar to that discussed in PDP’s manifesto for the parliamentary elections that was released last month.

Pertinently, in the letter Mirwaiz has suggested that, “The good intentions of your prime ministers aside, we regret that the peace initiatives proved to be too fragile and the process too vulnerable”.  He goes on to say that, “In order to resolve the Kashmir issue, your elected prime ministers need the consistent support of the opposition parties and they also need active support from all of you – the people of India.”

The PDP manifesto, Mufti said also states the same: “All the political and economic initiatives have been led by the leadership at individual level; be it the P V Narasimha Rao’s “sky is the limit for autonomy”, or Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s “insaniyat kay dairay main” or Manmohan Singh’s “making borders irrelevant”. All these well-meaning initiatives need to be institutionalized for them to have an impact on the ground. Unless these approaches, which are broadly similar, get sanctified and authorized by the Parliament, there cannot be any headway as far as the resolution is concerned”.  Indeed, as stated by the Mirwaiz, our manifesto states that “finding a resolution in J&K is not only the Government’s responsibility”.

Mufti said PDP believes that the opposition and other political parties have an equal responsibility and stake in the well-being of J&K.

Meanwhile, Tariq Hameed Karra, the party’s candidate for Srinagar parliamentary constituency filed his nomination papers before the returning officer in the afternoon. Besides Mufti he was accompanied by senior party leaders from the constituency including Qazi Mohammad Afzal, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, Mohammad Ashraf Mir MLC, Mohammad Shafi Wani MLA, Saifudin Bhat, Ms Asiea Naqash, Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Nisar Ahmad Mandoo, Ab Rouf Bhat, Dr Ali MOhd Wani, Haji Parvez Ahmad, Ab Rahim Kuchai, Mudasir Ahmad Khan, Nazir Ahamd Yatoo and others.

A large number of workers followed the candidate and other leaders and later drove through the city up to Hazratbal, where Karra addressed a gathering.

  • Sri Lanka beat India to win title

Kumar Sangakkara guided Sri Lanka to a six-wicket victory over India to win the World Twenty20 in Mirpur and end a run of four defeats in global finals.
Sangakkara, playing his final Twenty20 international, scored 52 not out as Sri Lanka chased down 131 in 17.5 overs.
Tight Sri Lanka bowling had limited India to 130-4 despite Virat Kohli’s sublime 77 off 58 balls.
Sri Lanka were beaten in the 2007 and 2011 World Cup finals and the 2009 and 2012 World T20 finals.
Sangakkara and veteran team-mate Mahela Jayawardene were involved in all four of those disappointments, and this was a fitting way for both to bow out of international Twenty20 cricket.
Victory was particularly sweet for Sangakkara, who had scored only 19 runs in his previous five innings in the tournament but oversaw a patient run chase that was finished off in style when Thisara Perera clubbed Ravichandran Ashwin for his third six.
World Cup and Champions Trophy winners India were hoping to become the first team to hold all three limited-overs trophies.
But their quest was undermined by a disappointing batting performance that stalled badly after Rohit Sharma drove to short extra cover in the 11th over for 29 to break a second-wicket partnership of 60 with Kohli.
Yuvraj Singh, so often a destructive batsman in the shorter forms of the game, looked horribly out of touch as he scratched around for 11 off 21 balls.
With Kohli starved of the strike, the innings lost all momentum and even Mahendra Dhoni could add only four from seven balls after Yuvraj’s tame lob to long off finally brought the captain to the crease in the penultimate over.
The final four overs, in which Kohli faced eight balls, yielded just 19 runs before the tournament’s leading run-scorer was run out trying to force a second from the final delivery of the innings.
India took wickets with enough regularity to keep the match alive and evoke memories of the 2012 final, when Sri Lanka were bowled out for 101 in pursuit of the West Indies’ modest 137-6.
Kusal Perera was out in the second over as he sliced Mohit Sharma to mid-off and Tillakaratne Dilshan holed out to Kohli at deep square leg for 18.
Jayawardene swiped Suresh Raina to midwicket to depart for 24 and, when Lahiru Thirimanne nicked Amit Mishra to wicketkeeper Dhoni, Sri Lanka were wobbling on 78-4.
But Perera announced his intent by hitting Mishra over long-on for a huge six and followed up with another maximum in the leg-spinner’s next over.
Sangakkara thrashed consecutive fours off Ashwin to reach his half-century and take Sri Lanka to within four runs of the title.
And Perera danced down the track to apply the perfect finish and spark jubilant scenes among the Sri Lanka players and fans.

  • What Kashmiri kids learn at school

‘Ali is a barber but Ankit is a doctor’
Saif Ahmad is the first standard student at a private school in south Kashmir. His father Ghulam Ahmad Sofi runs a tea stall in Pulwama, which earns him a near-sufficient income to feed his family. Mr Sofi wanted to become a doctor but financial problems afflicting his family forced him to drop out of school at a young age soon after he wrote his senior secondary exam papers. But he hasn’t let this lack of fortune touch his son Saif, 6, and ensures that his son gets best available education. Often in the evenings when Saif has returned from school, Mr Sofi sits by his side to guide him in doing school assignments.
Some days ago when Mr Sofi was routinely quizzing his son on what he had learnt in school, the answer of Saif left him puzzled: “Papa, is God my father?” Saif asked.
Mr Sofi was perplexed and he asked Saif who had taught him so.
“Imtiyaz sir taught us a new rhyme today. Here, look at this,” Saif replied innocently, handing over the book to his father which contained the rhyme ‘O God, O God, You are my father; I am your Little Child.”
The book published by Delhi-based Impressive Publishers is part of English textbook series “Classmate” for lower primary classes which are being taught at various private schools in Kashmir. Mr Sofi thought the parental characterization of God in the textbook was offensive. Next day, he went to the school and raised his concern with the management who told him that the books can be changed from next session only.
“If teachers and parents don’t guide students, they will be misguided by books. Even if the content is offensive, the books are designed in such a way that it looks appealing. If the books teach that God is Father, the child will end up losing his religious and cultural moorings. How can God be Father? It is against the basic tenants of our religion. I looked on the face of my child. He was waiting for my answer, but I didn’t know what to tell him,” he said.
Saif studies at Career Care Institute of Education and Training which is located inside a single-storied complex in Newa village of Pulwama. The office of the school is housed on the first floor of a large, double-storied building, adjacent to which is SKM College of Education and Training which offers 10+2 and B.Ed courses. Both the institutes are owned by Ghulam Hassan Talib, a KAS officer who retired as transport commissioner from J&K government. Mr Talib says he has no role in selecting which books are taught to the primary class students.
“We teach books recommended by Board of School Education to students of higher classes. However, for primary class students, there is a panel headed by the school principal which decides which book should be taught,” he said. Asked whether he had gone through the content of the books, he said: “I am a busy man. I don’t have time to do that.”
But the problem is of a bigger scale and it is not limited to one child or one school. I visited almost a dozen schools in south Kashmir to investigate this story. In another textbook series ‘Evershine English Reader’ by Delhi-based Evershine Publishers, the socio-cultural deviations in the books which are taught to the puerile minds of young children are starker and even obscene. In the ‘Evershine’ series, a majority of the characters used in the illustrations have names like Vishu Sharma, Avinash Gupta, Kavita, Tinki and Shweta, despite the fact that the children can’t identify with these names. The principles of classroom-teaching learnt by a qualified teacher in a B.Ed course obligate him to lead students from simple to complex, known to unknown, near to far and concrete to abstract.
But these principles are brazenly violated in the sample of books lifted from almost a dozen schools in south Kashmir. The characterization of Muslims in these books is distasteful and may come across as offensive for many people. Consider this: a Muslim character is always associated with downtrodden professions in both ‘Evershine’ and ‘Impressive’ series of textbooks. In an English textbook for class 1st students, there is a chapter named ‘Our Helpers’ in which Juned (sic) is a barber, Ali is a mason and Akram is a tailor but Amit is an engineer, Ankita is a doctor and Prashant is a policeman. Then there are chapters on mythical Hindu chronicles ranging from the virtues of Lord Vishnu to the importance of Onam festival while the Muslims festival or Id is mentioned in a passing reference.
Mr Sofi didn’t want his son’s thought process to get infected by adulterated information. “Answering his question was necessary, otherwise it would have created a conflict in his mind. Education helps a child in growing mentally as well as intellectually. But here, his religion, cultural values and social beliefs were being violated to influence his thinking. I went through his other books and found a number of similar flaws. I talked to the school management who took up another series of textbooks but it too has serious issues,” he said.
The office of Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education, the regulatory body of school education, is located near Baramulla-Srinagar highway on the outskirts of Srinagar city. The board is presently headless with Hridesh Kumar, the State’s secretary of school education, acting as its in-charge. Repeated attempts to meet him didn’t fructify and his phone was switched off. The ‘mission’ of the board declared on its website is to ‘achieve excellence in the development and implementation of academic plan for the students studying up to higher secondary level in the state’. The board come under the directorate of school education which passes strictures from time to time in revising and implementing the guidelines for school education.
The office of the director of school education, Mir Tariq, is located at Barbar Shah near the historic SP College in Srinagar. On the first day when I called him on his phone to seek an appointment, he asked me to come over to his office. Once I reached there at around 1 pm, his personal assistant told me that ‘sir’ had left the off

ice to attend an ‘important’ meeting. I tried to reach him on phone but he didn’t answer my calls. From then onwards, I made it sure to give him a phone call at least once or twice every day, but all my calls went unanswered. On the seventh day, I went straight to his office. His personal secretary didn’t let me in initially but asked me to come after 2 pm. I had to wait for two more hours. There was nothing I could do more to speed up the time of appointment than to wait.

At the appointed time, the secretary led me into a finely furnished office overlooking a small manicured garden. Mr Tariq, a clean-shaven, round-faced man with a thick moustache, is slouched into a revolving chair which he swirls from one side to another. His bureaucratic style of speaking is hard to miss. I handed over a couple of flawed textbooks to him. After reading the books, Mr Tariq admitted that the books had ‘serious flaws’ and he insisted on revealing the names of schools where these books are taught. When he was asked whether the board had any internal mechanism to monitor the textbooks taught at various schools, he said such a mechanism didn’t exist. “But I will order an inquiry and if what you are telling me is true and these books are taught to students, we will definitely take action against the schools,” he said.
The matter of formulating syllabi for schools is handled by Subject/Courses Committee of the Board of School Education (BOSE). A senior board official who didn’t wish to be named said that all the private schools are directed to teach textbooks published by National Council for Educational Research and Training, or their ‘localized versions’ to the students.
“There is no specific series of books that is recommended by board for primary class students. Up to class 7th, the private schools are left at their discretion to decide which books should be taught while from class 8th to class 12th, the board has made NCERT books mandatory for all schools recognized by it. All the private schools have been asked to adopt only those books for primary classes which reflect and respect the social and cultural sensibilities of the place,” he said.
However, Authint Mail learnt that in most of the cases, the private schools go out of way and select their own textbooks which may or may not fit into the socio-cultural milieu of Kashmir. With no regulatory body to check the ‘adulteration’ of education, the problem has persisted and remained unnoticed. “To show another community or religion as developed and the other it’s opposite, is a deliberate attempt to malign a particular community. When a child is consistently and regularly taught that people of one religion are associated with a noble profession while others are downtrodden, this is a deliberate propaganda and not education. It is an attempt to dehumanize a particular community, a sort of Blacks-in-America type picture being projected,” PG Rasool, a prominent citizen and a newspaper columnist with daily Kashmir Reader said.
He demanded that the board should monitor what type of books are taught in schools and if someone has done a mischief, he should be identified and punished. “It seems to be an anti-intellectual campaign against the people of Kashmir. When the State wasted no time in curbing anti-State projections in textbooks, how can they allow anti-people campaign?” he asked.
Mr Rasool was referring to an Urdu textbook “Baharistanae Urdu” prescribed in 2011 by the State’s education department in which the picture of a uniformed man with a stick in his hand was used to depict a ‘Zalim’ (tyrant). The department of school education banned the book and withdrew all its copies from the market following objections by the security agencies, and the BOSE chairman was booked for sedition.
However, the distasteful characterization of a particular community has remained unnoticed with subject experts and academicians describing it as ‘manipulation’ and ‘indoctrination’ of children at a young age. Noted academician Dr AG Madhosh said the government must be held accountable for what is being taught in schools.  “In absence of any guidelines, such a distasteful characterization will seep into the vulnerable minds of children and affect their thought process. The government must investigate the matter,” he said.
A source in the BOSE said there are no specific guidelines from the government to private schools as to which books or syllabi should be taught. “BOSE prepare syllabi for classes up to 12th and prescribes texts for all the schools of the state registered with the department of school education. It has been made mandatory for the private schools to adopt these books in their curriculum only after which a certificate of registration is issued to them,” he said.
A top official in education department said the BOSE even sends inspection teams headed by concerned chief education officer of a district to private schools from time to time to check whether they follow the prescribed texts and, in case of any violation, ensure that only BOSE-certified NCERT books are taught to students.
“Unfortunately the teams are often deceived or even bribed by private schools on the day of inspection. In many cases, the BOSE officials alert the target school a day prior to inspection so as to give them time to be prepared to face the inspection team. Once the team leaves, they revert to their own books,” the official said. I tried to get the reaction of J&K’s deputy CM and school education minister Tara Chand but he didn’t answer repeated phone calls on his mobile.
At his single-storied Wahigub home in south Kashmir, Mr Sofi says the parents need to be careful in ensuring that their children are not exposed to mischievous ideas which can affect their thought process, “Today’s children face a bombardment of information from all sides. Parents and teachers have a role to guide the children in picking up only relevant information which will add meaning to their intellectual growth, not that which uproots them from their socio-cultural moorings and value systems,” he says.

  • JKLF’s Poll Boycott Campaign in Foiled by Police

Yasin Malik and several others assaulted and arrested in an injured condition while going towards Baramullah. Dozens injured in police, SOG, RR action at Pattan. People stag protests at Baramullah against these arrests
By today’s assault on Yasin sahib and his arrest India and its Kashmiri puppets have conceded a defeat even before the contest: JKLF
Srinagar: Chairman Jammu Kashmir liberation Front (JKLF) Mohammad Yasin Malik was today arrested along with several others in an injured condition when they were going towards Baramullah to attend a public Jalsa. Yasin sahib and others were intercepted by Police, SOG,RR and CRPF near Palhalan Pattan as these forces  attacked the caravan of JKLF with canes, butts and sticks injuring more than a dozen person including Yasin Malik. On the occasion Yasin sahib was arrested along with Mushtaq Ajmal, Shameem Hussein, Shahid Makaya, Mohammad Irfan Khan, Mohammad Habibullah, Yasir Maqbool the arrested have been shifted to some unknown place. Several JKLF activists and leaders have been injured in police action and many of them have been rished towards the hospital. Along with Yasin sahib among the injured included Imtiyaz Ahmad, Showkat Ahmad Dar, Ashfaq Hussain, Salman Ahmad, Mohammad Irfan Khan, Shahid Makaya, Arshid Ahmad, Owaise Ahmad Khan, Aadil Ahmad, Mohammad Haroon etc. many jouranilts and media person along with some drivers also sustained injuries by police Lathi charge. Police also trashed and damaged many vehicles that were a part of the caravan. Before the arrests Yasin sahib along with others started his journey towards Baramullah early in the morning. Police had laid siege and barricades over the roads leading towards Baramullah.
To avoid arrest, Yasin Malik and others took the route of Soibugh, Sanoor, Wadwan, Magma and Pattan breaking the police cordon and siege at least 15 places before reaching near Palhalan Pattan where this caravan was finally stopped and assaulted.
Condemning the assault on Yasin Malik and his arrest along with several others, JKLF spokesman termed this as a mere frustration of Indian rulers and their Kashmiri stooges. he said that only a few days ago DGP of police had issued a statement in which he to hoodwink international opinion had announced that nobody from resistance camp will be arrested or stopped from performing peaceful political activities but today Yasin sahib and others have been stopped and arrested  but also assaulted with rifles and Lathees.
Spokesman said that these arrests and assaults have once again portrayed the frustration of Indian rulers and their Kashmiri puppets who on one hand claim democracy and on other hand stop people from performing democratic peaceful activities.
Spokesman said that on one hand India and its Kashmiri puppets stop arrest and harass resistance leaders and camp from reaching to the people and on other hand arrange full protocol to the public meetings held by pro India and pro election politicians and even drag people to attend their Jalsas. The irony is that after doing all these undemocratic unilateral acts Indian leaders and their kashmiri puppets claim so called victory on resistance movement and term these elections as a vote and mandate for India. Spokesman said that this is most ridiculous and highly condemnable act and India and its Kashmiri puppets must know that their efforts to hoodwink public and international opinion will never succeed.
Spokesman said that by today’s assault on Yasin sahib and his arrest in fact India and its Kashmiri puppets have conceded a defeat before the contest.
As the news of assault on Yasin sahib and others and their arrest reached Baramullah, people in large numbers came out of their homes to protest against this barbaric act of police and SOG. The people including a number of youth marched from Tawheed Ganj raising slogans in favor of Azadi, Yasin sahib, resistance, martyrs and against elections, oppression and arrests and reached bus adda where they were addressed by JKLF leaders Showkat Ahmad Bakhshi, Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Mir Siraj Ud Din Davood, Prof Javed and Bashir Ahmad Kashmiri etc. leaders while condemning the arrests and assault on Yasin sahib and others urged people to keep away from Indian elections as these were just a tool to oppress people of Kashmir  till the last reports the protest was going on.

  • PDP only party with specific agenda, vision for development: Mehbooba

Gool (Ramban): President Peoples Democratic Party Mehbooba Mufti Saturday said that PDP is the only party contesting elections with specific agenda, vision and roadmap for development, prosperity, economic stability and peace.
“Unlike other parties, PDP has presented before the public its state specific election manifesto elaborating the roadmap and vision, the party has for the state and its people”, Mehbooba said, while addressing a largely attended public meeting here in support of party candidate for Doda-Udhampur parliamentary constituency Arshad Malik.
Elaborating further, she said that the political parties in the state and across country were either having personality specific agenda or their own vested interests unlike PDP, for which reaching to Parliament is another effort to resolve the long pending issues of state and its people.
“Bhartiya Janta Party, which is yet to release its manifesto, has a personality specific agenda with all its focus on Narendera Modi. On the other hand the Congress is also contesting the polls just to stop the BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate”, Mehbooba said adding, “The National Conference on the other hand is contesting elections in Jammu and Kashmir in order to ensure ministerial berth either for Omar Abdullah or his father Dr Farooq Abdullah in New Delhi”.
The PDP president, who is also party candidate for Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency, said that the foundation stone of the party itself was laid on specific agenda of peace, development and prosperity and to end decades old hegemony of a single family which sold out the state resources for its own interest and compromised to stay in power.
“Peoples’ Democratic Party was formulated with the aim of restoring the trust and confidence of people on the political and democratic system in Jammu and Kashmir”, she said adding that with its policies and programmes the party was able to restore that confidence on the democratic institutions, which were strengthened to bring transparency and accountability. “However, over the last more than five years the National Conference-Congress alliance has once again eroded the sanctity of such institutions leading to a chaos and political instability in state”.
“Even when PDP entered into an alliance with Congress it formulated and ensured implementation of the road map in the form of Common Minimum Programme”, she said.
Coming down heavily upon the ruling dispensation, the PDP president said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has not only failed his party and people but himself as well. “The repeated rhetoric by the government over AFSPA, Pathribal fake encounter, Afzal Guru’s hanging and several others similar issues have only exposed the disgrace Omar Abdullah has brought to the post of Chief Ministership in Jammu and Kashmir”, she said adding, “Unable to take a firm stand and decision he has been knocking doors of New Delhi for even the matters, which completely fall under the administrative powers of the state government.
She said that the people of Chenab Valley, comprising Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban district, were worst sufferers at the hands of NC and Congress. She said that first it was NC, which exploited the people and then the Congress compromised with the interest and aspirations of the people of this far off areas.
“Even despite being rich in natural resources the people of these far off areas are still struggling for basic amenities including schools, health care, roads, water and electricity”, she said adding that two prestigious hydel projects were functional in the region but it has only brought disaster for the people.
“Today people here are living in constant threat as it is a general belief that the hydel projects have instead of benefitting people brought miseries for the common masses in view of the increasing land slides, earthquakes, sinking of land and similar other situations”, she said adding, “The government on the other hand is yet to come out of its slumber and ensure preventive measures”.
She urged the people to vote in favour of PDP candidate Arshad Malik to ensure that their problems are discussed and resolved in the highest democratic institution of country.
Addressing the gathering party candidate Arshad Malik, highlighted various issues and problems being confronted by the people of Chenab Valley. He said that people were living in backwardness, poverty and alienation due to the mockery and mis-governance of NC, Congress alliance.
Others who addressed the public meeting included Imtiyaz Shan, Abdul Ahad Wani, Distt President, Shahbaz Mirza, Youth District President, Muhammad Yusuf Magray and Javaid Shan.

  • India beat South Africa, face Sri Lanka in final

Mirpur: South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to bat against India in the semifinal of the World Twenty20 Championship here on Friday.
    Here is the score:
South Africa sored 172 runs in their quota of 20 overs.
Chasing the target, the opening pair of Rahane and Rohit Sharma added 41 runs in less than 4 overs. Rohit Sharma got out in his attempt to add another boundary to his account.  But Rahane and Kohli made sure that Indian innings did not lose any momentum.
Rahane departed after he and Kohli added 38 runs together. Yuvraj Singh joined Kohli in the middle as India still needed 96 runs to win the game.
Although Yuvraj did not succeed batting fluently, he gave Virat a good company as these two put up a 50-run partnership. India lost Yuvraj in the 16th over when India’s score was 133.
Raina walked in to partner Kohli and quickly scored 21 runs off 10 balls with the help of 3 fours and a six. While he got out, India were just 6 runs away from the target.
Kohli hit a four on the first ball in the final over to seal India’s victory in the semi-final and sealed their place in the final.
Earlier, batting first, South Africa lost an early wicket in the first over. Q de Kock was knocked out after making 6 runs off 4 balls courtesy Bhuvneshwar Kumar. South Africa made 17 for 1 in 3overs.
A good partnership by Du Plessis and Amla took South Africa to 43 for 1 in 5 overs.
Ashwin did the trick for India as he ousted Amla in the 6th over. Amla was out after he made 22 runs off 16 balls. South Africa were at 44 for 2 at the end of 6 overs.
South Africa made a modest 66 after losing two wickets at the end of 10 overs, with F du Plessis making 25 runs out of 24 balls and Duminy with 8 off 16 balls.
Duminy and du Plessis attacked Amit Mishra and Suresh Raina as South Africa brought up their hundred in the 13th over. Faf du Plessis also reached his fifty in the same over. Ashwin dismissed du Plessis in the 14th over.
AB de Villiers joined Duminy in the middle following du Plessis’ wicket. But de Villiers too did not last long as he was caught in the deep by Rohit Sharma on Ashwin’s bowling. South Africa were 129/4.
Miller and Duminy added 43 quick runs together crossing the boundary ropes at will in the last 4 overs.
India now face Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday. South Africa, on the other hand go home failing to win the ICC trophy.

  • No difference between Congress, BJP: Hurriyat G

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference headed Syed Ali Shah Geelani Fridaysaid Congress party is communal in the disguise of secularism and is equally ‘anti-Muslim’ like the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
Reacting to the India media reports that claimed former Prime Minister of India, P V Narsimha Rao – who was associated with Congress – along with BJP leader LK Advani and other Sangh leaders were aware about the ‘planned demolition’ of historic Babri Masjid, the Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar told GNS: “From the day one, we were saying that Congress was also involved in Babri Masjid demolition along with other Sanghis.” Akbar said Congress tried to hide the reality but it failed to do so.
“The Congress party is wearing RSS knickers. It is anti-Muslim party like BJP. They are same and have no difference. It is absolutely wrong that Congress is a secular party,” he said.
The Hurriyat spokesman alleged that Muslims in India are being treated as ‘second class citizens’. “Indian Muslims are being treated as second class citizens. Neither Congress nor BJP have done anything good for them. They remember Muslims at the time of election,” he said.
Hitting out at BJP Prime Ministerial candidate, Akbar said: “It would be dangerous for Indian Muslims if Modi becomes Prime Minister as his nomination is part of RSS’s plan. His role has always been anti-Muslim and Gujarat riots are best example.”
He said that it is unfortunate that Indian Muslims have failed in producing their own leadership. “They should have their own leadership which could have safeguarded their interests and identity but unfortunately they failed.” (GNS)

  • Inclement weather forced postponement of flight

Azad keeps tryst with people, addressed masses telephonically
Jammu: With the weather playing spoil spot, Ghulam Nabi Azad, union health minister and senior Congress Candidate for Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency on Friday addressed gatherings telephonically.
According to a statement issued to KNS, due to inclement weather his Chopper could not take off. “Keeping in mind the huge gatherings that has converged at various places in different hilly belts of Doda-Udhampur Parliamentary Constituency to listen to their Congress candidate known for his Developmental Mantra, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad chose to address public meetings telephonically.”
Despite his physical absence in the snow clad and remote hilly belts including Laatti, Gordi, Pancheri of Chennani Assembly Segment and Panara, Satyian and Chowki of Ramnagar Assembly Segment, hundreds of people listened to Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad heartedly and voiced for his victory in the general elections with record margin. Mr Azad in his respective candid speeches greeted the people on the ongoing auspicious Navratras festival and was apologetic for not interacting in person due to whimsical weather, causing inconvenience to Chopper to take off.
In his telephonic conversation, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad called upon the people to beware of the policies being formulated by the divisive forces and urged them to strengthen the hands of secular Congress party, which ensures development and integrity of nation. Mr Azad said, “It is not just me but all of you are Ghulam Nabi Azad. So, if you want developmental works to continue, all of you must caste vote in your own favour by switching on Congress button on April 17th to meet the left out dreams”.
He reminded the people that “when I took over the reign of the state in 2005, I finalized number of new road construction projects to connect the far flung and hilly belts with town areas. And almost 40 to 45 per cent work has already been completed under the leadership of chief minister of Omar Abdullah heading Congress-NC coalition government in the state. He hoped that when next time he would come to meet the people, whom he couldn’t meet today, would come by road and not by Chopper service. He assured them the road projects initiated by him during his tenure as chief minister of the state are on anvil to bring them at par with town populace.
The thoughtful leader reminded the historic decisions of Congress led UPA and state coalition government, facilitating people with health care and education in the absence of road connectivity. “Revolutions never take place in a day, but we are trying utmost best to give sigh of relief to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and other states” said Mr Azad adding, “Creation of new administrative units, opening of hospitals, health centers, presence of AASHA workers, NRHM reveals our commitment and dedication towards the rural populace”.
While lashing out at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mr Azad said, “Their policies to cheat people on the basis of religion will never bring them to Parliament as voter always stays with the surface”. The proclaimed wave of a leader (Modi) cannot let him to veil the remarkable achievements of Congress party, especially the golden era of past ten years, which reach out to grass roots level be it education, health, infrastructures and other progressive steps. Mr Azad said, “When any ones takes a flight, he can witnesses the machineries which have been put in service to connect the people of the rural areas with the urban areas through the road network, the dream was envisioned by Congress and it is Congress gratifying it”. In the past ten years of UPA-I and UPA-II, the people of hilly areas are sighing relief and in the UPA-III they will be in age of comfort.  (KNS)
