Afghanistan script history, beat Bangladesh by 32 runs
Fatullah: Afghanistan notched up their first major win against a Test playing nation as they produced an all-round performance to script an upset 32-run victory over Bangladesh in their Asia Cup match, here Saturday.Chasing 255 for victory, Bangladesh could not recover from a top-order collapse and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals to be bundled out for 222 in 47.5 overs at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium to slump to their second consecutive loss in the five-nation regional tournament.
Barring Mominul Haque (50), Nasir Hossain (41) and Ziaur Rahman (41), none of their batsmen showed enough patience to stay at the crease and grind it out.
Rahman tried to change the course of the game with a few lusty blows towards the end but his efforts could not stop Afghanistan from creating a cricketing history.
Afghanistan`s inexperience at the international level was on full display when their butterfingered fielders dropped as many as four catches and gave away few easy runs.
But the gutsy team from the strife-torn nation held its nerve to pull off a dramatic victory over Bangladesh, kicking off jubilant celebrations in their camp.
This was after rearguard half-centuries from Asghar Stanikzai (90 not out) and Samiullah Shenwari (81) took the visitors to 254 for 6 after being put in to bat.
Afghanistan were once in trouble at 90/5, but Stanikzai and Shenwari got together and added 164 from 138 balls for the sixth-wicket partnership to take Afghanistan past 250.
Bangladesh conceded 107 runs from last 10 overs as the duo of Stanikzai and Shenwari first stressed on building the innings and then unleashed an array of powerful strokes at the death to post a competitive total.Bangladesh started their run chase on a disastrous note, losing openers Shamsur Rahman (0) and Anamul Haque (1) with just one run on the board.
Mominul and Mushfiqur Rahim (23) tried to resurrect the innings with a 68-run stand for the third wicket but both were dismissed in quick succession to leave Bangladesh reeling at 88 for 4 halfway through their innings.
Momimul was castled by Samiullah Shenwari just after the batsman completed his half-century, laced with six fours.
Hossain cashed in on two dropped chances to score a patient 60-ball 41 and also raised a 73-run stand for the fifth wicket with Naeem Islam (35) to provide stabilitity to the floundering innings.
Hossain was first dropped by Asghar Stanikzai off Hamza Hotak at backward point when he was batting on 1 and couple of overs later by Samiullah Shenwari off his own bowling.
The partnership was broken by Mirwais Ashraf when he had Hossain caught by Shenwari at backward point in the 39th over to trigger another familiar Bangladesh collapse.
Bangladesh lost Islam, Abdur Razzak (0) and Arafat Sunny (0) within a span of three deliveries to slump to 165 for 8.
After that, it was just a matter of time before they succumbed to their worst defeat in the limited overs format.
For Afghanistan, Mohammad Nabi was the pick of the bowlers with figures of three for 44, while Shapoor Zadran and Hamid Hassan accounted for two wickets apiece.
Earlier, Afghanistan made a dramatic recovery from a top-order collapse with a late blitzkrieg from Stanikzai and Shenwari to post a fighting total.
The duo, who started cautiously, finished with a flourish as they punished Bangladesh bowlers in the final overs.
Stanikzai was slow to get going initially as he took 81 balls to reach his fourth ODI fifty.
But after reaching the milestone the 26-year-old cut loose as he carted the hosts’ bowlers all around the park. Stanikzai’s knock came off 103 balls and included six fours and three sixes.
Shenwari, on the other hand, maintained a brisk scoring rate throughout. His 69-ball innings included 10 fours and a six.
The Bangladeshi bowlers did not get support from their fielders who dropped two catches in the innings.
Afghanistan openers Mohammad Shahzad (2) and Karim Sadiq (12) departed cheaply. Shahzad was foxed by a slower one from pacer Rubel Hossain and was trapped in front of the wicket, while left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny claimed the scalp of Sadiq who handed a simple return catch to him.
Najibullah Zadran (21) was dismissed soon after as Afghanistan were reduced to 43 for three.
Next batsman Nawroz Mangal, however, showed some purpose as he hit three fours in his 33-ball 22 before being out in the 23rd over. Afghanistan lost another wicket soon after with skipper Nabi dismissed for just seven as the visitors were further reduced to 90 for five before Stanikzai and Shenwari took them to a respectable total.

Japan researchers testing tiny ear computer
Tokyo: A tiny personal computer that is worn on the ear and can be controlled with the blink of an eye or the click of a tongue is being tested in Japan. The 17-gram (0.59-ounce) wireless device has bluetooth capability and is equipped with a GPS, compass, gyro-sensor, battery, barometer, speaker and microphone.Wearable computing is thought by many commentators to be the next big thing in technology, with products such as Google Glass at the forefront. The device, known at the moment as the “Earclip-type Wearable PC” has a microchip and data storage, enabling users to load software, said engineer Kazuhiro Taniguchi of Hiroshima City University.
Its designs are based on traditional “ikebana” flower arrangements.
“We have made this with the basic idea that people will wear it in the same way they wear earrings,” Taniguchi told AFP in a recent interview as he showcased a black prototype.
The system, which developers are hoping to have ready for Christmas 2015, can be connected to an iPod or other gadget and would allow the user to navigate through software programmes using facial expressions, such as a raised eyebrow, a stuck-out tongue, a wiggle of the nose or by clenching teeth.
The device uses infrared sensors that monitor tiny movements inside the ear, which differ depending on how the eyes and mouth move.
Because the user does not have to move either hand, its developers say it can serve as “a third hand” for everyone from caregivers to rock-climbers, motorbike riders to astronauts, as well as people with disabilities.
“Supposing I climb a mountain, look at the sky at night and see a bright star up there, it could tell me what it is,” Taniguchi said.
“As it knows what altitude I’m at, which direction I’m looking and at what angle, it could tell me, ‘The bright star you are seeing now is Sirius’.”
Using a smartphone to connect to the Internet would mean you could be automatically put in touch with people in faraway places who are doing the same thing as you.
“This could connect you with a person who is looking at the same star at a remote place at the same time,” enabling the people to swap impressions, Taniguchi said.
A second version of the device might be pressed into use to help relatives keep an eye on elderly family in greying Japan.
The earpiece, which could also function as a hearing aid, could monitor the wearer’s health, including their pulse and body temperature, while logging how often they eat and sneeze, offering early warning of the onset of illness.
An onboard accelerometer could tell when the user falls and instruct the smartphone to pass information to relatives, or call an ambulance based on GPS data.
Tests are being carried out in Hiroshima, with the aim of commercialising the device from April 2016.

PDP considers youth as main source of success, vehicle of change: Mehbooba
Jammu: Terming youth as the vehicle of change and main source of success, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti Saturday called upon the young population to use their energies, potential in shaping a new political order in Jammu & Kashmir which shall be based on truth and honesty.According to a statement issued to KNS, addressing a one day youth convention of PDP youth wing at the party headquarters, organized by Vice President Rajender Manhas , Mehbooba said historically it has been the youth which were responsible for bringing social and political revolutions in different societies across the world. She said our youth have all the talent, potential to change the entire outlook of the state which shall guarantee a system where every section of the society will feel empowered enough, but they need to be given chance in the system to find their worth. She said, unfortunately, the youth have become the main victim of post independence political victimization and state repression, with the result they couldn’t realize their real talent, and it is the PDP’s vision to involve them in governance system to establish an honest and accountable structure in J&K.Mehbooba said the ruling dispensation has miserably failed to address the genuine grievances of the youth with the result they are feeling disillusioned with the system. She said there was an immediate need to understand the anger, frustration of youth and instead of doing that the NC-led government created a system which is fully loaded against them. Referring to the BOPEE scam, she said the tainted person; Mustaq Peer was given extensions after extension, by the government, besides serious charges of corruption and other malpractices pending against him both at the Kashmir University, where he (Peer) has served earlier and at the BOPEE. She said not only this the government has re-employed more than 400 corrupt bureaucrats with a monthly salary of millions of rupees, and the educated youth is asked to work for 3000 Rs/per, which is quite humiliating and insulting. She said youth need meaningful, respectable job avenues and the PDP, with the help of renowned subject experts, has formulated a comprehensive youth empowerment plan which shall take care of their every need. She said keeping in view the intellect and level of education, the youth of the state deserved much better, but the government has badly failed to do anything concrete for their future advancements. She said the so-called employment policy of the government has failed to yield the desired results with the result the unemployment ratio has considerably increased in the state. “The ‘employment and welfare policy’ is cruel joke with the educated unemployed youth of the state,” she said.Castigating the government for betraying unemployed educated youth, Mehbooba regretted that during the last five years the government has brazenly auctioned government jobs to deprive meritorious and deserving candidates and to adjust only undeserving candidates in lieu of money. “Only noticeable achievement of NC-led government is auctioning government jobs in open market and re-employment of the retired officers”, she saidMehbooba said during PD-led government recruitment process was institutionalized to ensure accountability and transparency. She mentioned that more than 80,000 Rehbar-e-Talim (ReT) teachers were appointed. Similarly more than 40000 Anganwari workers were also appointed but not even a single case of favouritism and nepotism was highlighted during the selection processes. “We institutionalized the recruitment process to ensure that only deserving and meritorious candidate should be recruited”, she said. She said that all promises made by the NC during the last assembly elections remained only on papers. “Instead of fulfilling the commitments made to the people during 2008 assembly elections, this government has been deceiving the people by making false statements”, she said.Speaking on the occasion Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra, in charge of the party’s youth wing said that youth have been the main target of the present regime and time has now come to change the present system which can ensure a level playing field for all particularly the youth. He said during last five years, the government has been on a mission to demoralize the human resource by way of suppression and corruption in the system with the result the youth have been pushed to the wall and were not able to seek better lives for themselves.Waheed said PDP is the only party in the state, having a complete youth policy which, besides other things, calls for end to the systematic exploitation of young population and guarantees respectable opportunities for them where they can realise their creative potential and play their role in making the structure accountable, transparent and people friendly. He said youth have an important role to change the political, governance narrative and this year gives them an opportunity to rewrite a new history for the state, where they can live without anyone suspecting them.Calling for a decisive mandate for PDP, he said it is the party’s vision to get respectable settlement of the political problems and bring the state back on rails. Vice President Rajinder Singh Manhas said that the educated youth are the worst victims of wrong policies being propagated Omar Abdullah. Flaying the government for the ‘new recruitment policy’ he said the government has put enormous dent on the future of youth by bringing such a rotten and ruthless policy. Gurdeep Singh Pandey, Abhijeet Singh Jasrotia, Varinder Singh Sonu and others also addressed the youth. (KNS) -
US report on Human Rights in Kashmir
Separatists welcome; Mainstream parties pass buck to each otherSrinagar: Reacting to ‘India 2013 Human Rights Report” published by US state department, wherein the human rights abuse and alleged denial to hold protest rallies in Jammu and Kashmir has been mentioned in detail the pro-freedom leadership on Saturday appreciated the findings while as the mainstream parties passed the buck to each other.Asking US and the international community not to confine their role to issuance of statements over Kashmir’s Human Rights abuses, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani maintained that the international community must play its role on the diplomatic front for the Kashmir resolution. “The report is a welcome sign but at the same time we have to accept that India has never taken these reports seriously and it is hell-bent upon inflicting gross human rights abuses.”The senior separatist leader told KNS over phone that the world community raised concerns in the past as well over the increasing human rights volitions but the statements have done no good to the people of the ‘troubled’ land. The Hurriyat chief while castigating the authorities over ‘imposing’ curbs over the movement of the pro-freedom leaders accused that the just leadership here is continuously being pushed to the wall. “My appeal to the world community is that they must act on the diplomatic front for the resolution of Kashmir in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people of the state.”Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while terming the report a ‘welcome’ sign stated that the concerns of the world community towards the sufferings of the people of Kashmir must be appreciated. “The report that was recently released by the US secretary of state vindicates that the world is maintaining a close vigil over the situation of the state and it is hoped that it will take the serious note of the situation here in which the democratic institutions are being undermined and the just voice of people is being crushed with the military might.” Mirwaiz added that it is hoped that the contents of the report shall be looked into with the serious approach and that other international organizations would peruse the matter.Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Mohammad Yasin Malik while appreciating the concerns of US over gross HR abuses told KNS that the report is a welcome step and that United States must not remain a mute spectator over the curbs being imposed on the peaceful protest demonstrations. “It is US that played the vital role for the emergence of non-violent struggle in Kashmir and it must take a serious note of the situation in which peaceful voice of leaders and people here is being crushed every day.”The JKLF chief maintained further that US must pursue the contents of the report so that peaceful democratic struggle of the people for their birth right in Kashmir could sustain. “There is an issue of unmarked graves, we have Bijbehara massacre, we have the incidents of Sopore and Machil and what not but the probes into the issues are only ordered to normalize the situation and later the findings of the probe are thrown in the dust bin.”Malik added that the world community must take the serious note on disappearances in Kashmir and it is the only crises in the world wherein in the wife of the disappeared people cannot say whether they are widows or and similarly it has the disastrous effect on the children in Kashmir.Among the mainstream parties, senior Congress leader and a cabinet minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din told KNS that he has not read the report and hence cannot comment on its content pertaining to the state.National Conference while holding Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSAP) responsible for the Human rights violations in the state, maintained that the law confers powers to the armed forces without accountability. ”Until AFSPA is not revoked- we cannot stop the HR abuses in Kashmir,” said senior NC leader and Parliament member Mehboob Beg. He added that he continuously has been raising voice in the parliament about the AFSPA revocation and that the chief minister Omar Abdullah has been continuously perusing the case while using the democratic forums. “As far as the curbs on the movement of separatist leaders are concerned, it is done on the bases of the maintenance of the law and order in the state.”Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) while reacting to the report stated that it is undeniable that there are Human rights crises in the state and that if others have said it is natural. “It is painful that there is no accountability for the government forces and even the cases like Pathribal have been closed in the interest of the so called national interest,” said PDP chief spokesman Naeem Akhtar, adding that there is no violation of any kind that is not committed in the state.Akhtar maintained that the free space is being denied to the people of the state which is one major reason of alienation and separatism. “We believe that putting curbs on those who carry on a campaigning for independence or its other variants have right to profess what they do in peaceful means. Ideas have to be addressed with better and more creative ideas- that is what our party believes in and is trying to promote.” (KNS) -
