  • Innocent killings underline need for permanent solution: Baig

Expresses grief over killing of Srinagar youth

Srinagar: Expressing grief and anguish over the killing of a Srinagar youth in forces firing Wednesday evening, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senior leader and former deputy chief minister, Muzzafar Hussain Baig has said that dealing with such tragic incidents on case-to-case basis has proved quite inadequate and recurrent innocent deaths underline the urgency of initiating tangible the process for a lasting solution.

While talking to various delegations at Baramula Baig said the Omar Abdullah-led NC-Congress coalition has left deep scars of torment on the body and soul of J&K in its 6 years of draconian rule and unfortunately before being voted out, the present government is trying to put Kashmir again on fire.

“Ironically, while the present Government set out with the terrible death of two innocent ladies – Aasiya and Neelofar – of Shopian in 2009, on its way out in 2014, Omar Abdullah-led Government seems to have not learnt any lessons from its past follies, and is departing on a gory note with the latest spate of innocent killings,” he said and added that while the heartrending bloodbath of 120 innocents during 2010 unrest is still haunting the people, the present Government is setting the stage for another phase of death and destruction.

Referring to the last year’s killings in Gool and Markundal and this year in Naidkhai , Baig said the Omar Abdullah’s government can’t wash its hands of the heinous crimes and war it let loose upon the people in Kashmir.  He said four innocent youth were killed by the government forces in Shopian at a time when chief minister and his elite company was busy enjoying western music on the lawns of Shalimar Garden.

He said the NC always thrived in insecurity and at this crucial juncture when the NC feels its very existence as a political party is threatened it tries to create instability in Kashmir.

“After having lost its credibility among the people and without any solid performance report card in its hands, the NC is now looking for cheap ways to create instability in Kashmir,” he added.

Baig said the ruling government has also proved disastrous for the people of the state as during the last five and half years and the alienation of people have been increasing with every passing day and credibility of the government has reached its lowest ebb. He said has been exposed due to its misdeeds, misgovernance and maladministration and there is now huge yearning for an honest, accountable and transparent governance system in the state.

  • Kashmir is and will always remain an important part of India: Congress

New Delhi: Commenting on Pakistan Army Chief Gen. Raheel Sharif description of Kashmir as the ‘jugular vein’ of Pakistan, the Congress Party on Thursday said Kashmir is and will always remain an important part of India, and added that the solution to Kashmir problem will be decided according to the Indian Constitution.

“Kashmir was, is and will always remain an important part of India. Yesterday, it was the Interior Minister of Pakistan, and today, it is their army chief. They should know that the entire world knows that Pakistan supports terrorism. They are operating terror camps in and outside Kashmir,” said Congress spokesmen Randeep Surjewala.

“It would be better for the Pakistan army chief to look into his own country’s internal affairs, rather than advising India about Kashmir. The solution for Kashmir will be resolved as per the Indian Constitution,” he added.

Earlier today, the Pakistan army chief had called Kashmir a ‘jugular vein’ of Pakistan, and said that the solution to Kashmir problem will be resolved according to the wishes of Kashmiri people.

He also said that solution to Kashmir problem will be in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.

His statement comes a day after Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan, criticized BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, over his statement on Dawood Ibrahim, and warned that the latter could become a major threat to regional peace and cooperation. (ANI)

  • Book forces involved in Nawakadal killing under 302: IFJHR

Srinagar: Taking strong cognizance of the use of lethal weapons by government forces while dealing with law and order situation, the International Forum for Justice and Human Rights -JK (IFJHR-JK) vetoes for use of such weapons and demands that culprits involved in Wednesday’s killing of Nawakadal be brought to book. The forum has also called for probe by State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) into the incident.

“We demand that forces involved in killing of a youth Bashir Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Hassan Bhat resident of Gratbal Nawakadal in Old City’s Nawakadal be booked under section 302,RPC as the firing was totally unprovoked,” chairman IFJHR-JK Muhammad Ahsan Untoo said on Thursday.

He said there is no justification of using lethal weapons in self defence as forces claim but the protesters can be dealt in a manner that may not tend to claim their lives or render them disabled. “The forces can use such weapons only if the opposite party too is in possession of some life-taking tool or vice-versa,” he said.

Untoo also questioned the intention of government forces that they did it all under “self defence” and said majority of the injured persons are targetted above abdomen. “What can be the better excuse for them (forces) to issue such silly statements while the innocent people continue to lose their lives. Stones cannot be countered by bullets in any way,” he said.

Rubuffing the magesterial inquiry ordered by government in the Nawakadal killing, the HR forum chairman said such probes are meant only to pacify the public fury and to add to the list of already unprobed cases. “Till date, there have been around 783 magesterial inquiries ordered by the government since past two decades but to no avail. Such kind of  probes only boost the spirit of forces and they should be held accountable for their acts,” Untoo vowed, adding the incident should be probed independently by SHRC.

  • Bashir left without seeing his sister in bridal attire next month

    Tasavur Mushtaq

SRINAGAR: It is dark, but scary in Nawa Kadal area of old city. Pall of gloom has descended around as a young man Bashir Ahmad Bhat just fell to bullets on the day of ballot. Wails, tears, slogans, smoke and shelling marked his funeral.

Bashir, son of Ghulam Muhammad, according to reports, was in early twenties. Resident of Gratbal Nawakadal, Bashir after changing few professions was now into needle work. He is survived by parents, two sisters and a brother.

With death of Bashir, hopes of his family are dashed. Bashir left without seeing his sister in bridal attire next month. And her would-be-bride sister is shell shocked, as her neighbours say, “the blood spilled over her mehandi.”

What happened on a relatively peaceful day? Locals say, as the youth engaged police and CRPF in stone pelting after culmination of polling in Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, “enraged CRPF men fired indiscriminately” which left Bashir dead and other five others injured.

The bullet hit Bashir while ballot was being taken to ‘safer place’. Locals say that “Bashir was not a stone pelter and neither tried to snatch rifle.” He was, they say just standing on the roadside and had “nothing to do what was going around.”

Official sources told a local news gathering agency that paramilitary CRPF opened fire on a group of protesters at Nawakadal following injury to one of its personnel in stone pelting. They identified the man as Sandeep Kumar.

Police in its bulletin said, “In the evening after the polling was over a party of security forces came under severe attack by some miscreants in Nawakadal area in the jurisdiction of police station Safakadal, Srinagar. The miscreants snatched the weapon of a security force personnel. In the ensuing scuffle two persons identified as Bashir Ahmed Bhat son of Ghulam Hassan Bhat resident of Gratbal Nawakadal and Nazir Ahmed Kaloo resident of Nawakadal got injured. Bashir Ahmed later on succumbed to his injuries. While Nazir Ahmed Kaloo has got injured in arm and is out of danger.”

What locals said and police claimed, CRPF did not buy the arguments and vehemently rejected the allegations.

Public Relations Officer CRPF Kishore Prasad is quoted to have said, “Our men didn’t open fire. There were other forces as well.”

On being asked a CRPF man namely Sandip Kumar was injured in NawaKadal, Prasad said: “He was not injured at NawaKadal but was injured at Soura. He has been hit by stone in his eye and sustained grave injuries,” adding that he is part of 117 Battalion. He said that the 73 and 161 Battalions of CRPF were deployed in Nawakadal on Wednesday.

There was condemnation from across the sections. While State’s chief executive Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the loss of life. He also said that “circumstances leading to this tragic loss of life would be thoroughly probed.” His father and NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah claimed that “he stands with the family in this moment of inconsolable sorrow and loss.”

State’s principal opposition PDP president Mehbboba Mufti expressed her “heart felt condolence” to the bereaved family and said “killings with impunity only add to tragedies and it is unfortunate that at the end of a comparatively peaceful day a precious life was lost to disproportionate use of force”

Separatist camp also condemned the killing and called for shutdown on Thursday.

However, the pain and agony did not stop with Bashir’s death. Eye witnesses told that while Bashir was being taken for final journey, men in uniform fired several rounds of tear smoke shells to disperse the “unruly mob”.

With around 26 per cent polling in Srinagar Lok sabha seat, both NC and PDP claimed victory while separatists congratulated people for boycott. No matter who wins, the family in old city will never forget April 30, 2014-the day they lost reason to live and be happy again.

As Bashir was being laid to rest, a light shower made the soil moist. The protests were on. Still come to terms of loss, the family of Bashir is in shock. And official sources said that the day next would have restrictions in place. Bashir along with polling percentage is now another figure in the list.
