  • Mirwaiz shocked over death of girl in explosion near Tosa Maidan

    Demands impartial probe

Srinagar: Expressing his shock and regret over the death of a girl in Lashipora Khag  due to an explosion and injury to 2 other children, Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq stated that the area lies close to the firing range of Indian army in Tosa Maidan, adding, there was all possibility that the little girl became the victim of an unexploded shell as has been happening in the past particularly in an around Tosa Maidan.

According to a statement issued to KNS, Mirwaiz stated that it has been a long sought after demand of hurriyat that all the areas bordering Tosa Maidan should not be only demilitarized and purged of explosive shells, but Army should be told to vacate that area. He further said that the people of the area have protested time and again over the losses of lives due to unexploded shells, but the government has remained unmoved over the issue.

Mirwaiz also condemned the killing of Abid Akbar Wani of Krankshivan Sopore by the unidentified gunmen. He demanded an impartial probe and stated that killers of innocent people can never be forgiven. He expressed his sympathies and  condolences with the bereaved family

Meanwhile hurriyat spokesman has condemned the continuous arrest of senior hurriyat leader Zaffar Akbar Bhat and hundreds of youth under the cover of the so called polls. He said that authorities have started new spree of arrests during which senior hurriyat leader Syed Saleem Geelani has been put under house arrest and scores of activists and workers of hurriyat are being harassed to foil the May 21 Eidgah Chalo programme.

The spokesman stated that such draconian measures would never dent the spirit of hurriyat leaders and activists and they will continue with the hafta Shohda programme as announced earlier.Spokesman reiterated the Eidgah Chalo programme and the 21st May Strike and appealed the people to make it a success. • NC Core Group meets, assess probable reasons behind its debacle

Immobilization, Guru’s execution, 2010 killings, disconnect surfaced in meeting

Srinagar: Continuing with its assessment meetings on its worst ever performance in just concluded Lok Sabah elections in Kashmir, the National Conference leadership for the second consecutive day on Monday met at Gupkar here deliberating on probable causes including lack of mobilization apparently responsible for its defeat.

Informed sources revealed to KNS, that the NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah chaired a meeting of party Core Group which was attended by many senior leaders including chief minister Omar Abdullah.

The other party veterans who attended the meeting included Abdul Rahim Rather, Ali Mohammad Sagar, Choudhry Mohammad Ramzan, Mohammad Akbar Lone, Mohammad Shafi Uri, S S Slathia, Ajay Sadhotra, Nasir Aslam Wani and Devinder Rana. Party sources revealed to KNS, that the Core Group discussed pre poll alliance with Congress, cross voting, low voter share in NC constituencies, future strategy and a wide disconnect with the people.

Sources said that the Core Group was unanimous that the execution of Mohammad Afzal Guru the parliament attack convict and over 120 civilian killings in 2010 had a huge impact on public mood that was reflected in a verdict against the NC. Many NC veterans in the Core Group gave vent to their inert feelings about a marriage of inconvenience with the Congress.

“The entire core group shared this opinion that many of the ill planned policies particularly that of execution of Guru affected NC’s influence on ground,” a senior NC leader told KNS pleading anonymity. “The Core Group also discussed worst performance of the party in its own bastions particularly in Central and North Kashmir. The groups stressed on need to reach out to people and know their grievances against NC,” another senior NC leader told KNS wishing not to be named.

The assessment and analysis of the poor performance shown by National Conference will continue on Tuesday in its district upto block level meeting scheduled to be held at Nawah-e-Subh complex.  The Tuesday’s meeting will be attended by provincial, district upto block level party office bearers besides its legislators and the candidates who in vain fought the Lok Sabha elections this year. “Since the block level workers are the backbone of any party and they are the ones to give a factual feedback to the party. The Tuesday’s meeting will continue deliberations on key issues from pre-poll alliance with its coalition partner Congress, cross voting, impact of national issues, Afzal Guru hanging, 2010 killings, local developmental issues and a wide disconnect with the youth,” said a NC minister who attended the core group meeting on Monday. • ‘Adversities always come with opportunities’

Doctor, entrepreneur, social activist, artist, Amit Wanchoo, a man of multiple aptitudes, has been able to bridge and blend these capabilities into a successful career traversing through a difficult terrain. He is the founder and CEO of SPACE Communications, the first Event and Sports Management Company in Jammu and Kashmir. Active in family-run pharmaceutical company, Eaton Laboratories and having the distinction of being a Paul Harris Fellow, Commonwealth fellow and SIP fellow, he as the founder and youngest president of Rotary Club in Kashmir initiated a wide range of social initiatives in sectors like health, tourism, literacy, art and culture.  GK correspondent Mudasir Yaqoob caught up with the change maker

Dr. Amit Wanchoo recently and talked to him. Excerpts

Most memorable moment from your college days?
As the only Kashmiri Pandit boy in the college, I enjoyed being among the friends and teachers at SKIMS JVC. I remember how in final Biochemistry viva, an examiner from outside university was taken to task for asking me an irrelevant question. My HOD Samina madam reacted sharply to his statement. She was so furious with him and didn’t allow him to ask any other question. Finally, we had the viva but the strength that she gave me is till date with me. So, the kind of love and support my friends and teachers have showered on me in school and college has made my emotional bonding with my motherland very strong.

How did the transition from medicine to business happen?
I was posted in radiation oncology where we treat cancer patients. One night, a young patient with complicacies came to hospital who needed proper care. Since no bed was available, the only way out was private room.  I intervened and asked the officials to open the door of special room and allow patient to go inside till we stabilized him but they refused. Meanwhile, an influential patient suffering from minor health problem came and was allotted that room. It shook my conscious. I fought for the poor patient and succeeded in getting him that room till we stabilized him and saved his life. Next morning I resigned from the job as I knew I could not deliver in government sector and started my own enterprise.

Tell us about the journey of SPACE Communications?
I started working at the age of 16 when I was in 10th class. However, SPACE Communications was born in a Pediatric class of SKIMS, which was one of the boring classes and we would do all kinds of masti there. SPACE means Surely Pure And Complete Entertainers. The initial days involved all kinds of events but finally in 2008, I conceived the idea of an Event and Sports Management Company. It was very difficult in the initial phase to make people understand this concept. However, I am thankful to Bilal Bhat (than GM DIC, Srinagar) and Farooq Shah (than Director Tourism Kashmir) for encouraging me and giving me full support to make this venture successful. • Narendra Modi keen to deepen ties with Israel: Benjamin Netanyahu

    New Delhi | Agency: PTI
India’s Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi has expressed his desire to “deepen and develop” ties with Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today.

“On Friday, I spoke with the Prime Minister-elect of India. There too there is a clear expression of the desire to deepen and develop economic ties with the State of Israel,” Netanyahu told his cabinet at its weekly meeting. Netanyahu, who is looking to strengthen economic ties with Asia which is likely to overtake the Jewish state’s close ally United States as the largest export destination, has recently put a lot of emphasis on promoting bilateral trade with India, China, Japan and other Asian countries.

Netanyahu did not lose time in reaching out to Modi – all set to be India’s next prime minister after BJP secured a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls – as part of his goal to benefit from untapped potential in the huge market there. Israel may have a “staunch new ally” in South Asia with India’s election of Modi to the position of Prime Minister, New York-based International Business Times reported yesterday amid speculation here that ascendance of BJP would also bring back the hype around India-Israel ties.

The two countries have been negotiating a Free Trade Agreement for the last several years. While relations between India and Israel have deepened and diversified ever since diplomatic relations were established in 1992, the five years of BJP rule in the past gave a major impetus to the ties.

Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon visited India in 2003 and prominent BJP leaders – L K Advani and Jaswant Singh – had come to Israel to discuss cooperation in wide ranging fields. Israel’s support to India during the Kargil war had helped build a relationship of trust which saw defence cooperation between the two countries registering a significant high.
