    Srinagar, Oct 07 : Unknown gunmen once again struck in Srinagar and killed two government teachers including a female head of the institution in a city school on Thursday.

    Police said that the gunmen fired at the principal of Government Higher Secondary School, Sangam, Eidgah, in Srinagar and her male colleague, leaving them dead on the spot. A police official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the slain were identified as Supinder Kour, who was the principal of the institution and her colleague Depak Chand. “Kour hails from Rengipora, Beerwah, presently living at Aloochibagh area of Srinagar while Deepak is a resident of Jammu,” police said.

    Soon after the incident senior police officers including DGP Dilbagh Singh, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar, IG CRPF Srinagar sector Charu Sinha visited the spot. A teacher, who seemed in shock, told KNO that they were in a separate room when they heard the gunshots. “We didn’t go out because of fear. When locals reached the area only then we went out of the room and found principal madam and our colleague lying flat on ground with blood oozing from their wounds,” he said.

    Talking to reporters, after meeting the shell-shocked staff members of the institution at Sangam, Eidgah, the DGP Singh said that killing of unarmed civilians in Srinagar is a move to damage and attack the age-old traditional communal harmony in Kashmir and police has already got some clues about previous killings and will also probe the fresh incident too. He, however, was quick to add that the killers will be nabbed very soon.

    Talking to reporters outside the Government Boys Higher Secondary School Sangam, Eidgah, Srinagar, the DGP said that killing of innocent civilians reflects “frustration and barbarism.”

    “This is an attempt to defame local Muslims of Kashmir. Killing innocent civilians including teachers is a move to attack and damage the age-old tradition of communal harmony and brotherhood in Kashmir,” the J&K Police chief said, as per news KNO. He said killing innocents is a conspiracy to “target local ethos and values” which will be defeated by the police and people collectively.

    He said that police have got some clues and leads about the killers in previous cases and that the fresh case will be probed too. “I talked to staff members of the school and they are in total shock over losing two colleagues. Police will nab the killers very soon,” he said. Pertinently, today’s incident is the third since October 2 in Srinagar district. Since October 2, seven civilians including a famous chemist Makhan Lal Bindroo, a non-J&K vendor, three local civilians and two teachers including a school principal were killed by the unknown gunmen.

    Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs stated: “We strongly condemn such attacks. We are worried about cross border militancy and are discussing the issue at various platforms.” The statement was issued by MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on recent militant attacks in Jammu & Kashmir—(KNO)

  • Srinagar put on high alert following spurt in civilian killings, security beefed up

    Srinagar, Oct 07: Following several civilian killings in the last three days, Srinagar city has been put on high alert, while security has been beefed up across the city, sources said here on Thursday.

    Sources told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that security has been beefed up and check points have been installed at several locations across the city following civilian killings including that of famous chemist ML Bindroo on Tuesday evening.

    They said that the police and security forces on Thursday carried out frisking at major locations across the city as the city has been put on high alert following sudden spurt in civilian killings.

    Sources also said that VIPs have been also asked to restrict their movement in view of the security situation arising out of the recent killings.

    They said that the security has also been beefed up in view of the visit of Union Home Minister, Amit Shah to Jammu and Kashmir later this month.

    Notably, five civilians have been killed in the last three days of which four have been killed in Srinagar alone including famous chemist ML Bindroo and non-local vendor on Tuesday evening two teachers today morning.

    A civilian was also shot dead in Shahgund area of Hajin in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Tuesday evening.

    Meanwhile, the civilian killings have been condemned by political leaders across the party lines including the Hurriyat leaders. (KNS)

  • Terrorism hasn’t stopped after article 370 abrogation: Rahul Gandhi

    SRINAGAR, OCT 7: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday condemned the incidents of violence in Kashmir and alleged that the central government has completely failed to provide security to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

    “Incidents of violence are increasing in Kashmir. Terrorism has neither stopped due to demonetisation nor after the abrogation of Article 370 – the central government has completely failed to provide security,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.

    “We strongly condemn the attacks on our Kashmiri brothers and sisters and send our condolences to the families of the deceased,” the former Congress president also said.

    Gandhi”s remarks on Kashmir came after two government school teachers, including a woman, were shot dead by militants in Eidgah area of Srinagar.

    The killing of the teachers, which drew widespread condemnation, took the number of civilians shot dead in the last five days in Kashmir valley to seven, including four from among the minorities.

    On Tuesday, the Kashmir Valley witnessed three targeted civilian killings in 90 minutes, which included a prominent Kashmiri Pandit businessman Makhan Lal Bindroo and the owner of the city”s most famous pharmacy, and a ”golgappa” and ”bhelpuri” seller from Bihar.

    Srinagar, Oct 7: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today said that the recent attacks in the valley are part of a well-thought-out conspiracy in the backdrop of increasing tourist influx and planned industrial investment in Kashmir.

    Sinha said, “We had no such specific inputs. This is part of a well-thought-out conspiracy in the backdrop of increasing tourist influx and planned industrial investment in Kashmir.” The union territory has reported five terror attacks in the last three days including two teachers, a street hawker, and a businessman.

    Two government teachers were killed by terrorists in the Eidgah area of Srinagar earlier in the day. Also on Tuesday, three civilians including a street hawker and a businessman were shot dead by terrorists in separate incidents in a single day in the union territory.

    Sinha further said that the union territory is trying hard to manage this situation and take action against these terrorists who killed five people in the last three days, “The targeted terror attacks on innocents are part of an attempt to disturb communal harmony here. All efforts will be made to ensure that (terrorists’) attempts don’t succeed,” Sinha further said.

    Sinha added that he has ordered all the security agencies to take action freely against these terror attacks. “Security agencies have been given a free hand to take the strictest action against such people (terrorists). Those who have committed these crimes will soon be brought to justice,” he said.

    The 46-year-old is highly active on social media and has a global following with millions of followers across social media platforms.

    The Zimbabwean is known throughout the Muslim world and is often seen giving motivational talks throughout the world especially on his YouTube channel.

  • Lunatic fringe curse for Kashmir; Sajad Lone on killing of two teachers in Srinagar

    Srinagar: Peoples Conference President Sajad Gani Lone has condemned the killing of two teachers at Srinagar’s old city, terming such acts of violence as sheer cowardice, inhuman, and barbaric.

    Lone said that those behind such action have no religion and such acts of terror are only plunging Kashmir into a deep, dreadful, and unending cycle of perturbation. Lone said that he himself has been the victim of terror and could understand the excruciating saga the families of the two teachers have been thrown into.

    He added that it is high time for Kashmir to wake up in unison against such mindless acts and stigmatize violence in all its forms and manifestations.

    “Two teachers shot dead. It is important to understand that terrorists have no religion. Muslims have been killed too. I personally had a killing in my family. This is a lunatic fringe which is a curse for Kashmir,” Lone tweeted on his Twitter handle on Thursday.

  • APHC condemns killing of ML Bindroo, two other civilians

    Srinagar, Oct 06: All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed shock and grief and strongly condemned the killing of M L Bindroo, a leading pharmacist of the valley, and two others last evening.

    APHC in a statement strongly condemned the killings and stated that these are acts of pure violence against fellow humans and humanity.

    APHC also extended its condolences and sympathies to the bereaved family of Bindroo and others, who according APHC, have been pushed to perpetual grief at the loss of their dear ones.

    “APHC once again appeals to the world community to intervene in putting an end to the daily violence and tragic loss of life in Kashmir that is taking a serious toll on its people, by pushing for the resolution of the lingering Kashmir conflict, which is the root cause of all this suffering,” the statement reads.
