  • Kashmir Summer Festival 2014 IGP Kashmir flags off Triathlon

    Srinagar: Inspector General of Police, Mr. A.G. Mir in presence of Director Tourism Kashmir, Mr. Talat Aziz today flagged off the Sports Triathlon comprising cycling, mountaineering and swimming from Makai Park, Bouleverd road Srinagar. The event is part of the 9-Day Kashmir Summer Festival.

    The Triathlon was sponsored by the Tourism Department Kashmir and organized by the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) Gulmarag Kashmir. Teams from different schools of the Valley participated in the event.

    Later, the IGP also flagged off the boat race events at SKICC, Srinagar.

    Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mir highlighting the importance of sports events for the physical and mental development of the youth added that such events provide a competitive environment for the youth to showcase their talent. He said more and more sports events should be held covering various events and activities to encourage maximum participation of youth. Later medals and mementos were distributed among the participating teams. Among others Director, IISM, Gulmarg Kashmir, Col. J.S. Dillon, senior officers of the Tourism Department and various school children were present on the occasion.

  • DGP visits Poonch, Rajouri interacts with officers, addresses cops

    Srinagar: In order to assess security, law and order scenario in Poonch and Rajouri, Director General of Police (DGP), Mr. K. Rajendra Kumar today visited twin districts of Jammu province. He interacted with the police officers and addressed the cops in these districts.

    According to a statement issued to KNS, while chairing the meeting of officers, DGP stressed upon them for greater synergy among all stake holders to serve the people in a better way. He said that service of the people is our motto and congenial atmosphere is necessary for providing justice and police service. Saying that security of the people is among the top responsibility of the Jammu and Kashmir Police for which we have to ensure peace and order in the State. All nefarious designs of law breakers needs to be curbed strictly. While dealing with any situation, it should be ensured that common masses are not harassed.

    The DGP emphasized that a continues vigil needs to be maintained, taking the people into confidence, to curb the activities of criminals. Our fight against crime would continue and for this purpose strenuous efforts have been put in place, besides adopting the latest techniques of crime detection and investigation, he said.

    Mr. Rajendra also addressed police darbars in the twin districts and asked the cops to perform selflessly within the ambit of law of land. He said that Jammu and Kashmir police from the date of its establishment has been remained on forefront in providing the professional police service and with the changing global scenario our responsibilities have enhanced. Besides providing security and peace to the people we have to also deal with the social evils which have effected our youth. A mass awareness need to be created about drug abuses and other evils.

    The DGP stressed upon the jawans and officers to prefer public service on their personal comforts. Outpatient attitude in the field especially at Thana level would help to build confidence among the people and strengthen our image in the public. He said that Jammu and Kashmir Police by the dint of its dedication has made the nation proud and we have to keep it up in the future facing any emerging odd situation.

    Complementing the cops for their role in years of turmoil, the DGP said that the conduct of recent Lok Sabha election in a peaceful atmosphere was among our achievements. Upcoming Assembly Election would be a challenge for the force and they have to work with more zeal and commitment in coordination among other agencies to provide congenial atmosphere in the state. He said that Police Headquarters have been implementing various welfare schemes to benefit the police personnel and their families. SPOs are an important component of the organization who have been sharing their responsibilities’ at every front of policing. We are aware of their hardship and enhancement in their remuneration has been raised with the government vigorously, the DGP added.

    During the visit the DGP was accompanied by IGP Jammu Zone, Mr. Rajesh Kumar and DIG Rajouri Poonch Range, Mr. A.K Atri, SP Rajouri Mr. Mubassir Latifi, SP Poonch Mr. Shamsher Hussain. 

  • “Kashmir to be developed as bridge between India-Pakistan”

    J&K should be made as role model for SAARC countries: Mufti

    Rajouri: Observing that decision of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to invite heads of SAARC countries in the oath taking ceremony of his government was a bold step to improve relations with neighbouring countries, patron of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today Jammu and Kashmir should be developed as role model for SAARC countries.

    “Jammu and Kashmir, which is bone of contention between India and Pakistan should be developed as bridge to normalize relations between two countries”, Mufti said, while addressing a public meeting at Rajouri in which PDP patron introduced party candidates announced for Assembly elections for the four seats of Rajouri district. According to a statement issued to KNS, he said that new government at New Delhi will have to address Kashmir issue and to improve relations with Pakistan. He was of the opinion that things have started falling in place for rejuvenation of peace process with Pakistan with resolution of Kashmir as an important component of that. He said J&K would be the biggest beneficiary of the peace process that was started in 2003 but remained on back burner for many years. “It was all due to cooperation and support of then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpyee that peace was restored in this regime”, he said and added that healing touch policy started by the previous PDP led Government in the State was endorsed by the previous NDA Government headed by Mr Atal Behari Vajpyee  Pleading for giving a push to cross LoC relations through trade and travel, Mufti said the beginning made on this crucial front has laid down the ground rules for establishment of an Economic Free Zone across the LoC which would open up immense opportunities of employment. Demanding opening  of more routes on LoC and International Border (IB) Mufti said  “Our vision is that any resident of erstwhile J&K should be able to visit anywhere without the slightest problems. LoC should become line of cooperation and not mere control”, he said. Reiterating resolve of his party to make Kashmir as bridge between two countries to restore lasting peace in this region, he said, “Though the entire population of the sub-continent has suffered due to the prolonged conflict and armed confrontation between the two neighbouring countries the brunt of such enmity has been borne by the hapless people of Jammu and Kashmir. The people living in the borders areas have in particular been the victims of conflicts, having been frequently uprooted from their hearths and homes”. Reminded the gathering that it was during the regime of PDP that peace was restored on the borders, Mufti said, “the ceasefire, announced during PDP regime, has brought much relief to the people living in the border areas besides paving way for pursuing  the dialogue process between the two countries”. “The peace process, despite frequent disruption and its slow pace, had brought hopes in the lives of millions of people in the two countries”, he said and reminded that gathering that the PDP had pioneered the process of peace and reconciliation. Maintaining that peace is imperative for development, Mufti sought support of the people to take the peace and reconciliation process to its logical conclusion. PDP patron said that his party has road map to address problems of all sections of the society. “Addressing issues related to youth of Jammu and Kashmir is biggest challenge”, he said and announced that PDP would formulated a comprehensive and exclusive agenda for youth. Mufti reminded that gathering that it was during the regime of PDP that prestigious Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah (BGSB) University was opened at Rajouri. “It is my desire that this University should emerge as centre of knowledge in this sub-continent”, he said and also promised to make Mugal road as all weather track which will remain open throughout the year for traffic. In the meeting Mufti introduced party candidates namely Choudhary Qamar Din for Rajouri, Choudhary  Zulfikar for Darhal, Surinder Choudhary for Nowshera and A B Shah for Kalakote segments. Yashpal Sharma, MLC, Basharat Bhukari, MLA, Choudhary Zulfikar, MLA, Ch Qamar Din, Surinder Choudhary, A B Shah, Aijaz Mirza, advocate Haq Nawaz, M R Qureshi, Bharat Bhushan Gupta, Ashok Sharma, Anjum Mirza, Tazim Dar, Tahir Lone, Master Prem Nath, Choudhary Zamshid, Majid Shah, Ishan Mirza, G H Atish, Haji Alam Din and others also spoke on the occasion. In the meeting some prominent NC workers namely Haji Abdul Majid, block president NC, Dr Obais, Nazir Shawal and Haji Ahmad Dar joined PDP. Earlier Mufti Mohammad Sayeed along with senior leader of the party residence of late Choudhary Mohammad Aslam, who passed away last week. Mufti expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. He was accompanied by Yash Pal Sharma, Basharat Bukhari, Hamid Manhas, M R Qureshi and other senior leaders.

  • Geelani paid tributes to slain militant of Sopore, condemned Shah’s killing

    ‘Omar’s period worst in J&K’s history’

    Srinagar: While paying glorious tributes to the slain militant who was martyred in Krankshuvan Colony, Sopore gunfight, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Geelani said that due to the rigidity of Indian rulers, the loss of precious human lives is continuously going on in the Kashmir.

    According to a statement issued to KNS, he said that the entire Kashmir has become the mourning place where human lives are sacrificed just for the ‘ego of the Indian rulers’.  The pro-freedom leader said that the youth of our nation are spilling their hot blood for the sacred cause and they are sacrificing their school and college life for the future of their nation. “It is now our responsibility to protect these sacrifices and not indulge in such activities which will harm their sacred cause.”

    While strongly condemned the indiscriminate firing by the forces on the protesters, killing of an innocent youth Arshid Ahmad of Sopore, crackdown on the pro-freedom leadership and imposition of curfew like situation in the Sopore, the Hurriyat chairman termed the government action as the ‘worst kind of state terrorism and lawlessness’.

    Geelani said that it is the shameful act on the part of the state administration that on the one hand they are killing our innocent children and on the other hand we are not allowed to mourn on their dead bodies. “It has now become the routine of the government to kill our loved ones and then restrict us from mourning their deaths. It is the worst kind of human rights violations which the human history has seen so far.”

    While terming the arrest of Hurriyat leaders and imposition of curfew in Sopore as grave human rights violations, Geelani said that dozens of Hurriyat leaders and activists including the Tehreek-i-Hurriyat General Secretary Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar, Personal secretary to chairman Peer Saifullah and Secretary Public Relations Mohammad Altaf sahib have been either detained or put under house arrest. The people are not allowed to mourn the death of their loved ones by imposing the restrictions in the name of so called law and order.

    The pro-freedom leader said that the Omer Abdullah led government has surpassed all the previous records of ‘atrocities and cruelties’ and his period has proven as worst period of the history of Kashmir. The pro-Indian politicians have mortgaged the entire Jammu and Kashmir with the New Delhi merely for their chair. Geelani said that the present attitude of the government is only increasing the political uncertainty and instability of the state.

  • Mirwaiz placed under house arrest

    Condemns use of force against peaceful public protests

    Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Dr. Molvi Mohammad Umar Farooq, who was put under house arrest at the crack of dawn on Tuesday, has sternly condemned the use of force to suppress the peaceful public protests called against the cold blooded murder of Arshad Ahmad Shah  by the government forces in Sopore.

    According to a statement issued to KNS, Mirwaiz stated that unbridled powers vested with the forces are allowing them to murder Kashmiris at will, adding, that these killings would not stop unless all draconian laws including AFSPA are not repealed and the Indian armed forces are not made accountable for their actions as well as the guilty are not severely punished.

    Huriyat (M) Chairman has also expressed his  profound grief over the  demise of senior leader of the movement, and a close associate of the Mirwaiz family, Haji Abdul Gaffar in Rawalpindi Pakistan. Gaffar who originally hailed from Wazpora Mahrajgunj had migrated to Pakistan along with the Majajre-e-Millat Moulvi Yousuf Shah. From Pakistan, Gaffar worked day and night for the freedom struggle of Jammu and Kashmir. He also remained closely associated with Muslim Conference at senior positions. Paying rich tributes to Gaffar, Mirwaiz expressed his solidarity with the bereaved family and prayed for the deceased

    Meanwhile ,Hurriyat spokesman has thanked the people for observing strike against the killing at spore and  strongly condemned the house arrest of Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Moulana Abbas Ansari,  Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam, Mr. Zaffar Akbar Bhat and arrest of senior Hurriyat leader Mukhtar Ahmad Waza at Sher Bagh police station Islamabad.

  • No Strike on Wednesday

    People must not pay heed to rumors: Huriyat (G)

    Srinagar: Nullifying the rumors that the strike call has been extended for one more day, the Huriyat Conference (G) led by Syed Ali Geelani Tuesday stated that there will be no strike on Wednesday and people must not pay heed to the rumors.

    Talking to KNS, chief spokesman Huriyat (G) Ayaz Akbar stated that there will be no strike on Wednesday as the conglomerate has not issued any call of this nature. “No we have not issued any strike call for Wednesday. We ask people not to pay any heed the rumors,” the spokesman stated.

    Kashmir valley observed shutdown on Tuesday after both the factions of Huriyat Conference issued a strike call against the killing of a youth in North Kashmir. According to KNS north Kashmir correspondent, undeclared curfew was clamped in Sopore area a day after a youth namely Arshad Ahmad Shah was killed during firing on Monday when protesters allegedly attacked forces at the site wherein a fierce gun battle was going on in the area. Reports informed that huge deployment of was made in the town with the concertina wires and barricades placed at various points. Reports informed that the roads were blocked as few were allowed to move without being thoroughly being frisked.

  • 3 girls slip into dam, one of them feared dead in Anantnag

    Locals protest, set ablaze government building

    Srinagar: Three girls slipped into a dam constructed by Irrigation and Flood Control Department at Chinigund Anantnag, triggering of protests by locals who alleged set ablaze a government building in the south Kashmir district on Tuesday evening.

    While two of the girls have been evacuated to hospital, efforts were on to trace out another girl, who is feared dead, official sources told GNS.

    They said that incident occurred when the girls, two of the sisters, slipped into the dam while playing this afternoon.

    As such the news about the incident spread in the area, the locals of the village and its adjoining area rushed to the spot, they said.

    In the meantime, they said, police also reached the spot and launched the searches to retrieve the girls.

    Two of the girls, Meenu (15) daughter of Mushtaq Ahmad Rather and Nazima (15) daughter of Mohammad Ishfaq Parray, were recovered and rushed to hospital in critical condition.

    Regarding another girl, Misbah (13), sister of Meenu, they said, she is feared to be dead and efforts were on to retrieve her body.

    Meanwhile, they said, the angry protesters set ablaze a government building nearby and when reports last came in, protesters were going on.

    The locals blame irrigation department of keeping the dam unfenced from one side which according to them resulted in the incident, they added.

  • Salla-udin pays tributes to slain youth, militant

    Condemns police action against Malik

    Srinagar:  Hizb supremo and United Jihad Council chief Syed Salla-udin Tuesday paid tributes to slain militant and a youth killed in Sopore on Monday.

    He has also cautioned that no person shall be allowed to barter the ongoing resistance movement.

    According to the statement issued by Hizb supremo Saleem Hashmi to KNS,  Syed Salla-udin stated that after the killing of the LeT militant Mehmood Bhai by the forces in Sopore, the killing of an unarmed youth reveals that there is no difference between the militants and unarmed men in Kashmir.

    “After facing defeat from the mujahideen, the Indian forces avenge the same by killing the common persons in valley. The authorities in India and their puppets in Kashmir must know that such tactics cannot suppress the ongoing resistance movement in Kashmir,” reads the statement issued here.

    Syed Salla-udin also condemned the police action against the JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik and other front activists- maintaining that the tactics of detention and arrest sprees could not deter the resolve of the people here. He further asserted that no opportunist shall be allowed to damage the ongoing ‘freedom moment’.

    Urges Govt to ensure availability fo ration, water, electricity in Ramadan 

    Srinagar: Mehbooba Mufti, President Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Member Parliament on Tuesday criticized the state government for the latest causality in Sopore saying that it seems Kashmir is being turned into a ‘breeding ground for the violence’.

    According to the KNS correspondent, Mehbooba while addressing reporters at her official residence in Gupkar said that there is a general concern about the violence taking place in Iraq, Afghanistan and its impact in Jammu and Kashmir. “Incident in Tral, or the latest incident in Sopore many families have come forward to put it on record that their educated wards were forced to pick up the gun. It was because of police torture, harassment that they say that their children pick up the gun. Such a situation is being created that it seems that we are pushing Kashmiris towards the path of violence. Inquiries have been ordered in many previous incidents but no action has been taken. Everybody among us should be concerned that it is happening because of the policies of the present dispensation for the last few years. Kashmiris have suffered a lot. I don’t think that such innocent killings are not taking place and inquiries and probes are being ordered.

    “The security forces should have shown restraint. It’s unfortunate that this government ordered several inquiries into such incidents, but till date no action was taken,” said Mehbooba. Problems of basic amenities are faced by people, water electricity, and ration.  The government should ensure availability for ration, water, and electricity at least during the month of Ramadan. “You see protests taking place for want of electricity  in Jammu and in many parts of the Valley. At least government should ensure availability of power supply and drinking water,” she said.

  • Sopore Killing: Valley observes shutdown, curfew in Sopore

    Srinagar: Kashmir valley observed shutdown on Tuesday after both the factions of Huriyat Conference issued a strike call against the killing of a youth in North Kashmir.

    According to the details received by KNS, the shutdown call issued by both the conglomerates evoked mixed response in various areas of valley as the public transport remained off the roads the private vehicles plying normally. In Srinagar’s Lal Chowk area, shops and other business establishments remained closed with the government and private offices witnessed very thin attendance.

    The school children also remained indoors as the educational institutions remained closed with the children playing cricket on the city roads. No restrictions were imposed by the authorities on Tuesday in Srinagar’s old city as the private vehicles were seen plying on the down town area.  Comparatively less number of police personnel deployed on the roads of the city.

    The state authorities told KNS that no untoward incident took place in any area of Kashmir valley on Tuesday and that the day passed off peacefully.     Meanwhile, Huriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani continues to remain under house arrest besides other leaders of his amalgam including Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, Ayaz Akbar, Peer Saif-ulah and Altaf Ahmad Shah.

    Also the reports reaching KNS informed that most of the separatist leaders remained under house arrest including Huriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shahid-ul-Islam, HCJK senior leader Shabir Ahmad Shah besides several others. Meanwhile, according to police, Situation remained peaceful throughout the valley on Tuesday. However in a stray stone pelting incident in Muran Chowk Pulwama an  8th class boy Sarwar Husain Dar son of Ashiq Husain resident of Matrigam was hit by a stone and received injury on his head when he was on way to his school. The boy has suffered depressed skull fracture as per doctor of DH Pulwama. In two other minor incidents some miscreants in Gulshan Chowk Bandipore and Gojwara Srinagar tried to pelt stones on civilian vehicles but were immediately chased away. Curfew remained imposed in Sopore town today.
